I painted plastic Army Men figures applying acrylic paint only to the bits that differed in color, from the molded plastic: boots, weapons, flesh, etc. Super-fast painting! I brushed on Minwax Polyurethane Stain -- Royal Walnut color, to finish them. It worked great, for around 10 years. After that, the paint, and the urethane-stain, began to flake off. it was, and it still is, very disheartening. Years ago, on an Army Men forum, one fellow stated that he boiled his figures in water, for around five minutes, to remove the oil. He then painted them normally, without a sealant, without issues. I have never tried that. The boiled water becomes toxic, and the pan cannot be used for food afterwards, either. My plan it to seal my Army Men figures by brushing on Mod-Podge Matte, first. It is a form of PVA Glue, which is the traditional "priming method" of old. I sincerely hope that will allow the paint to adhere more than 10 years. The Minwax Polyshades Dip Technique is superb at bringing the figures to a higher level of painting. It really makes a difference in how they look, with minimal effort. I would suggest you give it a try on some test figures. Be sure to use the water-based Minwax formula: minimal odor, when dried. I used primarily oil-based Minwax, and it still has an odor after 20 years... Cheers!

You can use this same dip method to get a quick shade on your figures too. Instead of applying a wash, use some quickshade and you've got the same job done in far less time. Great for speed painting a large number of figures. Then seal them using this method or spray paint and you're good to go. Great tip Bill!

Do not flock your figures until you are done with all painting and sealing.

Everyone has their own way of painting & sealing plastic figures. I use Future floor wax to seal mine. Since you are using a paint brush to remove excess sealer, why not just paint the polyurethane on with a brush. This would remove the dunk step and save time.

I can do that to but for the video and these figures I wanted them extra thick they look great. I am happy to checked out the video and I like the future floor sealer too!

Prime the soft figures with diluted PVA glue. If you do that you'll experience much less flaking of the paint.
