You are so right about the peeling of the paint. I bought this house in 2000. The master bath was redone by the previous owner and the shower is peeling on the ceiling in the same places you were plastering in your video. They replaced the plaster with sheetrock and I am sure used a layer of compound. Well it peels. I will get to that bathroom after. The bathroom that I am doing has the 12 inch rockboard 1/2" thick with 1/2" plaster then veneer. Not one bit of peeling on a 50 year old bathroom plus the tile is stuck on like cement. I will use blue sheet rock with the pink primer then the two coats you mentioned. I used 1/2" sheetrock and 1/2 inch structolite for my kitchen with 90 minute compound over that and that was a lot of work. It cam out good though. I had this idea of maintaining the plaster integrity of the house since I like the feel of the solid walls. However for the bathrooms I will go with the 5/8 rock and then your method which will give me the 1 inch I wll need to meet the door jambs and windows. Love your site. it has help me a lot.

Evening Eagles dude, thank you, there are so many methods and even more materials to skim sheetrock and I have done them all, this is the best and the easiest, you have about 45 minutes to apply the basecoat, fill your joints full, relax then when ready, it will darken then apply the finish coat, very easy especially if you can spread taping mud. Plus, It's the longest lasting shower or bathroom finish I am aware of. best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering channel

I've worked with plasters for years, much of it was lime based rather than gypsum based plaster. I've watched many of your videos. I've never commented before. Perhaps people watching your videos don't realize that you are telling them exactly what they need to know. Things that often can only be learned after years in the trade. Looking things up on a manufacturers website will prove to be exceedingly confusing, almost a waste of time. If you already understand plasters and plastering, the manufacturers website will be helpful for technical information, nothing more. You tell your viewers almost everything they need to know. They only need to add practice and lots of it. You are doing a great service to the public at large. I hope they realize that and appreciate it. I also want to compliment you on your family. Your son, who is occasionally featured on the videos, is a "chip off the old block." You should be very proud of him. Put simply, you are a good plasterer, more importantly a good man and you sure as hell have a good family. My sincere compliments. Let me close with a question that occurs to me every time you say " this is Kirk Giordano." Is Giordano an Italian name? Being 100 % Italian-American myself, I would like to think so but if not my appreciation and compliments remain just as sincere. Thanks Kirk and Jason. You guys do a service to the general public, maybe more than they know. I just wanted you to know that I realize the value of your work and I am sure that there are more people like me, who though silently watching your videos, not commenting, realize the good that you are doing. Thanks Guys

Evening rsrandy, Thank you for those kind words, I have spent a lifetime learning what I know now, with my plastering work, any time i fail at any aspect of plastering I have to go back and fix at no cost work I do, weather or not the materials I used failed matters little. so a fella like me learns to repair properly, after more than 500 videos I am now learning what people want to hear and what they find useless as I have also looked for advice and found I waisted my time from someones explanation also. I am a craftsman first and I'm now learning to be a so called "narrator." As far as the last name "Giordano" my mom was brought here from France towards the end of the war in 1945, she was beautiful, wonderful and also naive, she first had 4 kids by one man. Not a bad fellow, I might add. However the next relationship was with my so called father proved to be an error in judgment he was obviously an asshole, my mother at this point still spoke little english and lived in extreme poverty, again was easy picking for a man who might fool her into believing he would be a righteous man, he wasn't. (perhaps he fooled himself into believing he was too) I like the phrase of the man who raised me from when I was 2, who was a professional prizefighter and a meaner than a pissed off bull most of the time, but still a great man at heart, even when he said serious things such as "if he was on fire, I wouldn't piss on him to put him out. That portuguez fella who went by the name of Kid Enos from his fight days was my real dad at heart. As a boy I asked once why he fought so much his reply was they used to call me "clarence" his written name was Clarence Enos, things that make you go hmmmmm. thus I received my mothers last name from her hometown in northern Italy. I was born in this country, though, so technically I am Italian and Irish. best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering channel

