Thanks for the review… nice 3776 collection! I came upon your review when wondering about the different size Platinum nibs. I have three non special edition pens… I got the SF in 2016 Chartres Blue… liked the pen but didnt really know enough to really appreciate it (as you did). Was my favorite platinum nib until I picked up a Laurel Green with a broad last year… then just this week I got the Bourgogne with a C…. My favorite was the B, but now may be the C. Thanks again.

Worth the wait, and glad you managed to complete the video after your minor technical difficulties. Good to see the whole collection together. I am incredibly tempted to add a celluloid 3776 to my collection and I would really like to try out one of the soft nib after seeing comparisons. I will admit I really am kicking myself that I didn't get the Kumpoo when it was available.

I too really wanted the Kumpoo. I ended up with a Parker Sonnet instead. And the celluloid 3776 pens are great. I have a Koi, but I was also strongly tempted by the Jade green version. And the soft nib is the one to go for!

I have 4 of the 3776 Century versions. - Chenonceau White, M (Noodler's Red-Black) - Chartres Blue/Gold trim, UEF (Noodler's 5th . Massachusetts ) - Bourgogne, UEF(Noodler's Black American Eel) - Laurel Green, SF. I tried the Noodler's Manjiro Nakaha Whalemans Sepia with the SF, but the ink didn't take to well with the nib, so I tried the Noodler's Walnut and that worked much better. The UEF nibs are my favorite nibs but I get along with the other two that I recently got. Great pens. Thanks for the video....excellent job. The weather here in Colorado is cold,snow,.....warming trend on its way (mid 40s to 50s)....and this will probably repeat itself.

That Noodler's ink needs just the right pen or it is pure misery! I haven't tried it in a 3776, but I'll take your word for it. We're warm right now (30s/40s) but we're headed for even more extreme subzero weather next week.

@@WaskiSquirrel Yeah, I like to think of ink as a type of oil for fountain pens, not all ink/oils will work the same. Case in point: my Boston Safety Pens I use pigmented inks in them and never had an issue with them(true, the nib does stay submerged/sealed in the ink plus it's also an ebonite feed)......but, I definitely will not use the pigmented inks in my other fountain pens. I think the Whalemans Sepia may have been a bit too thick for the Platinum nib (SF). Stay warm.

Great video Waski, nice to see them together. You are right by the way, the Music feed is different to all the rest. It has two channels. Yep, I have dismantled mine before now 😉
@WaskiSquirrel5 жыл бұрын
I never dismantled it, but I guessed it had to have two channels. Thank you for confirming it!
@Nojii15 жыл бұрын
No problem Waski. Another attribute is the music feed is a much tighter fit than the one channel feeds. Still friction fit but harder to remove and put back. I would advise against dismantling unless you have no choice.
@davidmathews21243 жыл бұрын
Nice comparison. I have three of this line. The Burgoyne, the Chartres in pretty standard nibs and a Black-n-Gold with the Music nib. All were dialed in perfectly by the factory, never a problem & have never dried out. There’s a lot to be said for bulletproof. The Music nib is my favorite…like a juicy stub with smooth edges. It puts down some serious ink. I’ve heard that it has a double channel feed…wouldn’t surprise me. I have a Sailor music nib in a white/ivory pen and it’s nice but the 3776 is quite superior. I’d like to get a Pilot CH 74 with their Music nib but pretty wide reports rate the need for serious adjustment right off the bat at about 50% likelihood. Hmmm. To me, the 3776 line is by far the most under appreciated series of any out there. Looking at the Green Laurel in SF now. Thanks for your overall excellent reporting. Really enjoy these vids. I have a ROKU and can put your KZbin stuff up on my BIG screen. FUN!
@WaskiSquirrel3 жыл бұрын
You're right about the dual channel for the music nib. And I agree: the Platinum version is better than the Sailor. I have no experience with Pilot's music nib, so I can't comment on that. Funny to picture my little channel on the BIG screen!

