One thing it might help other viewers to note is where you are finding 1/4" nails - these aren't listed under the "tools and recommendations" on your site and I was not able to find even a hint of them anywhere - I ended up having to 5/8" nails from Home Depot, which were the smallest I could find. HI Domenick M, I did a video on how to apply veneer plaster over a structo lite basecoat on this same fireplace, simply type in (veneer plaster over a structo lite) in our channel search bar. It's easy to apply diamond on a big flat walls with a hawk, trowel and felt brush, but on cut up stuff it's sort of tricky, Remember you can't sand Diamond, so when it starts to get hard have a water bottle to bring some of the fat back to life or the old style felt brosh. I use the felt brush on whole walls as it is faster than a bottle and I can work both hands. best wishes, kirk and family

Hi Kirk, love the vids. Learned from them alone and have done three bedrooms and a bathroom with diamond/imperial in the house with great success thanks to you. Quick question - I just attempted the kitchen ceiling with gypsolite (blueboard, durabond/mesh on joints, then bonding agent over everything about 30 mins before applying gypso). The gypsolite base never really set, it remained soft and cracked really bad. Everywhere it was over blueboard it easily came off in sheets with a putty knife. However, I couldn't scrape any of it off the durabond filled joints. Any ideas on what could have went wrong? Exact same conditions and application as when I did the sanded basecoat with success, so I'm really stumped here and figure I would try to get some advice from the master of plaster before reattemping. I'm thinking the material might have been too old but couldn't make out the date on bag, or maybe it was too thin (i applied about 1/4" thick). I'm tempted to just use the sanded base but really like the idea of the sound reduction from the gypso as my floors are so thin. Thank you and hope you keep up the great vids!
@coachdee51625 жыл бұрын
Stick to the basic joint compound .. No reason to use all these other plasters . Thinset for tile compound for taping and skim coating .Always prime walls before skimming 25 years and all i use is thinset and compound and never had a problem.
@rquinny205 жыл бұрын
@@coachdee5162 Thanks for the reply but I have to disagree. The reason I used gypsolite base plaster was for sound control within rooms and between floors, which basic joint compound just doesn't do. I just finished doing the walls and ceiling in the living room with the gypsolite base and veneer finish, and the difference in noise control was amazing. Also, I was able to mud & tape the joints, fill the low spots, & apply the basecoat in the morning, and finished with the veneer that evening. One day of work and a sore arm but the room is done. We might even leave the veneer finish as is and skip painting it altogether. The time saving, lack of sanding, and lack of mess (minus some dropped plaster here and there and cleaning buckets/tools) makes me refuse to mud & tape drywall the regular way ever again. Give the plaster a shot, if anything its more fun, cleaner, and a pretty decent workout!

Evening Ryan, I would have suggested diamond or imperial base coat for the ceiling. Me, I could have applied one coat of Diamond, but this takes a bit of practice as it can blister or spider check if it's not applied just right.🧞♂️ Your question, I've never used, "gibsolite," I believe if you do it should be over metal lath or wood lath, why pay a fortune for a "plaster of paris," sort of product, when Structo-lite would work much better. Evening Coach Dee, many ways to skin a cat.🧞♂️ You have no issues of separation as that does not happen when gypsum is allied to sheetrock. What Ryan wants is a solidness or strength that 30 coats of gypsum could not produce. The sand and additives, such as crushed limestone or other aggregates, give these plasters the intensity he's searching for. Most fireplaces around the world are made of bricks, as they can get hot with little to no issues. The Structo-Lite plaster does indeed have fire, sound, and insulation values. No, bricks, blocks and or concrete won’t expand, thus no cracking. If we were going over wood there may be some in the future, it depends on the structure movement, plaster does not crack unless the underlayment does.

