In this video we are diving into What's New in Plasticity 24.2. This new release has some great tools and we are excited to dive in.
We will be focusing on the New Commands but look below for a full list.
Remember if you are looking to purchase Plasticity use the code LEAD10 at checkout to save 10% and help the channel.
Plasticity.xyz
New commands or sub-commands:
• Square command (xnurbs/studio only)
• Move faces and items via measurements
• Rectangular array faces
• Radial array faces
• Move command supports moving measurements
• Face Unwrap creates a proportional sheet
• Deform solid, sheet, and wire bodies
• Rebuild curve: Rebuild curve with explicit control (degrees and spans)
• Rebuild face/surface: Rebuild surface with explicit control (xnurbs/studio only)
• Reverse command: reverses orientation wire and sheet bodies
Minor changes:
• Offset edge gizmo: New gizmo that resembles the two-sided fillet gizmo
• Draft face: Gizmo allowing offset when planar (non-reference)
• Draft face: Accept (unchanging) reference surface
• Copy/paste inherits material and name
• Alternative-Duplicate faces: inherit name and material
• Text tool: some additional fonts
• Construction Planes in Outliner
• Bridge vertex/curve has gizmo for continuity
• Touchpad: Use cursor for orbit point
• Autosave named files every X minutes (configurable)
• Outliner: Distinguish meshes and images in the outliner
• Outliner: context menu now has "move selected items to root"
• Outliner context menu: Group selection here & Group at root.
• Measurements panel: Show angle between two planes
• Group command, if all items have same parent, are grouped at that parent
• PolygonCommand: remember last vertexCount
• Measurements/Sidebar: Select faces by surface class
• Groups: Deleting a group moves its children to its parent
• Measurements: Copy to clipboard in user's preferred units
• Rectangular array: specify distance by extent or spacing
• Radial array: specify distance by extent or spacing
• Snaps: Closed polygon center point
• Snaps: Corners of images
• Snaps: Vertices and faces of meshes
• Snaps: Snap points for measurements supporting alignments
• Snaps: Freestyle rotate: parallel/perpendicular
Import/Export:
• 3mf import/export
• SVG import
• STEP import/export supports colors, groups/hierarchy
• OBJ Exports MTL files and UVs
• x_t/x_b import/export preserve colors/names/hierarchy
• .plasticity import with groups and materials and names

Thank you. I'm curious to know, from a CAD perspective, what features you think could be added to improve the software? I haven't come across any videos where people propose new features and compare them to other CAD software.

When i first started on Plasticity before it was public the sole purpose I was asked to join was to offer up CAD perspective. A lot of what I had asked for has come true like surfaces (wasn't there in the original Plasticity). I think a more robust constraint system would be my next ask. Being able to not just make tangent curves but drive them and keep them tangent. Right now you can make a tangent bridge curve, but if you manually start moving verts, you don't know if it is still tangent or not.

This looks like amazing software but as a total newb to CAD, I have to admit I'm completely lost. I'm working through your Speaker tutorial and it feels like it assumes at least some familiarity with the terminology and functions. I've run into the same thing with the Udemy "Plasticity Modeling Guide" course. Can you recommend a tutorial that starts with the basics? Something of a "Hello World" for CAD using Plasticity?

So sorry about that! I do have other content that will get you started if you are completely new. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5TKc35uoc97Z80 This is probably a good place to start. That video has a UI overview in the start and walks through some general modeling. We did update a UI video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXjRgqyml7Cmnq8si=pqs8rCI_etxEeF9z We also have a getting started modeling series which assumes you have played with it a bit and focuses more on workflows. kzbin.info/aero/PLBDfGh8A8kXVIrO1aizPFmRBy-A-G9svk&si=S0lEDdacx95fZJah i will add both of those links to the first part of the course so others can have them as references.

@@LearnEverythingAboutDesign no need for an apology! The fault lies on my end, I’m taking up a completely new hobby, it’s just part of the learning curve. I really appreciate the material you’ve produced so far I just don’t have the foundation to take advantage of it fully, yet! Thanks for the additional links I’ll dive into those this week after work. :)

Fusion 360 still useless in flatten/ deform or match surface
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign 8 күн бұрын
Right, you need Inventor or Solidworks to be able to flatten a surface. Match surface works ok in Fusion with "replace face". Also when you are in direct modeling you can convert a face to a subD form and tweak it similar to "Raise Degree" in plasticity. BUT the deform and unfold commands in Plasticity are awesome!!

There is still a lack of Match Curve and Match Surface. It will come out very perfect.
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign

Yeah. Match Face works but it never seems to be as expected.

So is 'Mesh Snap' is retopolpgy??
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign 7 күн бұрын
Sort of. Retopo is typically something thought of as redoing a mesh. With plasticity there is no mesh to mesh retopo. What you are doing is defining a curve or surface based on an underlying mesh.

Any idea if general file management on Linux is working yet? Will file open/save/import/export dialogs appear in the foreground, or still hidden (and modal) behind all other open windows? Will the same dialogs open at the last accessed folder for each of the different file access dialogs? Will file name extensions be automatically added to a filename when saving/exporting, if you don't manually add one?

Sadly I haven't used Linux so I don't know. I just did a check on the discord server and can't find anyone having the same issue. Seems most are using Ubuntu. which OS are you running?

@@LearnEverythingAboutDesign I've reported it on the discord, some time ago, but have seen nothing about it since. I'm running Linux Mint.

@@imacmill pretty sure from my linux days Linux mint is just Ubuntu with a Gnome coat of paint... it was my prefered OS back then!
