Again, this is called Veneer lime plastering. The word "veneer" means a thin coat.
Veener is not the name of any plaster. Veneer means a thin surface.
Jason mixed this lime plaster in buckets.
I used what is called a diamond basecoat for the holes and a diamond finish for the skim coat, also known as the veneer finish.
Diamond plaster is usually found at plastering material yards such as Westside Builders.
Home Depot says they sell it, but I have not seen it there.
Yes, folks, we, too, get beat up sometimes for various reasons, as in this video. The materials we just purchased had issues, plus the weather played an odd part; what should have taken us four easy hours of skilled applications instead kicked our ass with 9 hours of using past bits of knowledge and skill but now mixed with raw physical strength.
Fortunately, it's just another day at the office for us.
This video shows some tips about lime plastering for interior use while I'm explaining.
Plastering is a term used for interiors only, and Stucco is a term used for exterior use only or as a rule.

Another wonderful teaching video. Was thinking of Kitk all day as I fiilled in some big voids in a 1921 house up here in Canada. Turning 2 closets into one large one, involves some framing removal and brokem plaster, even when done very carefully. Owner stopped by with his 5 year old, and mentioned to her , ' this is an artist in motion' That compliment goes straight to Kirk. Thanks for everything.

I'm a tile contractor in Ct and I scratched and brown-coated my house using traditional cement stucco but I wasn't satisfied with using a traditional finish coat because of the cracking which is typical over our wood frame houses. Kirk introduced us to an acrylic product (Stuco-Flex) that solved my cracking issues and was tinted to a color that was perfect for matching the wood shingled section. So I want to thank you, Kirk, for being a great advocate for your trade and willing to share your knowledge. My grandfather started the family business during the great days of terrazzo floors used in all kinds of buildings (hospitals, schools, municipal buildings, churches) and I think I see you standing on a beautiful terrazzo floor with a great design. It was also a labor-intensive process, like yours, but the end product was unparalleled. I'd like to add that there is really nothing for ultimate satisfaction like the trowel trades.

Morning Drake Dude,My fellow trowler, speaking of the travertine tile, we set all those with Sika-Flex 1A polyurethane caulking, it's adhesive sealant as, the ground moves in our area, everything's built on sand. Jay and I used two cases of that crazy strong caulking. Now Stucco-Flex sounds similar but is the best acrylic stucco possibly sold in the United States.👨🏻‍🔬

Man there is no substitute for experience! It is a joy to listen to you. So true about knowing the history of things! I got an old stone building about 600yr old. The biggest problems i have is recent work done in the 20th century by people who don't know old buildings and use the wrong materials.

Howdy Red, you can type that question in our channel a a video will magically appear to show you how we do it. Yea, Jason mixed this lime plaster in buckets. I used what is called Diamond basecoat for the holes and Diamond finish for the skim-coat or what's also known as the veneer finish. Vereener just means a thin finish coat.👨🏻‍🔬

Is bonding agent also used when adhering gypsum-gypsum (whether it be sheetrock or gypsum based plasters)?

Excellent question, no when applying tapping mud over Sheetrock there is no need for a bonding agent. When applying a Lime Plaster or timed Joint compound we apply a bonding agent.

Hey Kirk / Jay … I used ekoplast 50 on my fireplace looks great, now on to the lime..do I skip the basecoat and just use the finish on top of the ekoplast ? I’m so dumb I bought a bag of type s Lime from home depot.. please help! You are correct that home depot doesn’t carry the Diamond brand , atleast here in Long Beach, Ca. Thanks!

Howdy Josy, the ekoplast is the basecoat, you would have to google, "plastering yards near me," to buys either USG's Diamond or imperial Lime finish coat. You could just finish it with a 20 minute joint compound also, it won't be as strong as A lime plaster, but there are no rules. Cheers.

Hey Kirk, I’m a plasterer from the UK so I’m very experienced with gypsum plasters. I’m currently living in BC Canada. I’ve been asked to skim some textured ceilings here and I have access to Diamond Veneer Basecoat and finish coat. How would you suggest I go about doing these ceilings? Will I have issues applying basecoat thicker than 1/16th. Any advice would be appreciated.

Good Morning User Dude, clean the surface well, apply a plaster bonding agent such as Quikrete or Plaster-Weld, apply your basecoat, thickness doesn't matter much 1/16 to half inch. With new construction over sheetrock it's normal to apply 1/16 to one eighth, But with existing I apply as think as necessary. Allow to dry, then apply the finish coat. BTW, veneer simply means a thin layer. Cheers.👨🏻‍🔬

Diamond plaster sucks! Kirk is a hell of a plasterer but diamond is plaster with lime in it, it’s not lime plaster. Lime doesn’t set in 15 or 20 minutes! NHLs don’t and high calcium lime damn sure doesn’t. Diamond is adulterated trash plaster compared to real lime plaster.
