One coat veneer lime plastering.
In this video, we answer the question; Can you use a single or one coat of interior finish lime plaster to finish your walls? Yes.
FYI, folks, here are all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.

So can you skip the basecoat? Yes. But there are rules. Allow me to guide you to these simple methods.
Lime Blistering is expected if one does not apply a basecoat first. Read on.
Blistering In lime finishes when one is unsure of the set times and you push your trowel down too hard, especially if the trowel is dry. Keep your trowel wet.
If you’re going to spread a lime finish coat of plaster, skill or experience is necessary.
For example, I just applied a finished coat of lime plaster in this video.
One must understand when It sets, which comes from practicing.
If steel troweled it too soon, the new lime finish could pull away from the bonding agent, causing blistering and spider checking.
If you are not sure, apply a basecoat. It’s difficult for lime to finish plaster from a porous sandy basecoat but easy for a lime finish to separate from A bonding agent; this learning takes practice.
For example, applying no base coat over Cement plaster as in this video or sheetrock while eliminating the Basecoat process and using only a lime finish over sheetrock, blistering can happen unless that person understands interior plastering materials.
When applying a finish coat of lime plaster over a glued surface, spread the veneer finish to the entire wall without over-troweling, then, when ready, smooth out the plaster with water and trowel it down with as few strokes as possible.
Note we don’t use a primer. We use a bonding agent such as Quikete or plaster weld, which is pink. These stucco walls were painted. Thus, it was necessary to apply a bonding agent to the walls. Otherwise, my plaster finishes may separate in ten years or so. All our finishes have to adhere permanently, whether inside or on the exterior.

it must be something about plasterers that makes them extremely proud of the work they have done my father plastered for almost 30 years and misses every day of it says it was the greatest thing ever. I'm going into the union for plastering hoping to open my own business. it is awesome how you cherish your work so much. I thought I wanted to go to school to do some job that other people did until I got into the trades and realized trades finishes are what are around for decades and it's awesome! Howdy Austin, we all have to work, why not find a job that provides a satisfaction one can witness on a daily basis, plus a trade that provide the outlet for good physical health plus earns a good wage, can't beat that. After all we all can't be bankers who sit in chairs making heaps of dough, some of us must work manually, thus reap rewards of good health in the process, not a bad deal. Advise your dad to place an add in some of the free classified papers under skill labor, providing "small stucco repairs," help get him off the chair and get back his life he once loved a wee bit at a time, it really is doable , one step at a time. Cheers and have a happy new year my friend, Kirk giordano’s rendering any and all stucco repairs

Howdy Kirk ! First, I absolutley love your Videos, Your work ethic and craftsmanship ETC, And i certainly admire and respect your skill, I know all to well nothing is as easy as it may look ! Anyway I lost my father a year ago, he was 78 yrs old and a lifelong plasterer, One of the best plasterers in New England, I lean more towards the carpentry end but lately i am taking more and more interest in doing more plastering, I enjoy doing it and in some odd way it relaxes me. Just wanted to say you remind me alot of my father, He was a perfectionist, and a fantastic old school plasterer i should have paid more attention to how he did things but as I said, i went more the carpenter route. And now that I found your videos many of my questions are being answered...I found no one that worked like he did. Keep up the great work , I have learned alot watching and the memories of my dad spinning a hawk and tossing water up on a wall with the old brush method are brought back with every video I see ! Thank you and i learn something with each new video, Your awesome, I so respect the artform of plastering, your the best I have watched ! Thanks, Bill

Evening Billy, sound words of wisdom, Our trade appears to most, boring, too physically hard, dirty or dusty with no chance of advancement, with this mindset most lose interest unless they become good quickly, which is rare. I too have often told my sons, man, look back at what we just did, can you believe they paid us for the workout plus the achievement gives a satisfactory feeling as well. My youngest is started to see the bigger picture at this time of writing. of course if a person chooses a career that gives them pleasure no matter what that service may be, I'm all for it. Kirk, our house in the here middle of England dates back to medieval times. I was looking at some plaster that broke off from an inside wall. It has no sand but has animal hair, except for the finishing coats which do have sand. There are lots of interesting things in this house. The sandless plaster may have had crushed limestone in it instead of sand, and it's very flexible.
@lisawintler-cox1641

Where do you get the lime plaster and hair to replace chunks? I get the feeling it's all a lot easier to get in England because of houses like yours. I was reading a story about cob houses in England(mud and fiber) that also date to medieval times and how they need upkeep every so often. An example they gave was a cob house they rented in England. Evidently a huge chunk fell off the living room wall while they were eating dinner!

