My cactus spends 365 days in a bright room with indirect light and I give it a sip of water once a week - never cover it with a box. It sets buds and blooms without fail every year. When a plant seems happy, I'm adverse to making any changes.

My Thanksgiving cacti have a sweet spot on a window sill and bloom without issues. No need to take them outdoors. However, the Christmas variety I have has not bloomed in about 3 years. This year I got one bloom. I am going to start placing it outside. Great directions in this video! They are clear and detailed! Thank you so much!!! P.S. I am a fellow Pennsylvanian who lives not too far from beautiful West Chester!😊

I have 2 of these plants one I put in a South facing windowsill but noticed the leaves went yellow and wrinkly and dried out looking so I reported, trimmed the roots and put it on an East facing windowsill. I got another one last Christmas and put it in a month facing window amd it seems to really like it there. I wouldn't take kine outdoors as my garden is south facing and is way too hot in summer for these type of plants.

I put my Thanksgiving Cactus outside after your last frost. It is placed in the shade under a tree or a place with dapple sun. Never exposed in full sun. Mother Nature will water the plant through out the Summer. Bring in your plant before the first frost. Cooler temperature will already have set your plant into bloom. My Thanksgiving Cactus is 8 years old. Bought from Walmart now it's two feet wide.

Thank you for the video. I live in the Netherlands, where we use Celsius for temperature, not Fahrenheit. So I converted your advices and tips for all the 'Celsius'-people 😊. When the temperature by night is higher than 7 degrees Celsius (45 Fahrenheit), it is save to put the plant outdoors all day and night. In the Netherlands that will be after the 15th of May. Put your plant indoors when the temperature at night is lower than 7 degrees Celsius. To make flowers, the plant needs a 'dark period' The best room temperature for the 'dark periode' will be 13 - 18 degrees Celsius (55 - 65 Fahrenheit) I never had my plants outside, but next year I will give it a try. This year I will put them in the dark in a room with the right temperature, 6 weeks begore Christmas. Fingers crossed that they will bloom.

Big thing with bud drop on plants in general is not just letting them get too dry but extremes in osmotic pressure in the plant. In that the plant and soil gets just a little too dry and then you do a really big water, the plant sucks up extreme amounts of water and it goes from almost limp to very turgid stiff and the joints that connect the bud to the stem can't handle those pressure changes and fall off. So as you said it's just about being very consistent with watering schedule when any plant is in bud, and if you accidentally let it go a little too dry don't do a big water, do a half water to ease the plant back into a hydrated state, then water a little again a day or so later to get it back on schedule. I've learned this the hard way with orchids haha. Another trick some longtime orchid growers say can work to trick a plant into cold dormancy for flowering is sometimes the dark and reduced watering alone can do it, but also along with that is some ice cubes on the soil at night every second day for two weeks is the formula I've been told.

I live in Tucson, AZ. My Christmas cactus thrived during our mild winter in a greenhouse where the humidity was about 60-70% and temps 50-75. But in the summer, I set it outside in the shade/bright light and kept it moist. It just couldn't handle temps over 110. The shock was so sever, it died. But with your tips, I will try again. I also live in Tucson. I have several Christmas cactus also amaryllis that live outside on wooden stands under a huge mesquite tree. They get watered daily morning and evening during the hot summers. I leave them until I see the temps are at 32 F or lower, then they come inside. Usually the cactus have already started setting buds. They stay in until nighttime temps are at least in the 50s. They bloom every year. Where I fall short is fertilizing. This past year we've gotten better at it. I have part-time caregivers that do the watering as I can't go out anymore and sometimes it's difficult doing things by "remote control". The amaryllis have thrived but I don't force them to bloom during the holidays. They generally bloom during the spring or early summer on their own schedule and are putting out baby bulblets like crazy. If I want holiday flowers I have an excuse to buy a few more to add to my collection. It's a win-win.