@StuccoPlastering

Evening eagle2205, that's what I'm talking about! Plus taping mud has the tendency for the paint to peel off with steam from the shower as the heat from steam brings taping mud back to mud, allowing the paint to peel easily. This occurrence is not so with the veneer plaster system, as the heat from the steam does not affect the tough glasslike veneer finish. There are many more benefits but just the fact that you can do both coats in a day without sanding should be reason enough to choose veneer plaster systems. best wishes and "you can do it." Hi Bart, thank you, It's actually easier for an experienced sheetrock taper to apply the veneer base coat and finish coat than it is to apply taping mud. As taping mud for the final coat takes as much if not more skill in troweling, veneers just have faster set times. Best wishes, kirk giordano

Hey Kirk, I know you've mentioned in other vids that in order to veneer plaster over sheetrock that you have to tape and mud the joints before hand...can I just use the self adhesive mesh tape or do I start off like I normally would using joint compound over the joints? But then that would lead to sanding and seems counter productive. Thanks for your time and videos. Merry Christmas.

I'm currently at jobsite where we are using some veneer plaster finishes. These finishes are tinted, smooth, not painted, and they look fantastic. There is nice variation in the color that looks like a faux painted finish but better IMO. Considering the cost of faux painted finish, it can't see how it wouldn't be cheaper to go with unpainted tinted veneer plaster. Plus you don't get all the sanding mess, and much shorter time to delivery. BTW, the plasterer is Irish.

Greetings Kirk & Jason, I have been doing some wall and ceiling repair and wall resurfacing work in a 1912 era dwelling' bedroom using USG Imperial Base Coat and USG Imperial Finish Coat. The base coat over the recently cleaned and water moistened lath, following in the next work session with the plaster finish coat. As you describe in this video, it is durable hard plaster finish when dried. In this video you remark that this is a good two plaster system for kitchens and bathrooms, my question: is there another type of plaster base and finish coat plaster which should/could be used for a living room, hallway, closet, bedroom,, or are the Imperial base and finish plasters suitable for general interior use as well? Thank You for this informative video as it relates to the plaster work I have been doing this summer/fall at home experimenting with the two plasters trying to fill and repair the walls and ceilings and obtaining a dried finish which matches the original plaster look and feel. As you state a time consuming task when still figuring out the basics...Thank You for your informative and instructional; video series...

Good morning William M Popper, your welcome and yes, there are a few other veneer plasters, However my material yard Westside building material located in Oakland with material yards throughout the country sells just the Diamond and imperial veneer base coats as well as the finish coats. I can't tell the difference when applying either, but it's a known fact that the imperial base coat is a bit stronger, therefore I generally use the imperial for the basecoat and diamond for the finish. There is also red top, but I have never tried it, as again my material yard does not stock it and there's little need to, as USG, I believe is the maker of both diamond and imperial and more sought-after in my area. I have no desire to look for a different product when both these veneers work excellent. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering and stucco network

Kirk, long time no work for me… NOW I am trying to get back at it. So as you may recall I have a 120 year old house with old plaster so I am repairing it to original building specs.. did that sound professional…hahah Anyway so I have the Imperial Base Coat special order for me and then the Diamond Lime Top Coat. So I have cleaned the slats and painted them with the Pink Stuff and I completely agree about helping to keep track of what you have😂 done or not done besides it helps with motivation. So the questions I have: 1. I put the base coat on top of the slats but how do I build it up to match the ¼ thick or more base coat that exist. If I have holes its easy but ¼ or ½ the ceiling how to I build it up to match that thickness. Do I cover all the slats pushing into key it which is very thin then wait until that layer dries then do I have to put more bonding agent on top of that to get the next coat to stick. Do I keep building up with Base or just put the thin coat and keys then fill the depth with the Diamond Lime coat. But what If like in the storage rooms its only base and no Diamond Top Coat yet and still very thick. 2. So in the storage rooms I do plan to finish and put on a Diamond Top Coat with potential designs do I need to put bonding agent pink stuff on the whole room before the Diamond Top Lime Coat goes on? 3. What are the cases where I can use water saturation instead of Pink Bonding agent? 4. How many days can I waits in between coats for building it up since I have a very bad back and end of day work is only because I cannot stand up straight nor barely walk so it will take a few days before I can get back to it. 5. Which coats do I need to leave it messy in order for it to key into the next coats and is that even with bonding agent or water? I bought the Scarifier for that. I have bought all the tools so far that you show and recommend. Thank you for setting your sales page up but I think it should be right on the amazon website so people can compare and it still applies to your account. I have yet to find that $120 big stapler you showed. Anyway I think your site is priceless for me and many others. Can you show how to actually mix the products what is too thin or too thick while mixing it. I see the bag says no more than 2 minutes but then I get to the site and its hot and now hard so I carry it back to add more water… ugh! Help Please.