Great job as always!! Quick question for you. I had a heated debate with a plasterer a while back. I'm a painter by trade and he was hired to skimcoat an entire house(interior) lime/plaster. At what level of finish to do leave the job for the painter to come in and finish? Should the painter be obligated to do the polish coat? I always touch up and sand minimally because it is to be expected but this was beyond that. Thanks for your input!

Howdy Mate, Excellent question and one I have beat at least 4 times in 25 years on big jobs. The best advice is to meet with the owner show him what you are offering, if he accepts all is groovy, plus it might be a good idea on complet homes or jobs over a certain amount of cash to have a sample provided. I have had recently a frustrating instance where I bid for a level 2 or 3 at tops to match the rest of the interior finish only to be tol they wish a level Five, not much in our trade is this annoying while removing any profits you agreed upon, with the up front agreement. I dont really ever use blueboard, just because its hard to find in stock, and has to be special ordered. If I could get people to hang it for me, great but, most of the time I am plastering over a bonding agent. Have to work with what is available! And just a note, any of the veneer products are much more moisture resistant than plain old taped drywall, and will hold up great in a bathroom, or anywhere really.

KirkYou are a funny dude, and one hell of a plasterer, and teacher/speaker etc. I have a question. Inside my home I have T-111 installed in a room. If I apply a bonding agent, can I spread a one coat diamond finish over it without a base? I have some experience spreading structo-lite. Would It be better to spread Structolite as a base coat, then spread the diamond veneer finish over the structo lite? Thank you Sir,Chris
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 жыл бұрын
Evening Chris, this depends on the level of integrity your trying to achieve. T-11 has vertical grooves and is wood, Gypsums and veneers don't adhere to wood even with a bonding agent at least not for long, I have seen it fail almost every time as when the wood heats it expands thus the gypsum or veneer plasters pops off. I hate to say this but I suggest you sheetrock as it is necessary, then I would apply a thin layer of diamond or imperial base veneer plaster, then finish with thin layer of diamond finish, or you can use taping mud. Hey Kirk and thank you. I have a follow up question.... If I were to mount diamond wire mesh over 1/2" furring strips in the studs over the t111 wall, then plaster with structo-lite/diamond would that be correct/proper? I wouldn't think I need a waterproof barrier on the interior wall, but what do you think? I don't like drywall, and I already have the wire mesh???. Thanks again for taking the time to answer me.

I recently purchased a beautiful 1907 Arts & Crafts home in the Pacific Northwest area on 15 acres...out in the middle of nowhere, or at least, not within 50 miles of a decent contractor let alone a skilled plasterer. Where I come from, plasterers (SoCal), while not exactly plentiful, could still be found and be counted on to do a good job. Here, you're lucky if ANY contractor (the 6 that I've called listed in the local directories) answers their phone or even shows up on their appointment day. I've had 3 no shows and at least a dozen that don't return calls. Anyway, what I wouldn't do to have your skills or have someone of your expertise and knowledge level to come out and work on this place.