It's with the rest of my plants too that get 14 hrs of light due to grow lights a day and it's still blooming. She adored this plant and I feel like it's her giving me the beautiful flowers. ❤

It would get so big that I couldn't walk around in my room! Of course, I complained. When December 1st rolled around, she would move it to the living room. It always sat in front of the big picture window. By Christmas it was so covered in blooms you couldn't see any of the green.

I’m not very big on houseplants, but this and an orchid are tuff enough to live without a lot of fuss. I tend to forget to water and have no schedule. Neither plant likes a lot of water so that’s ok with me😊. I almost did the Xmas cactus in by taking outside. The orchid is much happier away from south window in middle of room. I have difficulty in finding the right size pot for cactus though. It has always been in a dish type planter. I suppose I could cut it to fit a deeper pot. Not sure I want it to be tall. I don’t know anyone who needs one and already have a second from trimmings and will just dispose of the extra. Not a lot of space here and after the drought here and outside gardening I’m about done. We do like these two plants though as they bring that cheer in winter we all need. They both flower when they want and some again later. The cooling down explained why the cactus always starts to bloom on the window side. I always thought maybe light and still could also be a factor.

What do you do to prevent insects from hitching a ride inside when you bring your plant indoors in the fall? I've never taken my Christmas cactus outside but I would like to try next summer.

Scotts Super Bloom, 12/55/6 the ticket. Had a bunch of hybrids from growers in Half Moon Bay Ca. Also put orchid bark in regular potting mix to increase water flow. Small ground cover bark from the Depot works great too and economical too. I live in South Coastal Orange County Ca.

Excellent info! Wasn't sure why my buds were dropping, which is due to the door being opened in my kitchen, and my two plants really don't make buds, and they aren't getting complete darkness at night. Thanks!

My cactus blooms in the spring and Thanksgiving and Christmas. Mine faces west. It does get Sun, about like what you show, and loves its spot. It is inside. Never been in darkness except at night. Domes drop its buds but not always.

I want on vacation and when I came home, my plant bloomed early.. can they bloom again in one season? Or is this just once a year blooming, hmm? Wished I saw this video a few months ago lol but I'm glad I've found you. Thanks for caring and sharing
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations Жыл бұрын
They can definitely rebloom! Place it in a cool room that gets darkness thru the night and likely you’ll get another flush of flowers at the end of winter

Ugh! I repotted all my Tday cacti earlier this summer (finally out of their nursery pots) and now they are all shriveling up and falling apart and loosing all their branches. Boo. I think they were drying out faster than their nursery soil and I didn’t notice it fast enough. Luckily they propagate easy so hopefully I won’t loose too much.
@plantvibrations

Oh no! Well at least you caught it in time to propagate them

Why is best not to fertilize when the Christmas cactus is in full bloom? I use Dr Schultz fertilizer 1/2 solution each time I watered the cactus. The blooms are loaded and they seemed to be ok. I never heard of cactuses to be in a dark room because I did not know about this. However, it did not affect my blooms. I will try your method to see what happens. Thanks for the information. You have been helpful.
@plantvibrations

for many of us, the darkness occurs naturally without any extra needed effort simply due to the longer nights. often fertilizing when in bloom will give the plants a surge of nitrogen that promotes vegetative growth rather than blooms.

Oh dear. I must be a terrible Christmas Cactus mother. My 107 year old grandmother told me to put them outside, under a tree in northern light and ignore them until first frost and bring them in. They are so full of bloom once I bring them in and bloom all through Thanksgiving, Christmas and again at Easter. I keep them in an east window seat. I basically ignore them.

Excellent video about these plants. I have my grandmothers (probably 80 yr old) plant. Live in WA state mts. It was fed with cactus food in the summer. Watering once a week now. Going to quit covering at night, since I've been doing that for a good 6 wks. How about if you follow all this, and I do have buds now, but I also have branches turning yellow. Thanks!