I got one with the ultra extra fine, I'm happy to have it but people considering it should know its so fine that it can and will cut into regular paper and at least for the cartridge that comes with it is very dry. I might just toss the cartridge to start using a converter and have the option to flood the feed. Thanks squirrel 👍

That's narrow (and sharp) if it cuts paper! The converters aren't too costly. But they are pretty nice.

Great video! The definitive statement on 3776s. I have an ultra ef, that I use for drawing & guidelines for watercolours, and it works great. It’s never felt scratchy, and that’s with using it on textured, cotton paper, so it’s a pretty smooth nib. By coincidence I ordered a broad two days ago; but now that I’ve seen your demonstrations, I kinda wish I’d gotten a soft-fine. The line variation really stands out. Thanks for an excellent review!

Thanks, that was fun. I have two 3776s, a Burgoyne sf that was catching the paper a bit that I ruined by micro meshing 🙁, and a makie one (the cheaper silk screen type) in a b that I really love. By the way, I watch Israeli news and today, at the end of it, there was a clip about an enterprising pizza delivery outlet in Fargo North Dakota who is braving the elements to its inhabitants delight. I thought, I know this place, it’s squirrel fountain pen territory 😃

My wife has one with a UEF nib (mistakenly sent by an eBay seller instead of the SF I ordered) and it writes just fine. If you're not intentionally digging holes in the paper, it's smooth enough for what it is and overall it's quite a nice pen. It's nothing compared to the SF though.

I'm glad to hear the UEF isn't as bad as what another viewer described. I would imagine that, as long as you're not applying too much pressure, they are designed to write on paper.

@reillyi76073 жыл бұрын
@@sathishrao7926 I found it to be quite finicky. To work well, it needed to write on paper that was smooth and pressed down against the paper behind it, if you understand me. If it was the backside of the sheet, or not quite the right kind of paper, or if anything was off, it would get unpleasantly scratchy. If the stars were aligned, it wrote magically. I got frustrated that one day it would be nice to write with, and the next it wasn't. I did end up getting rid of it. I keep looking at the Platinum 3776, but just not sure. I love the burgundy color and Amazon has a good price on it right now. The price is around $100 (no converter)
@WaskiSquirrel11 ай бұрын
I have both pens. From what I've seen neither one is losing its finish. The truth is that both pens are likely to lose their finish because nobody does gold-filled finishes anymore. Now it's only plated gold. I prefer the 823, but, with the right nib, the 3776 can be a lot of fun.

I love that music nib which I find works really well in a more upright position. The double broad on its own is too broad for my liking. I prefer an oblique broad/double broad. I find collecting pens for nib variation as opposed to finishes which is more a bonus for me.

Thanks for the comprehensive review on this pen. I did consider purchasing one a while ago and I may get the nerve to go through with it in the future. The mold marks would have bothered me too, but if the writing experience is excellent, I’d be able to make an allowance. I have to say that the seam on the acrylic koi (a beautiful finish) highly disturbs me. I hope the game was cancelled. What if the bus gets stuck in a remote area with no cell service?
@WaskiSquirrel5 жыл бұрын
They are good pens, but there are marks. However, I'm quite happy with them. I actually don't mind the seam on the koi: it's a celluloid pen, and that celluloid is made in sheets. The game wasn't canceled, but not all the games were played so that they were able to get out of here by 7:00. And you're right: breaking down in this weather is no laughing matter.

Funny that you like the bigger nibs, yet your handwriting looks best with the fine nib. You also have pools of inks when writing 'e' and 'l', because you tend to write a bit smaller. Interesting to see how you looked back in 2014. I find it slightly strange that a Platinum nib is used in a Nakaya when you compare the cost of both pens. Clearly the time-consuming and hand finished art of the Nakaya is the main factor for the price differences.

I enjoy the 3776 very much (except for the fine nib). Most people seem to agree with me on the soft fine. Kind of surprising to remember that summer of 2014 was when I painted this living room.