Hey kirk! love when you do videos on the veneers ! I thoroughly enjoy spreading these products, and push them all day in place of taping mud. Just to add some information on the product you are using there, that imperial finish contains NO lime at all. Its all gypsum, and the plasters strength comes from gypsum, that's why the imperial finish is as strong as they come. The lime added to the diamond, x-kalibur, and other veneers is to increase the workability, as in make them creamy and easy to spread, this is at the cost of some final strength. Lime never adds strength to the product, only workability. All these veneers have final cured stregnth numbers in PSI just like stucco or concrete, and the imperial is top of the list, kind of like your rapid set or eisenwall cements in the exterior realm. Another interesting fact, the one coat veneers do indeed have some sand added in the FINISH products. Its just a very fine sand, so it is quite hard to detect. This super fine sand acts as an aggregate to give the product the strength to be used in a one coat application. That's what makes these veneers stronger, and able to be used thicker than a traditional white finish coat that would be made only of gypsum and lime. I know when you mix and spread the finishes, its hard to believe that they contain any sand, or aggregate, but right from the manufacturer, the contents of that Imperial veneer finish are: 65% plaster of paris or gypsum plaster, and 35% quartz, which is in the form of extremely fine sand. Like you described, you can go pretty thick with the veneer products, and they dont check crack and fall apart. This is because of the aggregate in them. Go much over 1/8 with a pure lime/gypsum white coat with no sand, and it will fail for sure, but like you described, you can pull off a pretty fat fill with the veneers, and they still work ok. The other veneers, diamond, x-kalibur, unikal, etc all have lime/gypsum/sand in them. As far as I am aware, the imperial is the only pure gypsum/sand veneer finish. I know you want me to start making my own videos rather than bomb your comments, but I do feel compelled to share any additional information I can regarding the interior products, when I can. As its tough for regular folk to get any straight answers regarding these products, without spending a serious amount of time hunting down answers. Its hard enough to find someone to spread the products, let alone know all the technical information about them.

Thanks so much Kirk, that means a lot to me! I really feel lucky to be so excited and interested in what I get paid doing, and enjoy the work at the same time. There aren't many places some one can get together and discuss such a topic, its wonderful that the internet can bring anyone interested together, so what people do know can be in one place for others to dig through and learn themselves. I always get a kick when you say things only someone who spreads would understand. Like how a damn tiny closet can take just as long as a huge room. Or man that dreaded darkening, better hope you don't need to do any troweling after she starts to darken out! Or how dealing with the suction or not can result in a beautiful easy finishing, or a wall that gets out of hand and needs totally re coated. It truly does take years of working with these materials to become proficient enough to not make a big mess, and even then, I still learn every time I pick up a trowel. Nothing is like that feeling of having a full mortar board, and a wide open wall ready to go. I live for that moment in my day.. cant get enough! I wanted to bring up the sand content in the veneer finishes, because I believe it's the secret sauce that makes the veneers so strong in such a thin coat. The one coat veneers especially, but the two coat systems as well are able to pack the strength equivalent of 7/8 to 1 inch of regular plaster, with a lime and gauging finish, into just 1/8 of an inch in a veneer system. The fine sand, so fine in fact, that you think you are spreading a sand less finish like lime and gauging, is the aggregate that makes the veneer finishes so strong. If you read through the descriptions of veneer products, they almost always use the words high strength in their descriptions, so I was always curious how they attained such a strong product, with such a thin coat because they sure dont explain it on the back of the bag! The answer is super fine, almost microscopic quartz sand!

Hey Kirk, when you use your setting type mud (5, 20, 45, etc..) as a finish coat whatdoyou do about it being water soluble? I just patched my ceiling with some of the USG Easy Sand 20 minute and put kind of a sandy swirl texture to it. When it cured I was just messing around with it and I put a dab of water on my finger and rubbed it only to find that it would dissolve with water. The original plaster in the house is hard as nails and pretty much impervious to water. Are all gypsum based plasters water soluble? Or would a veneer plaster not do this? I'm extremely curious as to what type of plaster is in my house as I would like to be using a like product to patch with instead of this 20 minute mud. The house was built in '62. All gypsum board covered in a base coat and then a finish coat, but I don't know if it's Lime, Cement, Gypsum or what??

Evening Chase, chance are your home was skim coated with a veneer plaster similar to what we did in this video. Water does not hurt veneer plasters as they have lime in them among other additives, what happens when Lime is added to water? Howdy Brian, excellent question, if it's over sheetrock, then one should apply a basecoat, this was over and exterior stucco wall that was turned into a porch, obviously no more strength was required, I make it appear easy, but this takes years of practice as to apply just a finish coat as thick as I did one will get blistering and lots of hairline cracking, that takes much retempering with water and troweling. Evening jerry, yes, you can but it preferable to put a finish coat over a base coat as the base coat has sand in it thus, much stronger and durable than two finish coats. Your cinderblock wall with lead-based paint, I would paint a bonding agent on it and stucco over it as veneer plasters should be used for interior uses. Besides you would destroy the harder backer board trying to nail it into cinderblocks and destroy the cinderblock at the same time, dont do that. I just can't understand why some folks (Scott J. Eaton) have to put down some working folks and what tools they used. My boss used to tell me; I don't care how you do it just fix it & get it done. Man, I'm sure glad I'm retired now. There's a lot of jealousy in the trades.