Morning, first on the ceilings, they can be only half-inch or whatever you want. As far as do you need to apply a bonding agent for the finish coat? no. The finish coat adheres by suction, Naturally moistening the base coat is necessary. Do you need to apply a smooth finish coat? No, you can leave just the basecoat, it will have a sandy finish but so what, your house your rules. best wishes, 👨🏻‍🔬

@@StuccoPlastering I’ve emailed you in the past perhaps I’ll send pics. I’m worried that the next coat of base won’t adhere to build up to the thickness that already exist. I’ve pushed it through to key it but still have at least a ¼ inch of build up to go to match what hasn’t fallen. I’ve been using a water Elmer’s glue mix hoping it will bond to the 1st base key coat then mixing more base to build up. I will put the final diamond coat finish lime coat on after I get it all built up and thick enough to match. Should I use something else?? to fill in from the very thin base key coat that still outlines/shows the underlying slats

My local USG supply house only stocks Structo-Lite and Diamond Veneer Finish I am renovating a house built in 1909, with all plaster walls. I have repaired and restored almost all of the plaster walls, except the kitchen, which is too far gone. I would like to put up some drywall and then plaster over it like you did in your video, however I do not have easy access to a Diamond or Imperial Basecoat. Kirk. I have been taping Sheetrock for about 20 years now with J. Compound. I want to do this and Learn this technique but I'm somewhat overwhelmed with all the different applications: do you have a video that explains all of the different applications you do? For example, you do stucco on exterior applications. Then you do plastering inside for surfaces such as bathroom ceilings where a person would like a harder surface which I now realize is called veneer plastering. Would you please in your response just indicate all of the different types of surfaces which an expert like yourself does? 1. Exterior. (what is done by a plaster man on exteriors? Just stucco or what you call "cement plaster"? 2. Interior: please indicate what products are used inside by an expert like yourself? What is the product called which is used inside and for what situations is each used? You are such an expert that you are making our head spin. But for us who want to learn this, it is somewhat overwhelming because we do not know where to begin. You are an excellent tradesmen and I would hire you in a minute because of one reason: YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO. And as a contractor myself, I know that if one does not love what he does, you shouldn't do it.

Howdy Spencer, thank you, it takes many years to learn to apply taping mud properly also, in fact I find applying taping mud to a room more difficult. Applying the veneer system will be easier than applying taping mud, but only for a fella or a gal who has mastered the art of applying tapping mud. This too takes years to understand how to with set times. If you gave yourself some time to apply the veneers you will realize quickly the set times, it all take practice with being attentive, notice when it starts to darken, you between 10 to a half hour depend on the water to spray on it to bring it back to life, you have a strong edge as to be skilled in tapping mud applications. Never have a fear, as if you make a mistake of it sets to fast, simply skim over and call this lesson 1. Hello Kirk, My wife and I really appreciate your videos on veneer plastering. We are trying to apply veneer plaster to walls on a new building. We've put up blueboard and are using Diamond Finish plaster. We've tried just going for one finish coat without a base coat with mediocre success. One problem we've encountered is the appearance of blisters or bubbles. What causes them and how can we prevent them? Another question is if we try to do an initial scratch coat and then final finish coat, how long should we wait between coats? Can we let the first coat dry completely? Do you recommend that beginners like us go with two coats? Why should this help?

