Alocasia also have VERY vigorous root systems. Theyre very prolific and sensitive to not having room to grow out their roots. Mine need to be repotted frequently. Every single time my alocasia start to become root bound, they drop a leaf when a new one starts to emerge because they're trying to accommodate new growth with inadequate root space. Bigger pot = More leaves being able to be sustained basically. Also lighting and soil conditions as you said! Such a great video!

Beautiful! I have a alocasia, however it likes to be watered and then dried out. If I water it too early it tends to drop a lower leaf. So I let it dry out and then water again. Yes I use a water meter.

Thanks for churning out this very detailed care video. I hope you are feeling much better at this point. The tip about lighting from above to avoid droopy leaves was super helpful. I've recently started using grow lights for most of my plants and noticed that all my alocasias are growing new leaves! They are benefiting from the peripheral light from the grow light( which is focused directly at my aloes further away. The maharani is beautiful.

Thats not strictly true, speaking from a career in horticulture and nurseries. Mushrooms in mix can indicate too much organic matter and water staying too long in pots. Out in the ground, that is wonderful, as long as it is not a fungi species which causes root rot in plants, such as Phytophora. But in pots, firstly the soil might be too wet and cloggy, and then if it does dry out while full of myecellium, can become impervious to water, both of which can cause the death of your plants. In pots, repotting with soil draining better is recommended if mushrooms appear in pots. Its not unusual for a small mushroomto apring up out of the bark in a mix. If it is short lived and does not reappear, its not a problem. But if plant well established in pot,best check root ball for lots of myecellium ( fungal threads) and repot if needed. 😊

Hi Nicky, I've just found your video, and it's really informative thank you. Just to add, I've put mine in pon, hydroponic pumice and then you can put it in a wet tray or self watering pot. I wasn't sure how this would work, but it does! You can't use a water meter but the pumice stones hold the water and so it means that as long as there is water in the tray or pot you can leave it. Just remember that when the roots pop out the bottom you have to upsize the pot or the roots will be sitting in water. You also need to add feed to your water in the pot or tray. Thank you once again for the really great video! 😊

In my experience they need soooo much water when they put out a new leaf. I use a moisture meter so - it's not just in my head. I think they sacrifice the oldest one if you don't give them more to drink while putting out the new leaf. Just my thoughts. And haha - I had to pause your video - go grab my "cleaning-kit" and I have been cleaning plants while watching. Thanks for the reminder and the great in depth video!
@Orholam54 жыл бұрын
only small/juvenile Alocasia have issues with dropping leaves often. It has to do with the way alocasia grow (almost no internodal space), with new leaves coming from within the central stem. As the stem diameter increases, the oldest leaves at the edge slowly get separated from the main stem and the plant drops them to recover nutrients
@PlantsPotsWhatNots4 жыл бұрын
That could definitely be it too, although I haven't noticed an issue either way. 🤔 But it's definitely about finding out what works for you. 🥰

A wonderful friend gave me an Alocasia Azlanii. I'm loving it! Foolish people do not have a cheap moisture meter. They save so many plants. The finger test is not accurate. I have most of my alocasias outside, except for the Azlanii. I find that large ones like odora, lutea, tea cups, and stingray, grow sitting in dishes of water, but the velvets and dragon scale types have to dry a little, or else they rot.
@PlantsPotsWhatNots4 жыл бұрын
So jelly! I would love to live somewhere that I could keep more plants outside. I bet they are beautiful!
@Orholam54 жыл бұрын
"Foolish people"....moisture meters only work in dense soil mixes. You are lucky the azlanii is very hardy, most Alocasia would die quickly in a mix that works with a moisture meter. In chunky mixes that people generally use for aroids, they're useless, they'll either show VERY WET or BONE DRY, no in between. Use your fingers, common sense, how heavy the pot is, and water then...

Bahhhaa!! Thank you so much Hun! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Most Alocasia don't like super bright, direct light. You may be able to get away with an hour of direct sun, but I wouldn't suggest leaving it there too long. Their leaves are more prone to burning than some other plants.