I have been plastering for over ,30 years. It seems that it's not very common in USA. In UK we plasterer full house ceilings walls. Render outside .screed floors. I see now is very unusual over there. So to me it was laughable . As we do massive areas . Now plasterer would ever use a screeding trowel for walls in UK . Watch some UK videos. Then you will see the difference.

Yep, I wet set beads like that often. Easiest way to set and plumb them up a lot of the time. I've seen kirk do that plenty in his videos. With the thin veneer products though, I wouldn't say he needed beads here, the stucco is plenty strong.

I am so inspired by your tutorials, and will be attempting to plaster my bathroom!! It's small, so I figured if I mess up, it's the tiniest room!! Thanks!! Question though, can plaster be put directly on drywall? My ex tore out ALL the original plaster (the bastard) and so now I'm putting drywall up as a base. I'm thinking I have to put on an adhesive or bonding agent?

Beautiful skills and love ❤️ the stories TIC TAC HA HA MINT RIGHT , I am disabled from many things , I try to do my home 🏠 yet kids are still in school no time for other relationships, then being a mom , I want my house 🏠 to be to its original beautiful look from 1800s , Thanks for all the films, Wing Tools ⚒ squire or swimming pool trail with thin brush with water 💦 awesome 👏 I need to do windows too . I was approved for Windows on a program after moving in to home 🏡 then my mother & older sister stole my I D it was , is bad thief habits , Chalking two days Kirk & Jason I enjoy watching , My home 🏡 was going to get all fixed till assets taken by greedy jealous family members. I an so ashamed to call then family members, I don’t understand my (narcissist personality disorder NPD ) Mom or siblings greed , Yet I know watching your YOU TUBE my sons & I will be able to HOPEFULLY REPAIR BURNT PLACES MY OLDER SISTER AND HER FRIENDS STARTED FIRES AT MY HOME AS WARNINGS NOT TO GO TO SHERIFF , Again about the horrors given to us after I reported the original theft of my I D my own mom stole license & B of A debt card from wallet, then latter she stole all our birth certificates , after my old I D expired. I wish to know all the truth about things she did & hope the pandemic doesn’t come to siblings or mother before I know the truth, Though I forgive the others for the wrongs they did , I still want JUSTICE & thank GOD JUDGE 👨‍⚖️ BOB OR ROBERT is at my church ⛪ Grace off off Cooper Ave in Crescent City California USA 🇺🇸, I spoke to him about my mother & older siblings con games that effected my older son more than I knew about & now leaning how it effected younger son in this Pandemic 🦚🦔🐲🐉🐾🌴🎍🎋🌱🌿🍃🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀☘️☘️☘️🦚🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🕊🐇🐕🐈 our pets have been effected too we NEED CAMERAS 🎥 TO SHOW YOU TUBE AFTER SIDING IS FIXED TOO. Q if windows are still original wood , siding is flat wood too over the original wood & others keep messing with it , How can my SONS & I , Do cameras temporarily to catch whom comes at odd hours , like they do , then keep lighting that’s solar to have added safety , still seal up each small hole 🕳 water 💧 seals to PROTECT HUNDRED TWENTY TWO YEARS OLD ORIGINAL WOOD SIDING UNDERNEATH 🐇 sorry about the rant it’s embarrassing that it’s caused PTSD FROM THE NPD OF MY MOMS WHO IS IN MY OPINION A DRUNK 😵 IF NOT SIBLINGS TOO. I am BULLIED BY THE SISTERS 👯 THAT GET DRUNK 🥴 WITH HER AND FEEL NOTHING KIND FOR WHO HELPED PAY THIER RENT OR BUY THEM A CAR , that’s what they told me in past it was for 🎍before they stole identity 🎋to commit fraud 🍂🌚🐚🥀🌖 my mom told my older son to come to the dark side & he is a shinning angel 😇 alive 🌱🌱🌱🌹🌷🌸🎄🍃🐚🌞🌕 I love my children so much , Though I was hit by car that’s owner lived in same apartments of where older sister lived before the theft of my I D , I had forgiven lady that might of thought I was older sister that’s horrible, She had not been a light since jr high , sadly she is how I saw her when she was as my loving 🥰 sister , That read the Bible with me, Sorry that maybe your opinion is not to trust in higher powers ? I believed that when my father met a man