Nice touch to rip a hole in the pumpkin. Sure they'd've gotten in there but that little action should speed the process up considerably.

Ann, you asked me recently to see a close-up of our large native worms. I tagged you in a short video I put up today, but I never know if these tags work. Ciao! ~ Sandra

I'm loving this experiment!! I think 10 pounds of food and bedding to 1 lb of castings sounds reasonable, but I wouldn't be surprised if the ratio is larger. Good worms!!!🪱🪱🪱

I like seeing the beginning weight vs the weight after the feeding. Moisture will definitely affect the weight for the feedings plus once the bin sits and drys up some. Wow I don’t think I’ve ever seen an avocado last that long in one of your bins.

Yeah a unripe avocado is a super slow food.

I love how this experiment is really well thought through and structured. It definitely appeals to my inner geek. The only variable that I would have liked to have seen included is the moisture content before and after each feed as well. Obviously some foods are higher in water content like watermelon and pumpkin but if you consider maybe 70% of all food and bedding added is water, 100lbs of food would equate to 30lbs of castings give or take depending on the moisture level of the Castings at time of weighing.
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed Жыл бұрын
There are hidden columns in the spreadsheet for density mass/ volume and water added. This is as close to capturing moisture of food content. Yeah 👍🏼

@@PlantObsessed and I love how although the worms are doing all the work, their numbers, breed or weight is completely irrelevant. It's just mass in vs Castings out. Genius.

Great video, as per usual. I'm looking forward to seeing your results over the year's time. I'll admit I've been AWOL from your channel for a while. It's not you. It's me. 🤣 I've been way to busy with my own to do much watching of late. I always gain something from yours though when I do get to watch. A very happy new year to you. I hope it is the best year of your life (yet).

I'm curious how much the weight of worms will increase over the year. Also, do you ever notice dead worms in a healthy bin? Or do they just get broken down so quickly you'd never notice them?
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed Жыл бұрын
I have seen a sensessed worm once in a healthy bin. Which is a old worm that is big but no clitellum. The dead ones are broken down so fast I don't see them unless they climbed out and became worm jerky.

I sprinkled cinnamon on the bins. Maybe the flies were coming to the end of their invasion anyway, but the cinnamon seemed to make a difference in the gnat fly population

Hi, why is dead leaves brown and tea leaves green?? I am confused, thank you
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed Жыл бұрын
Brown or dead leaves from trees normally have a very low nitrogen content. High Nitrogen is what they mean when we say green. Brown is high carbon and low nitrogen. Fresh alive (green) leaves have high nitrogen. Does that make sense?
@lilithli2690

@PlantObsessed

I have never tried, the wood will take a year to break down. I have seen other people use rodent bedding used. Seemed to work well.

I wonder what "they" are doing to our food. You had avocado's that didn't ripen, another channel (the garden and worm lady) had a watermelon for 2 months that didn't ripen.
