@plantvibrations I just bought my second jade plant, hopefully I’ll have more luck this time! I’m a huge fan of #captainjacks and noticed it behind you, I was just curious what you use from them! I get most of my plants from an Amish green house (very organic) so they usually come with friends and require quarantine. I’ve found their dead bug brew to be the most effective treatment against mainly spider mites. Is there anything else you would suggest I should try to keep bugs at bay or from captain jacks? It’s a constant battle because I live in the country and so keeping the bugs I can see out of the house is a challenge already. 🥵😇🙃

I have a jade that is a single stem, about 6 inches tall. It has leaves all along the trunk. When do i take them off? I also need to cut it so it will have 2 branches. I've look all over the internet! No one says when to take the leaves off a propagated stem!

I work in residential property management. I'm the guy that inspects the apartments after people move out. Anyway, one of my favorite residents passed away unexpectedly and because he passed in the unit, it was sealed by the coroner's office for a little over a month. My late resident had a jade plant in a rectangular planter on his patio is full sunlight. Mind you, this was in Southern California during the summer. When I finally got to walk the apartment after it was unsealed, I found a jade plant on his patio with its two planter buddies. I took it back to the office and began rehabilitation. Two weeks later, the planter went missing. Nobody knew where it was or what had happened, and I was devastated. The plant was, in a very real way, the last thing that I had left of this resident, as the immediate family removed everything else. I considered this man a good friend, even outside of work, and I really was deeply sad about losing the plant. About six weeks later, I found the planter! It was in a storage locker. It had no sun for six weeks, nor water, and the samn things were still alive! They're now repotted in a slightly larger planter, and they're thriving. I love the jade plant especially, it was pruned very well and the trunk is over two inches in diameter while the plant itself is no taller than one foot. I'm so happy to have inherited it.

My grandmother, who lived in Pasadena California, had a 75 foot hedge of jade! She actually would just pick leaves from some neighbor's plants, and started all her plants that way. The hedge was about three and a half feet tall and just amazing! She must have been living in the perfect zone to have that kind of success growing such an amazing hedge as she did!

😂 I'm doing the same as your grandma...going around the neighborhood and picking cuttings and leaves to start a plant collection in my new home here in CA, which needs some plants to give it some life, decor and give it a homey atmosphere. Sometimes I get impatient waiting for my plants to grow big and multiply so I go around and look for more plants.

@@charissemara Hi! Yes, that sounds like a plan! Another way to get plants is to shop for neglected plants for sale in many stores. Just yesterday I bought a whole bucket of plants at Walmart that were all half price because of employee neglect, though they actually looked pretty good to me. Most big stores do not have people hired who are very savvy in plant care, or just not enough employees to devote the time required. Back when my daughter was working at Publix (she's a teacher for over 25 years now) they rotated her into the plant section. She called me up totally frustrated because all her plants were dying. She said all my plants (about 75) looked beautiful and begged me to come to her work to give her a crash course in plant care. After that all her plants recovered to become healthy and beautiful. It would behoove all stores that sell plants to have a mini course for their employees to watch on their computers that would save them a lot of needless loss. Thanks for replying and happy growing! For a thicker trunk allowing lower branches is actually a technique used in bonsai as the trunk will swell near the branches. You could then prune those branches when you're happy with the thickness. Also if you wanted to take root pruning to the next level carefully raking out all the soil and pruning roots so that they all flow outwards (not down) will help the trunk thicken a lot as they will pull the trunk out in the direction they grow. Aiming for a radial root base is the ultimate goal for bonsai. Great video tho! Jade's are such a cool plant

Thank you for all the information. I have had my Jade plant for a couple of years. It was given to my daughter for a bridal shower and has done well. A couple of months ago I moved it from my kitchen window to the dining room window and Jade was not happy at all. She was there only 2 days after I saw the branches had dropped. I moved her back and she was very happy and standing tall. 😂. A bit of a drama queen 👑

Fun thing to note when moving plants around, and especially from the nursery to your home, you are bound to lose leaves as the plant acclimates to its new environment so that is totally normal. :)

Wonderful video. I am from South Africa and have a flower farm and nursery in the southern eastern coast close to the Eastern Cape border, and we have jade plants growing naturally here. I put mine outside in the Late Spring, Summer and early Fall as I am in a southern state. I usually water mine intervals in the winter. I go once a week and than every few weeks. I have found that keeping track of humidity of the room is a great way for me to water correctly. This jade I have I want to say is about 35 years old now and close to 4 feet.