that’s younger sister could love him light was shinning in on him too, I am proud for that beautiful time he had then , I loved times with his new wife till they moved out of state , see it was 2007 my sister & mom stole from my wallet to steal all they got away with then, In 2013 Though is last time I saw my father living in Lee Summit Missouri , Because of my mother’s lies . My mom & sisters damaged my garage in 2013 where I had car stores that was stolen & found at older sisters friends apartment, So that PTSD is from always being annoyed by jerks who knew older sister & my moms friends that she calls family, See my moms NPD behavior is cruel , She is able to lie about things forever ♾ yet if you had records of her SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, then mine , you might see she used mine while I was 19 years old I found out more then my own name is attached to my S S # it’s very distracting to pay taxes to have non coming back , Because places my mom lived had said I worked there places my own mom worked , Places older sister stayed with her while raising my niece too. Palm Springs, I couldn’t believe the jerk things done after my mom sold her fathers property & maybe stole all my assets to pay her brother back what she might of taken of my grandfathers $ sadly greed is the worst form of human life habits 🐚🍄🍁🍂🌚🥀 It’s not that we use money to buy things, It’s that when one ☝️ works so hard for earnings & others think 💭 it’s okay to steal assets earned that what’s wrong. Then to harm anyone or thing as threats , I want someone to truly research what happened to my home to cause it to look the way it dose, I would leave to take kids to school & come home to others leaving my home 🏠 it was so scary , then they started sleeping 💤 in my vehicle they broke into while I had to get my kids to school 🏫 this was the most horrible feeling having others I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ in my house that I worked hard for then , You don’t know if same creeps will be in you home 🏠 again or others , to be broken into last year after sons father passed away, someone thinking 🤔 maybe he was in my home all along, I don’t post pictures of all the people I know that’s not handy for that wouldn’t surprise the people who had come to case my home 🏠 then came in at 3 am last year , it’s hard to sleep 💤 till I have professional cameras 🎥 that are not getting smashed by shaming people who stole my assets in Crescent City California USA 🇺🇸 & sold a home I was purchasing ten years almost all paid off , but I wanted to go to college in Santa Monica, So needed 4 credits in math then $2,000.00 more then I saved , When I told younger sister that I had $22,000.00 saved in 1998 while I was pregnant 🤰 she told my mom & my mom I assume told who gave me old expired prenatal vitamins, Then she thinks she can act while she is on drugs since 13 years old it’s all bad since then & my mother is no better than to give her what she could get free , I don’t want to be like my mother & that’s why though some don’t believe in it , I trust that people who read it can do Goodness in life forever ♾ I was about to die in 1998 years ago.... ❤️ love for my sons father & our baby 👶🏼 was my reasons to live life even though my mom had other plans for my sons father 🐚🥀🌾🌻🌞 He was my soul my world 🌎 my life ⚡️ my passion my protection, She made sure he was blamed for things after my horrible fate in 1998, God it’s just like yesterday all the things my mother put my man my kid & I trough , Believe things didn’t get better with my mom & I as if you had read as I think you did. 🌬💨🌊🌪🔥💥☀️🌦❄️🌫🍐🍌🍉🍒🥝🍅🍆🍍🍈🥑🌽🥐🌶🧀🥨🥒🥬🥔🥖🥩🥓🥞🥪🥙🥘🥫🍝🌯🍕🍟🍱 I changed , To become the Protector again as I was & had to teach my boys to see that though called family members it is not blood that matters if you can’t TRUST THEM. Morning Leopoldo, we don't use a primer we use a bonding agent such as Quikete or plaster weld which is pink. These stucco walls were painted, thus it was necessary to apply a bonding agent to the walls. Otherwise, my plaster finishes may separate in ten years or so. All our finishes have to adhere permanently whether inside or on the exterior. Or Ole Kirk got to redo them for free.👨🏻‍🔬