The most complete guide. I think my Black Velvet is doing just that acclimitizing or going dormant. It's my first Alocasia ever, only got it because it was sold as a baby plant and it wasn't expensive. I ordered it online so I can't say what the conditions were before that. It did spend about 2 days in the mail. I got it without a pot, so I had to put it in a pot and add some extra soil. I think my first mistake was that I didn't water it right away, I watered it the next day and by then the bottom leaf was drooping. I also moved the plant to another location, from where I had it first as that window I figured the sun will be too strong (had some cloudy days) first. Suddenly I realized all leaves all 4 of them are completely drooping. It's summer here, so the temperature is good 24C even the humidity is good, 60 per cent. It's now on a light spot but no direct sun light. So I'm going to guess it's acclimitizing. It's kind of disappointing though, I've only had it for a few days. I guess I'll have to be patient now, I hope it won't take too long.

@@PlantsPotsWhatNots Thanks. I was only wondering as I've seen some people post on KZbin that when winter comes they take the bulb out of the soil and leave it in a dry place until next spring. In fact I even have a grow light that I normally use in the fall and winter for my other plants.

I knew this from the larger Alocasia, like low rider or macrorrhizos, where you cheat by putting them 3ft away from the window for a year, and then the next year within 1ft, then watch them grow amazing leaves on these big sturdy stalks they've made.. (or, you know, do it in months). Never realized this exact same thing goes for the cute jewels too. So yeah.. Much thanks.. as it was enjoyable too. Will make another post after thisone.. which is a gift. As a thankyou. 😸😸👍👍

Hwy, I'm a new plant mom and just brought a silver Dragon home FRM out local grocery store which I thought was a very lucky surprise. However, it doesn't look of the best Heath. Has lots of leaves, new growth and another comming. Which seems great, but a couple leaves (one big one mainly) has a some yellowing spots and another yellowing. FRM the tip... I'm guessing over watering. Do you think I would still be able to save this ?? Maybe change may soil to a better well draining soil, check roots and maybe wait to do another watering for about a week, possibly with some fertilizer ???? Plz help, I really really want to do well and save this plant and have a healthy happy beautiful silver Dragon. Would be my dream to do this!!! Then I will be confident in my future plant care lol With all that being said I would like to add that nothing is dropping, the big main leaf of concern does seem to be the first main leaf (not sure if that makes a difference).. and all together there are 9 leaves . If that helps

i got a reginula a couple of months ago and it has lost its oldest leaf but seems to be doing fine. i let it get a little too dry a couple of weeks ago and two leaves were a bit droopy. usually drooping from thirst turns into upright again after a drink, but the reg leaves firmed up in their new droopy position. ?? is that a thing? light is above, but those two leaves are looking rather downward...thanks! (feel better!)
@PlantsPotsWhatNots4 жыл бұрын
Hmm.. is the stem drooping it is it just the leaf that is facing downward?
@joannashelton32534 жыл бұрын
the stem is also curved downward...as if it drooped, petiole and leaf, and then firmed up again in the new position...?? they are quite adamant that they like where they are..no limpness...yet...

Can you please tell me what kind of soil you are using? For silver dragon, dragon scale , frydek, ninja. Mine are yellowing. What should I use? Some people use leca, some soil, some bark. What kind d of soil do you use. Also are you using humidifiers on your alocasias?

Azlanii is SO expensive right now….!! It’s on my wish list. I’ve just got a green dragon. It’s fab. I picked up a zebrina today for £5 in the reduced section!

My silver dragon leaves do not have a concave ( rounded appearance), it has more of a convex shape (outside rim rounds up) with some browning/ yellowing at the tips. What am I doing wrong?

How long does it take a pup to mature? How big was your Frydek when you got it?
@PlantsPotsWhatNots4 жыл бұрын
They are usually pretty quick. Maybe a month or two at most to grow 2-3 solid leaves. Mine was about a foot tall when I first got it. She's about 3-3.5 now.

Do you have any tips to help jump start spring growth? I have an Alocasia Zebrina in terracotta that has one small leaf all winter long I recently got a cloche to try and up the humidity and use the Marphyl soil enhancer it’s been 2+ weeks and no change I do use a moisture meter any suggestions would be appreciated 🙂

I would say you're doing everything you should be. Just give it nice bright light and make sure it stays watered and warm. :)

I appreciate this knowledge, my Poly had a baby growing and it die. I cut the leaf it was bad. While watching your video I noticed it was mushy. I pulled it out best I could. When a leaf die do you let it drop naturally? Please help Yo
@PlantsPotsWhatNots3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I'll let them completely die naturally yes, it's better for the plant for sure, as long as you don't mind the look of the dying leaf. It will continue to help feed the plant as long as it's got some green on it. :)
