I use the term holiday cactus to refer to all three different cacti that grow and bloom under similar conditions: the Thanksgiving Cactus, Christmas Cactus, and Easter Cactus. The plant used in this video is in fact a Thanksgiving cactus, although many would be quick to identify it as a Christmas cactus. All three require similar care for optimal growth and blooms.

I've been blessed with my Mother's Christmas cactus that is over 60 years old. Mom worked hard for decades to get it to bloom and as far as I recall, it never did. When she turned 95, we brought her (and the plant) to our home and without knowing anything about it, I stuck it in a room filled with lots of direct light. It bloomed for a couple of years and Mom was thrilled!!! After Mom's passing, we moved out-of-state and the plant only bloomed once. I greatly appreciate all this wonderful information, because I am hopeful, that with the right light and fertilizer, it will bloom again; if for no other reason than just appreciating the memory of Mom's face when she saw it bloom previously! I don't know how long to anticipate this plant with live, but it's got a whole bunch of miles on it already!

That is wonderful! I have gotten a cutting off my husbands Aunt who actually was 98 last year and still going strong. Got it about 25 or so years ago and the dogs eventually knocked it off and so I made starts and still have one that I am hoping to start quite a few. We have a north facing porch with some eastern exposure which they seem to enjoy. I had used a mix of African Violet and cactus potting soil with a bit of smaller rocks from pea size to Concord grape size (1/4”to 1/2” roundish) its now in a north facing window and is blooming now Feb 18, 2022. Third time and I honestly have not been very regular as we were living in a house that we are still finishing. It’s quite wonderful to have this plant as his aunt is a wonderful person and hers is seriously an oldie! She has shared it with many! I will share and I also will keep one I start as I would be heartbroken if I lost it for good.

I have one that is nearly 55 years old and had the same issue. I find that super bright indirect daytime light during the summer months is what makes mine bloom. It now does it five times a year.

I came across your video through the random serendipity of KZbin. After watching the video I read a lot of comments and was intrigued by how many of them described a plant that had been passed down from a mother or grandmother. Some of the plants are over 100 years old. Well, I also have a Christmas Cactus that my mother had in a shady patio for decades before she moved to Northern California to be near me when she was in her 90s. She brought the Christmas Cactus with her and gave it to me to take care of. It has only had a few blooms since and looks very ragged. My mother passed away about 8 years ago … at the age of 104 … but her Christmas Cactus is still alive in spite of having none of the conditions or care that you recommend. I am so glad to have learned from you how to bring it back to the glory it once had.

Mine bloom ever year and here is my secret, I live in zone 7b, they love spending the summers outside. It rains or I water more often and plant in cactus mix not a potting soil.. to make sure they drain well plant in orchid pots. leave them out on cool nights until the temperature starts to drop below 40. Shorter days comes natural, once they're moved inside they start to set buds.

I remember my grandmother’s huge Christmas cacti spilling with gorgeous blooms, and was given 3 beautiful plants this past summer. I loved your presentation, and there were several things I was unaware of. I did feed my cacti in the summer, brought them inside the day before our first freezing cold night, and they live in front of an east facing window. I fed them a small push of a SeaGrow 0-26-26, plus a 4-6-2 fertilizer a few weeks ago. I’ve got 2 blooms forming on one of the 3 plants, and I’m super excited. I’ll put your tips into practice going forward. Thank you, thank you!

I have an heirloom plant from my maternal great-grandmother that has salmon-colored flowers and another from my paternal grandmother that is pale lavender. Both have long, tubular flowers that resemble diving birds, very graceful and delicate. I don’t see this style in garden store nowadays. The first one has to be around 100, the other is probably 75. I rescued a cactus from an elderly woman who couldn’t care for it anymore and its flowers are carmine red and rather short-lived blooms but it will bloom twice a year. Then I have an orange one, and a hot pink one, and a cherry-pink one. Question: regarding the 100 year old plant, it produces more flower buds than it can bring to full flower. Many drop off before reaching maturity. You advise us to reduce watering during bloom time. I am experimenting with watering just a bit every other day or so, thinking that the buds were drying out and unable to make it to maturity. This *seems* to be working, although I did trim branches during the growing season to try to encourage branching, and to give away to friends. this may be a factor in a much heavier and longer lasting bloom time this year. If you have any thoughts, I would love to hear them.

This is the best video I have seen for every step of care of the schlumbergera! You made it very clear and easy to follow and understand. For years I could not get one to bloom. Then I finally found a place that has plenty of indirect light and enough warmth and it started blooming several times, usually Thanksgiving and around Easter. In the winter, I would put it in my shower where it is in the dark most of the time. (It didn't get much water.). When it started budding, I would take it out again. I think I can take even better care of them now that I have better rules! Thank you.

After watching the video about Christmas cactus, I feel extremely delighted and touched by the beauty of this plant. The video has helped me gain new knowledge about how to care for and decorate Christmas cactus during the holiday season. The images and information presented in the video demonstrate the delicacy and diligence in taking care of the Christmas cactus. From watering, pruning, to fertilizing, everything is done with love and meticulous care. I am also impressed with the way the Christmas cactus was decorated in the video. The LED lights and decorative accessories used created a warm and colorful festive atmosphere. The Christmas cactus is not only a decorative plant, but also a creative and impressive work of art. I am very grateful for the opportunity to watch this video and learn new knowledge about Christmas cactus. I hope to apply this knowledge to better care for my own plant and decorate a beautiful Christmas cactus in the upcoming holiday season.

Great video. I have tons of new, baby plants (as well as big ones) in various shades from yellow to dark pink. Why do I have so many??? I have 3 cats and my neighbor has a cat, they are all about the same age, 3 years, and they love to "play" with the blossoms. So, I wake up in the morning and find branches and blossoms scattered around the house. I stick them in water, root them, and put them in small plastic pots and take them to my local food bank where they are a big hit. I have to keep my more precious plants, like the one my sister gave me about 30 years ago, high up to decrease the temptation of these little monsters.

I just came across your video. I lost my gorgeous full Christmas cactus last February due to an unexpected and unseasonable freeze.😞 I missed it enough that this Christmas I went searching for one and bought 6. Nursery messed up somehow with theirs because they lost all their blooms so close to Christmas. They figured no one would buy and they reduced price on all. I gifted 4 to sisters and I kept 2. Color of blooms will be a surprise to us all next year. Thank you for such a great video.

I purchased two at the grocery store a few years ago, they were on sale because the plant manger gave out incorrect advice, so many complaints it was decided that holiday cacti don't grow where we live,it is very dry here and cold during the Winter. Mine are doing fine, their lose our gain.

Hi I loved you video about the Christmas cactus. Very much information thank you. It’s the middle of November here so a bit late for this year. Never mind, there’s always next year, thank you again.