I have a jade plant that was gifted to me by my aunt, last thanksgiving, & she propagated it from one that was my great-aunts that is 35 years old!! That blew my mind! I didn’t know house plants lasted that long! Hers looks like a tree, it’s beautiful. My aunt is the one who got me into loving plants when I was a child, so any plant she gifts me is special, but this one is extra meaningful.

My grandma gave me a sanseveria aka snake plant when I was 20 years old. I am now 73 and now I and my oldest daughter have a cutting from it and my younger daughter has the original. I root pruned it many times to keep it on the small side since I have moved all over the country. It’s sweet to have something living from an important person in your life who you loved so much.

I too have an inherited plant - a boston fern - that I took off of my grandmother's plant. I did this in my teens -- now I'm almost 65! It's *H U G E!* Wish I could attach a picture. I need to learn how to keep it at it's current size - or reduce it a little bit - bc if it gets any bigger, I'll have to put it in the ground. My jade is over 30 years old and had dropped all its leaves and branches and has sprouted lots of little plants at the base. I thought for sure I'd lost it but it is a miracle plant. It's revived itself!

@@M_SC I think it was on the way out. It had been losing leaves for the past few years all up the stems (it had multiple stems) and I think the leaves sprouted up from the roots, maybe. In an effort to save itself it produced babies. The remaining leaf clusters at the tips just fell off, some of which I pushed back into the soil by the stem. So I have about 20+ babies. Maybe the soil got depleted. Maybe not enough light at times. I did notice some of the leaves were withered. The babies' leaves are even a bit withered. I water about every 10 days or so.

I had a Jade for about 10 years until this year, it was in my front yard, and I never care about it, never water it, but it grown too good by itself. few years back I had trooped the whole plant off but keep the big root stay in the ground, not for long it just regrown again, by the end of last year it was about 1.5 meter tall and not match my garden, so I had to drug it out completely.

I like to tie branches down , hang weights from the branches and use small bam boo sticks/string to shape the plant to try to get it to grow horizontally or stunted . It does work and looks great when excess leaves are removed .I rarely water also

Thank you! I have a jade tree that I've been growing for 30 years now. It spent most of it's life co-habiting with a cactus. Two years ago I realized that it deserved a pot of it's own and I re-potted it. It was 30 inches tall and 30 inches wide at that time. It has grown significantly since getting the pot it deserves, especially the trunk, which really is tree like now. I have it in a very bright room in the east facing window. It is covered in aerial roots and looks shriveled if I don't water it frequently. Your video just gave me the motivation to re-pot again and see how the roots look. If it is root bound I'm going to prune the roots and put it back in the same pot. By the next time, (in a few years) I pot it I would love to acquire a really special cay pot for it. BTW mine has never flowered but out Royal Botanical Gardens have full size (probably six feet) jade trees which flower annually.

I had a beautiful big one for years that was a few feet tall and around. My despicable cats wrecked it down to a nub. I have multiple smaller ones in 4" pots and a few tiny ones from propagation. Cheers!

Great video dude, I myself have several varieties and variegations of jade! A few tips though from my experience though. Jade being a very succulent plant susceptible to root rot, so just like when you are repotting a cactus try not to water the plant for 2 days after repotting to allow root calluses to form. Then gradually start watering again, sparingly at first. Don't let old soil go to waste! Throw it into the composter or bake moistened old soil in the oven for 30 min at 220F to sterilize it (this avoids spreading disease or pests). Then add some worm castings or a slow release fert to revitalize it. If your jade looks droopy or the leaves are flat instead of pointing upwards, gradually expose it to more direct sun. Keeping it in too dim of a spot will stop growth and you play a risky game with leaf drop or rot. Best wishes uwu

This is amazing! We live in the area where they grow wild outside. Our garden is full of them. They grow incredibly easy. They get water when we water the plants or when it rains. Baby plants grow from the slightest leaf or stem that falls in the soil next to the mother plant. I believe it’s called ‘spek boom’ (bacon tree) in Afrikaans because of the fleshy thick stem and leaves. The leaves are much much smaller on the plants standing in the elements. Lovely to hear how you’ve adapted care and maintenance in your area❤️

Jades are such nice but very underrated houseplants...and there are varieties! I think my favorite is one called ‘Shreck Ears’, for obvious reasons. There is also a pretty variegated one I don’t have yet. Also note that when Jades are in long, full sunlight the edges turn reddish. Maybe in the future you could track down as many different ones as you can and do a video on that. Enjoyed this, thanks! 🌱🤗

