So, I saw one of your exterior wall stucco jobs 10 years ago. This morning some interior plastering job popped up into my feed. So that video transported me back 45 years at the ripe old age of 12 years old my dad's second shift coworker Joe DiBernardo said what you keep doing. The rudimentary answer was nothing other than delivering newspapers. Have him to my house Saturday morning $15 a day. Joe was a GC but we laid tile, mud, thinset, adhesive..... He also let me out to his friends to do plaster work his brother-in-law to finish floors the plumber to break cast iron boilers in the basement..... For 5 years I rode shotgun in the van, bicycle 12 miles to his house. It was like a second father to me, I cried hearing about when he died, I still get emotional. I had to pay for college upon graduating high school and I needed more than the $30 a day I was earning. I started my own tile business paid for college and went on to a career in engineering and making things. {My specialty is efficiency - making things less costly. That does not mean "cheaper" - which has a value perception component. A touch of History you will realize that not too far in the distant past it was an industrial engineer from Charleston South Carolina (made famous by the cheaper by the dozen) who quantified efficiency in many of our skilled trades. For that the Egyptians and the Romans they all understood it, modern construction techniques are what they are old world construction techniques are what they are end of story. Since my girls were old enough to pick up a brick or a tool they worked by my side around the house. They went to college I bought them a toolbox, filled it with tools. They do things to this day that most people would not attempt. I sent that particular video to my wife, who still after decades of marriage does not understand how to work with me. When you used the word "holidays", it brought a warm glow to my heart. I've explained that word and several others numerous times to her. Another key one was cleanliness of your tools (dad and Joe were lithographers) it took maybe one time for Joe to instill cleanliness means success. Testament to that is my dad's cousins who were plasters just north of New York City, left the small mixing tub back in the late 40s at their house after doing some work. I still have and use that tub. My 1/3 of a yard steel mud tub looks like the day I purchased it 40 years ago. If I left a spec of dirt on tubs & tools I was in trouble with Joe. Obviously you can see that your video made me a bit sentimental, and appreciative for my dad (82nd & 101st) "Volunteering" me to learn a skilled trade on top of Education, Athletics, newspaper route, fishing, play...... Biography of Vince Lombardi titled "When pride still mattered", we just finished a custom home and unfortunately the general contractor who'd been in business for 40 years doing all high-end Construction just didn't understand this concept. I'd love to see you fly over to England, France, Germany and Italy and do a cultural exchange in technique. Those would be absolutely incredible videos just from the diversity of construction over the centuries. If that's not practical you can always go to Mexico or Central and South America as surrogates.

Thank you, Kirk. Your videos have proven extremely valuable to me in repairing an 1890s home with lathe and plaster. My question: I used strucolite as a base coat over lathe for an interior wall, and used the structolite to "mud frame" the wall, ie build it out so the wall is plumb for the baseboards. However, the areas where I applied a thick (3/4") coat of structolite are still dark grey in comparison to the light grey of thinner areas - even after 4 days of drying with fan on and moderate temperatures. Is it OK to proceed with the second coat of mud on top of the thicker, darker areas of structolite? This is my first time working with this material. Thank you in advance and blessings.

Evening Tom roughly 6 to 900 dollars, remember, you have to cover floors and pay your guy plus warranty it for at least 10 years, don't cut yourself short from the beginning. There are years of learning that go into what we do for a living. If it's a problematic location or second-floor work, adjust the cost for this too. What you don't want to do is get into a tough trade and not earn any cash, as this will create a mental issue where you won't enjoy what you do for long. Remember, it's not essential to get every job you bid, I don't, I get 40% of them. Bringing peace, love, and harmony back to the world of plastering. Question. Can i do 3/4 of stucco on cinder block on the same day? Can i do Once a time,or do i have to do a first coat and then the second code or what is the process? Thanks😊
@StuccoPlastering5 жыл бұрын
Good evening coronel, I can apply about 1/2 inch at a time and go to six inches thick with sme cement plasters. as a rule a plasterer should apply a coat roughly 3/8s at a time then double up. Back to your question, On cement block, I usual only apply a skim coat, which is thick enough to cover the joints or grout lines in case it rains. If the stucco is not thick enough with a single skim coat, when it rains, you will see the grout lines, unless painted. Hey Kirk. Getting ready to do stucco before I get the ledger and deck up. Watched your videos and got vycor pro. Man is that stuff sticky. You made it look easy. How do you keep it from sticking to your fingers? Anyway, thanks for your help and keep well.

Howdy James, there is a technique to that. Attach it in the early mornings before the peel and stick have had a chance to heat up. If you're attaching it in the afternoon or in the sun, two people are necessary. Peace, love, and harmony to all Kirk and Jason Giordano’s Plastering tips

@@StuccoPlastering I found a way to apply it much easier. I cut the length i needed, which was 150", 12" vycor pro. I rolled it the other way with the peel off backing on the outside and I put it on the freezer for 15 minutes. I then was able to unroll it pulling the backing off and applying it. Now, I wish my stucco work went as well. Just did a corner of a soffit. Man, you are such a genius at this. When I thought was a little wet and loose, firmed up quicker than I thought. AZ heat makes stucco set quick. Too quick. I have to go back and watch more of your videos and start early before the sun gets high.

Hi Kirk, Thanks for the great videos. I am plastering my new construction house using a single coat of ExKalibur over plasterboard. We are doing most surfaces one bag at a time, but the ceiling of the largest room will take 4 bags. We don't really have the manpower to put out four bags at once, so I'm wondering how it will look if I do two bags, finish them, then start on the last two while the first two are browning out. Will I have any issues with the two applications not bonding to each other and flaking off? Any tips for doing this?

I have used structolite before it's great stuff. Can you tell me if it's similar to Pearlite? Also wanted to thank you taking the time making these great videos!
@StuccoPlastering5 жыл бұрын
Howdy, my friend, they are similar in nature however perlite is used for spray steel beams as it has a higher rate of fireproofing ratios. I spayed Perligt for a few months to the high rises in S.F. early on in my career, FYI, I hated that job. Gypsum Plaster: Perlite plaster aggregate mixed with gypsum provides an ideal base coat plaster for interior walls and ceilings and for membrane fireproofing to the underside of floor and roof assemblies, or structural steel members. Kirk, I live in a 94 year old house. A section 2.5 x 3 feet of plaster fell from the ceiling (lath plaster with animal hair). I've had it repaired but now find every morning heavy condensation on the windows. Never happened before; not happening in any other room. Is there something in the plastering process that would have caused this? They had the windows open during the work. They used metal grid and applied rough then polished plaster to the entire ceiling. What could be causing this condensation? Any thoughts? Thank you.

I do property maintenance on both single family residence and small commercial buildings of a similar age. Just a consideration, if the original cieling issue was cause by say a roof vent leak, a drip likely tracked a joist. The same water may have made it to the top of the window fixture. Vinyl replacement windows may be harder to find evidence as opposed to metal counterweight and single pane glass on wood frame. Hope it a simple fix. :)

Hey Kirk! Love the videos. I just purchased a 130 y.o. home in New Orleans with horsehair plaster walls. I’m guessing this is a sand finish? It’s definitely not smooth. Should I worry about a lime finish product to patch any holes?
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Hi Derwin, Id recommend using structo-lite, when it starts to set you can use a sponge float and bring that sand to the surface.

@@StuccoPlastering thanks! I did 3 layers of structo. I decided I didn’t want it too sandy so didn’t use sponge. The old walls aren’t too bumpy- just not glassy like a veneer.
