Lovely job. What is that orange tube hop up on wheels called please. I have a high ceiling in an orangery to plaster and that would be ideal. Cheers.

Coincidence there! ... I left school and started as an Apprentice Chef (1967) ... They worked Me 78 hrs a week (Plus College time) for £4- a week ... I jacked that in within the first year ... took a variety of jobs before being offered an Apprentice Mechanic job ... The two weeks before I could start it, My Step-dad (A Master Plasterer) said I could go in with him to earn a few bob labouring - (The Days of Sand & Cement, No beads, 3 x coat Siraphite & Hessian Scrim) - Stayed with it the rest of my working life - Purely accidental, but Soooo lucky as it was NEVER on my radar 🙂

Like you Robin, I can remember when everything was done with sand and cement, then Browning started to come in which was quicker and much lighter but nowhere near as good in my opinion. Pretty much everything we do now is dot and dabbed so it's all multifinish. I don't think i've ever met a plasterer who really wanted to be one, they can earn good money but lets be honest, it's a pretty tough way to earn a living.

OMG, I miss the pink gypsum... I moved to Australia 20 years ago where it is predominantly lime putty and white-set finish if over render- - terrible 🙄... Although I do believe it has become available in Perth now. Nice little video Robin, Great work Ash...

5 blokes turned up to plaster our new extension, they were done in 3 hours Around 80m2 I was absolutely gobsmacked at how quickly they were done 😮 And they taped every joint, bead, socket and downlights hole! Took a week to dry out mind

You would have seen in that video they had a Dehumidifier, that helps dry out significantly.
@therealdojj
@therealdojj Жыл бұрын
@@mikeread8001 there are pros and cons with that, dune day it dries the plaster out too quickly and this can lead to cracking But, then again, this could also depend on the type of plaster being used

5 years? To learn one skill? A carpentry apprenticeship is less than that and it's much more involved.
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction Жыл бұрын
A carpentry apprenticeship used to be 7 years, now it has been diluted down so much and there is no ay that you can learn enough in 2 years, so college is 2 years.... but learning can take a lifetime!!

@@ukconstructionI served my time 40 years ago. 3 years to C&G craft level. Advanced was another year. However I feel that it took me at least 10 years to become fully competent in all facets of the trade. Still learning bits and pieces at 60. The modern Apprenticeships are generally piss poor. 3 years only to NVQ 3. No exams at the end??? As all time served tradesmen know College is just a supplement for the core of the learning process which happens on the job so unless your pap is a chippie ( or you drop very lucky) you probably won’t get the necessary guidance on the job to be ready for life as an independent C&G. It’s hardly surprising that so few good tradesman are found under the age of 40. I’ve trained around six apprentices over the years. Only one went on to become a top tradesman.