Oh also forgot ... the loose leaves root so easily left loosely covered in soil....or they can root not even covered! As a child in the public library I was fascinated to see the leaves that had dropped near the stem of an old large plant already had roots sticking out of them. I took a leaf home and my mom helped to grow it into a nice plant. Nice memory! 🌱

If you put it gradually in a more sunny place, it will look even better. The downturned leaves and long spaces between them are the plant's way of trying to get more light in a place that's too dark for it's liking- something quite common that a lot of succulents will do :). It can take quite alot of sun, I even saw people growing it outside as bushes in sunny spots where the climate enables that, they bloom beautifully! Mine will probably never bloom inside but it's still flourishing after I got a strong growlight

Lots of great info on the jade. I have one as well I purchased from a nursery in Lake Charles, LA where I'm from. It's approximately 1' tall and about a year old. I didn't know much about them and did a "bottom water" on it where you submerge the pot it's in about 4 or 5 inches into a much larger water filled tray and let it sit for around an hour. That way, the water wicks up throughout the jade's soil. Man, was that ever a MISTAKE! The plant protested promptly by dropping a few leaves. Luckily I caught it in time to save it. I then read about the care of the jade, which typically does NOT take a lot of water to be happy. Oh well, at least now I know and know now not to make that mistake again! Awesome advice, thank you! The darker green form you are holding here is actually a Crassula argentea, not ovata! The difference is the rounded end , ovata is pointed, argentea is usually green and is the original type where as ovata seems to be more variety than anything. The old jades people have had for a lot of years is argentea. Check it out, I'm no pro just an OLD jade lover!! Thank you again for the excellent channel and I'm subscribing now!!

I always like learning something new about the plants that thrive in and around my house. Within the past week I have picked up a dozen empty pots from a plant store in town and looking at trimming the abundant growth on 6 of my Jade Plants. Now all of these plants came from one mishandled little Jade Plant I found in the discount section of a local grocery store for 99 cents some 3 years ago. A few years later the plant has grown to over 2 feet tall and has a lot of bushy side branches. So this past Summer as I was pruning the plant and repotting it. I took several of the fallen leaves and put them on a layer of moist soil. In about a month of sparingly watering the soil, new roots started to emerge from each of the single leaves. I now have 4 new plants that are doing well. Just mentioning that it can be another way to grown new Jade Plants. Locally I found a plant store where I can take my multiple plant extras and sell them. Today as I stopped by and just by chance, there was a small Coffee Plant there and growing this plant will be a good venture.

@@plantvibrations You are welcome! So when it comes to any succulent, you should learn about its native area where it grows naturally and then do your best to mimic it. Over caring for any plant usually leads to major issues. Today it was time to sort out what to do with a 99 cent discard Geranium Plant, that I bought last year. In about a month I will know what worked and what did not. The choices were, cut up the long stems on a node and put them in water or take a really long stem with roots n it and transplant it to form a new plant with just one tiny leaf on i the stem. The main plant was just repotted with some new soil.

my only gifted plant so far has been the jade when i moved to PA last year! I received it with 2 leaves in a cute little 2 inch teracotta pot....has grown to be one of my most favorite houseplants. I will have to repot it this spring, thank you for this video! I cant wait to see how it grows over time. I honestly was not the biggest fan of the plant at first but after learning and understanding the plant I truly came to adore it! I always heard you should let the cutting dry for a couple of days before you introduce water. They have a tendency to get too wet and you’ll have root rot. If you let the cutting dry for a couple of days, the stem will dry over a bit and then less likely to rot when you do plant it. Also, you can propagate these in water. Which I heard is pretty cool! I haven’t tried it yet.

You are right, unless you are using the heat mat. With the bottom heat the soil will dry out quickly enough and encourage root formatting very fast. Without the heat mat rot can occur easily

Just a quick Yorkshire comment about spent house plant potting mix - sure don't use it on your houseplants but it will go great in one of those felt bags with some extra fertiliser for potatoes! We Yorkshire folk don't like wasting resources and needlessly spending money, so like to get the best out of everything, including taking the individual Jade leaves you took off the main cutting and popping them into potting mix or water to multiply the yield.