first let me say, your videos are awesome. I have a question about lath and 20 gauge self furring stucco netting. I see you use both. I don't want to take up too much of your time so I will be as specif as possible as it regards to my application. I do tile work and have recently learned about "fat mudding" That is what we call it here. You may call it something different, it is using tar paper over bare studs then metal lath or chicken wire then Portland cement, sand and lime. floated on about a 1/2 in thick to get a nice and plumb, flat wall. I see some people using 20 gauge self furring stucco netting and others saying you have to use metal lath. Which is the right way to do it? Also if I am only tiling say 1/2 or 3/4 of the wall can I fat mud the whole thing and then come back with a diamond veneer to the remainder of the wall and add color to that instead of painting?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 жыл бұрын
Evening Shane, easy peasy lemon squeasy, 20 gage wire is used for tile or for chicken coops, the 17 and 18 gage wire or stucco netting is for stucco, which is also called cement plaster. In a shower with shear wall you can use the 20 gage stucco netting, where it's just studs the mesh netting is preferred as between the stud the stucco netting will allow much mud to fall between it. As far as colored stucco in a shower, I don't do this anymore as all the finishes, weather, cementitious, limes, and acrylic's, fail, not will they, they all do, and need constant maintenance, I have better things to do with my time than keep an eye or shower walls, so inside the shower I recommend tile, outside the shower where there are drier conditions you can add color to the diamond or whatever venner you choose, good luck getting the exact color you are trying to create. Cheers, kirk giordano

Hello Kirk! I've been watching your videos for years - first comment. DIYer here. My house was built in 1908 and I've done tape and mud for some of my repairs and renovations. I'm skilled enough, but I don't like it compared to the plaster walls that are still intact. I'm going to do a closet soon for my next renovation and I'd like to start trying my hand at Imperial base veneer and Diamond finish, just like you do in this video. I can find the tools that I don't already have - no problem. But the USG Diamond and Imperial veneers are proving to be a nightmare to find (I'm up in Minneapolis). I can get them at Menards, but I have to buy 30 at a time. Do you know of any online shops that sell these products in smaller quantities?

@@StuccoPlastering I lost my order of Diamond Veneer Basecoat, which is probably a good thing because of how terribly expensive it is (due to shipping). I ended up (in total) doing Durock, taped together with fiber tape, filled in with Durabond 90, painted with Plaster-Weld and Quikcrete Bonding Adhesive, basecoat veneered with Structo-Lite (which I found pretty easy to work with) and finished coated with USG Easy Sand 45. I wetted each surface with a garden spritzing tool just before application, did my best to trowel to a fine, flat surface with that same garden sprizter and my trowel after each coat began to set. I have a considerable number of holidays and other various imperfections, but the walls look pretty good to me, given how much of a novice I am. It was hard work, I'm amazed you've been able to do it all these years. I hope my choice of Easy Sand 45 doesn't come back to bite me in time. I don't think it has any lime in it, and I believe Structo Lite is meant to be applied with a lime finish. What do you think?

How would you approach uneven drywall thickness?. I have let's say about 3/8 in. difference. Plus there are some 3/4 in. gaps in a couple spots. Let's just say some bad drywall work. 😁. Would you advise some prepping with quick set drywall mud in big gaps and voids?. Should I tape and mud some of the bad spots first?. Then use bonding agent and Diamond veneer coats to blend into existing veneer finish. I'm a bit perplexed 😖. I admire your trade!. Looks like most of your patches are pretty minor!.Seems as though I have a bit rougher craftsmanship to compensate for. Thanks 😊

Hi, it is beat to fiber each all seams, where you have new sheetrock walls and a completed ceiling that is already finished. You can just touch the ceiling with the tape and plaster up to it, thus not getting any mud on a finished ceiling. Excellent question.😉

Hey sanchez, once you add water to any product it must be used that day,. Premixed taping mud is an exception it can be used, then a bit of water put in to keep the air off the mud then reused. But again this is a premixed product. All powered plasters whether gypsum based, limes and or cement plaster based once water is added should be used asop, as this action of combining water starts the initially set and continue to set in contact with carbon dioxide in the air. Good luck, luck is actually the residue of being well prepared. kirk giordano Plastering