How are you doing Kirk . Big fan fellow plaster man. Wanted to share an experience I had with Structolight I wanted to see if you answer for me from you experience. I had a room that was sheet rocked . Applied my bonding agent and used Structolight as my based coat. my first coat I applied cracked like an egg everywhere . I put a second coat and got the same thing but only in certain spots. It seems to me that what happened is some that is indicative of steel troweling cement. I did a second coat and went over it with a stucco brush to try and open it didn't have serrated Darby. Still cracked like an egg. Was my app thickness to thin ? Is my substrate the problem ? What did I do wrong ? Also the structolight seemed to have poor adhesion was able to scratch it off . Taping mud would of adhered much better even without using a bonding agent . thanks Mike

Howdy Mike, seams like the bonding agent you used was old or not of good quality. Evening Patrick, I have done this a couple times, what I did was to cover the floors well, then use a Hudson sprayer or water hose if you can get it in there, spry just the ceiling, then scrape off with a trowel. what you find under there determines what plaster you may need, chances are only a bonding agent and a single coat of Diamon veneer plaster. FYI, to grind that gypsum off will be too much dust. Also, you can't trowel down smooth Structo-lite as it has sand, no one can give a smooth level 5 finish with that basecoat. Kirk, is structolite suitable for general repairs and patching on wood lath walls? It seems to be the only plaster material that is available in the Indianapolis area. we're doing some repairs to a late 1800s home that had been converted to apartments some number of years back. We have a section of wall about 32 inches wide by 90 inches high where all of the keys broke and the plaster released from the wall. The lath is solid and there is no visible water damage. We have removed all of the loose plaster and are down to the bare lath. We cannot find anyone who does plaster repairs around here, so appears we will need to do this ourselves. I am aware we will need to use a bonding agent on the lath. Would using structolite to build up the base and then finish coat with drywall mud be an acceptable solution? I have read some things online of people using a combination of mason sand and plaster of Paris to make their own plaster mix. Is that an option? The only other option I can see is the Menards Home Centers in the Rockford Illinois area stock a wide variety of actual plaster mixes. I do travel to Wisconsin with some regularity and could pick it up on one of those trips if it would be significantly better to use something other than structolite or a self mix. that would cause some delay in US finishing this project. Any guidance you can give would be appreciated. Mike

Howdy Byron, if it were me I'd go to the nearest Home depot, Lowe’s , plastering material yards or even the small hardware stores and purchase some sheetrock compounds, these compounds set in 20, 40, 60 and 90 minutes and can be applied almost as thick as you wish, USG and Westpac’s are really popular for this quick patching. These compound come in 20 pound bags of dry power, yes you have to mix with a drill in clean buckets “it’s a bit of a drag” however the premixed sheetrock compound take forever to set and require many coats. I too use Diamon plaster as it has no sand, so it can be smoothed troweled. Here's a tip my friend, I can smooth even the gluey structo-lite plaster down If I put an inch or five on, the secret or tip is to wipe your trowel down with your sponge float with every stroke thus the water helps the trowel glide across the structo-lite without sticking.

Also, can you mix up plaster from a combo of powders such as: cement, grout, mortar, etc?
@StuccoPlastering8 жыл бұрын
Evening Mike, structo-lite is a gypsum based plaster, it's great as a base coat, but is gluey to finish with, if it were me I'd get some finish plaster such as diamond or imperial to apply over the structo-lite. Plasters are a technical name for interior plastering, stucco means exterior as a rule. Cement, mortars and grout are cementitious so, no, you can't use an exterior cement to make an interior plaster. Here's where it's gets confusing, most folks including myself call applying stucco on exterior walls, "plastering" but we generally use cement plaster which is specifically designed for exteriors, can you use these inside, I have many times but don't recomend the average person to do so. cheers, kirk giordano plastering

We have done a first coat of structolite on our brick fireplace in the manner you say. Our brick mortar lines are set Back from the brick. It looks good when it’s wet but then as it’s drying it begins to get lots of small cracks in it. Is this normal? Did we make the mix too thin/thick ? Can we do something to prevent this? Does this affect the stability of it? Will the veneer finish coat do the same ?