Sacramento CA, 6’ tall jade plant grown out doors in the ground started from a single leaf in 2000. Growing in bright shade, never gets direct sunlight, the garden sight is protected on three sides by two story buildings. The plant is covered with blooms every year. The only down side, the soil is heavy clay.

I was given a Jade (ET Fingers) last fall along with a regular Jade plant. I treated them exactly the same but the ET appeared to be over watered. I have been trying to root it since then and you're correct on saying to do this in the Spring!!! It's just starting to get roots after 7 months lol!! Great info!

Great video. I was given a HUGE JADE PLANT a few months ago. It is spectacular!!! The pot is approximately 12" x 12". By moving it to my house a few of the stems were broken. This plant is huge, it took up my entire front passenger seat I let it sit for a few days to acclimate. I removed the branches that were hurt. I've never had a jade plant that was this mature. I figured the branches were just lost. On a whim I put them in a mason jar with water on my kitchen window. (I used to work with plants that were hydroponic grown. So I thought it's better than just pitching them. ) From a couple stems and over the few months those I've added, my kitchen window looks like a forest. My big plant blooms and the starts have groupings of blooms!!! My question is, do I let the starts just continue in water? How in the world would I ever change the soil in the original pot (which is plastic) I fertilize everything with a liquid fertilizer. The root structure on my starts are unbelievable!! After watching your video I'm thinking about trimming them. One thing I love using on these plants is nail clippers for our pets. They're always sharp and easily handled. Thanks so much. Sorry this is so-long.

Amazing story!! Sounds like your props should be transferred asap to soil! Don’t prune those roots. They’ll want all the roots possible when acclimating to soil. The only way to change the soil is to yank it out of the pot and freshen it up!

Thank you for posting this info. Your plant looks amazing! I have several that I stuck in pots after gardeners hacked the huge bush on the side of our building a few years back. I only recently found out what they are now that's is their turn to get some pruning & repotting love. I've just finished the first one following the tips on your video and it looks like an actual house plant instead of a wild vine that drapes over other pots. I had no idea it could look like this! I'm going to do the others this weekend and am saving the cuttings to gift out once they show new growth. I'm going to have to scorw a couple dozen baby pots now. Thanks again, you're awesome!

I moved into a house almost 3 years ago (i had to move the previous inhabitant out as he was senile and had dementia) well he had a jade plant and i never took care of it for that entire time(i was inside a greenhouse mind you). I just started to water it a few weeks ago and picked off a few nodes that had roots and ALL of it came back to life and successfully propagated. Being “drought tolerable” is an understatement. I cant wait to watch these grow.

I actually had to downsize my Jade by like a 50% smaller pot because the plant I was given was definitely put into too big of a pot… hopefully this will help strengthen the 2 main trunks because they’re very droopy and I’m having to use bamboo to keep them upright at the moment. I assume this is because it was in too big of a pot originally.

Wow, thank you. I just purchased several almost dead jade from Lowe’s. I have been trying to revive them. Your video, I believe gave me the answers I needed. I immediately watered as directed. Right now I have them on the porch in partial sunlight because they are “frail”. But after watching your presentation, I believe I will move them inside under a heat map & plant light to keep the environment more controlled. I had to pull off so many leaves when I brought them home, they really are more at a propagation stage. I also did split plants into several smaller plants. I took the better of the removed leaves to try to propagate. But strangest thing, I have literally watched 20 or more videos on succulents & NOT ONE has said to Water or even MOISTURE the propaganda media. All others have said to just lay it on “whatever”, sand, potting mix, succulent mix, the ground. I mean not one time has anyone said anything about moisture. I always thought that was very strange, because these leaves look like they need water to me, just laying on the succulent mix I placed them in. They also instructed to allow the stem or leaf to callous for over for a few days. You did not do that. You went from cutting off plant directly to propagation. This actually makes more sense to me because you have moisture in the leaf of stem to help with the process. I hope I didn’t get the new intel to late. Thank you 😊

If you are using the heat pad there is no need to let them callous over or restrict water. Once your plants have revived I would recommend placing them outside in the warm months, that really kickstarts growth

I bought a big @ss jade plant at an estate sale a few months ago that was so massively root bound you couldn't even see the bottom of the pot! (The roots had grown through the drainage!) I ended up accidentally breaking those off, but I'm glad to know that wasn't a bad thing to do! It's currently in a 6" pot and about a foot tall... Gonna be repotting it within the next couple weeks and hopefully see it get even bigger! Thanks for the tips! Wish me luck!!