Sand finish is mixed by batch of: 30 lbs of keenes cement 100 lbs of autoclaved ivory lime (Or equivalent refined finish lime) 200 lbs of silica sand This will mix a 30 gallon barrel full which will do a average bedroom. Plaster will set by evaporation. Does not have a positive set. We always save extra by souping up the plaster in our barrel then wash down the sides leaving a couple if inches on top. Plaster can keep for months. When reusing, pull water off the top and stir in a little fresh keenes. (Not too much)

Good morning, you can google "plastering yards near me" and pick it up, as most stores don't sell Plaster-Weld. Or better yet Buy Quikrete bonding agent, it says it's for cement or stucco, Quikrete is found at all HD stores and lowes and most smaller hardware stores. 💃🏻

Hi Kirk. Good stuff dude! I really love your videos. I probably owe my employer 100 hours for watching them ;-) Anywho... I have a few questions for you if you don't mind?....I am planning on veneering the existing walls in my 1872 Victorian. It had floor to ceiling wallpaper everywhere. I removed it all and want to paint. The walls are plaster/lath with some kind of veneer from yesteryear, with hairline crack repairs with some kind of blue latex stuff to seal the former repairs on it through most of the house. My questions...1) Do I fuss over a the wallpaper glue removal process? I am a bit obsessive at times, so I can if there is a concern that the glue will somehow prevent a good bond for the veneer, but I do plan on using Larsen Plaster Weld bonding agent too. 2). I have 3 50# bags of diamond finish coat for my 15'x15' parlor to do the job, but with this construction (lath, plaster, veneer, wallpaper adhesive evidence, should I also have purchased and apply a diamond (or imperial) base coat first? 3). Lastly, the ceiling has evidence of some very thin cracks here and there. Can I just skim them with veneer to repair or should I use a softer compound like structo-lite or something else?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 6 жыл бұрын
Howdy Todd, the bonding agent Plaster Weld by Larson's is mostly water after you apply it any loose areas of wallpaper will lift, scrape them off then apply more bonding agent in those areas. I prefer to use a basecoat myself as when it's dry the finish coat adheres much better without blistering or hairlines, A basecoat plaster such a diamond or imperial both made by the same company is as strong as structo-lite also manufatured by USG, so when applying a thin coat, so don't waste your time purchasing structo-lite for just a few cracks. Nice job though, your good. Ps i think the problem with the USA is the way they build. We here in the UK we do timber frame, but where very much into skimming, hard wall interior plasters, floating walls, sand and cement, where you guys tape alot. I hear down in the northeast there really good. But i was in Cali couple of years ago and couldnt get any plaster work. Youd make a fortune in London where a guy whos good and fast can make $500 a day. So what do you say Kirk? Ready to come amongst us Brits? Ps Your roofing over there aint all that either. Shingles? Please? Lol

Only difference between green board and reg drywall is a thin wax coating on paper.....its so useless that its not even required anymore in many places....in so cal I done several in different cities where it isn't required in water areas like it used to be And a good taper can tape that in few hrs with 20 min and topping...no sanding but in shower area plaster is stronger for sure

I have left over joint compound around ,and of course being a budget aware contractor ,i would like to use it up first . Speaking of cost effective ,i am probably one of the lowest priced contractors in my area . i find good stuff either in dumpsters,trash day , buy close out items,or just but bulk. Thanks Kirk .

I genuinely hate plaster weld. I always advise my customers to to re sheetrock if they want a proper plaster job. The final product is always better than plastering over glue. Larsons plaster weld is for people who don't want to pay for real plaster over new rock. The only time I want to use it is over wood lath where the 100 year old plaster has failed

@@StuccoPlastering my comments did sound angry and that wasn't my intention. Obviously the ceiling your were plastering was sound. I get so many costumers that have rooms with walls and ceilings that are in poor shape from water damage or with large holes and someone told them that bonding the wall will fix everything. I have to explain that glue doesn't patch holes and fix gypsum board that has been wet from a flooded basement. I just try to give them the best job I can with a fair price. I was asked to plaster over a wood paneled wall that was glued to cinder block. I pulled out the 5 gallon bucket of plaster weld and did it with much reluctance. Finished and was paid. I enjoy your videos and never get tired of seeing new techniques