@@timandchristinelassen4485 Good Evening Tim and Christine relax, this happens for many reasons, the first being over troweling, if it's your first time and your nervous about getting it right, one tends to keep on troweling to make certain it's just right, this over troweling breaks the packs.😏 No worries, a finish will cover/bridge all the cracks. 😉 Tip: Before applying the finish coat, wet the base coat or the basecoat or the dryness of your basecoat will suck the moister out of the finish coat to fast, causing weak adhesion, blistering, and separations, this is true, but I'm not saying this to add to more anxiety but to educate so you then apply and say, Damn this is really easy.😉 Wet the basecoat with a spray bottle filled with water or wet paintbrush. Is it the same process if our brick isn't painted?
@StuccoPlastering5 жыл бұрын
Evening Danielle, yes. Unless you make sure, all the bricks are clean from all dust, dirt, and grime. Even then, I'd still recommend a bonding agent be applied to cut down on the suction. This means when you apply plaster or stucco to a brick surface. The thirsty, porous or dry bricks will not suck the moister out of the new plaster to fast. Kirk is structo lite an interior product only? ....
@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Good evening jack, yes, as it mixed with some gypsum, lime and sand. Lime and sand are okay for exteriors, but gypsums products like sheetrock are not supposed to get wet. Thay have a tendency to turn back into putty. Jonhy Guzman heey a bit late to the party but I like to add Portland cement type 1 to my structolite. I usually mix a 5 gallon bucket of structolite ( half a 50 lb bag) and add 2 scoops of cement with my 6" knife, and that will set in about 30 min. I play with the ratio so that it dries faster, usually 15-20 min like plaster of Paris. For smaller batched I'll add 1 scoop. Hope this helps!

Nice work Kirk! Can a person use structo-lite over a brown coat for an interior finish?
@StuccoPlastering7 жыл бұрын
Good Evening Dude, I Would not advise this as structo-lite is a basecoat and does not finish well at all, spreads out very gummy. Instead I would highly recommend a veneer finish. much easier with better results. Live long and plaster teaching plastering video’s

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thanks Kirk!! I'm trying to match a 100+ year old plaster job over brick. The plaster deteriorated so I've chipped all of the loose stuff off, had a Mason repair the bricks and then I plan on scratch/brown and then was going to use structo lite. I think I'll try a diamond veneer. Matching the 100+ year old texture might be the trickiest part.

Could you use structo-lite as a scratch and brown coat and finish it with 20 minute mud? Or could you just use multiple coats of 20 minute mud by itself? I have a similar issue going over brick on an inside exterior corner and I don't want to hang sheetrock for fear of mold.
@sethdistler85516 жыл бұрын
@@justinmcfadden6566 In one of Kirks other video's for finishing an interior fireplace wall .He uses outside corners , plaster weld, followed by structo-lite, then 20 min mud to get a smooth finish. looked great. I would not want to do sheetrock on brick either. , easier to clean very well. plaster weld, then structo, and 20 min. since both materials are gypsum based they will stick to one another very well. Kirk will have to approve this but Im getting all this from Memory of watching Kirks other video's.

Do you know anyone in the York PA area that can do this. I have a small brick fireplace that I want to look like roman clay?
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Hello AL, I used to suggest the BBB, However these new modern day applications or referral sites such as Yelp, can help you more than I can. I suggest now you log on to Yelp. Next type in, “Plastering contractors near me” on their site, and spend some time to read the reviews, any negative reviews such as they didn’t return my call, discard as that's not a review at all, but whining by some folks who don't understand how to leave proper information to interest the attention of self owned businesses, that don't have secretaries. Tip make certain any company your considering hiring has (Workman’s comp, liability and state licenses) Best wishes, Kirk Giordano plastering
