Eric Burdon was about 23 but looked younger and sounded older. The guy on the piano/organ was Alan Price who later had a group of his own. Chas Chandler on bass guitar became the manager of Jimmi Hendrix.

I am a black Detroit 60's chick who was a teen who loved the British invasion groups like the animals and Beatles as much as Motown. The animals were called this because of Eric burton the lead singer deep growling voice. He later sang with the group War made a song called spill the wine. War made cosco kid and low rider. House of the rising sun was covered by nina simone and Bob Dylan. It's about a brothel and a black man leadbelly was said to have wrote it as he did other songs. Leadbelly had a hard life in the racist south but his songs were covered by white folk singers like Good night irene a big hit. I remember Eric liked black women. I loved the Beatles and British groups so much when l got my first paycheck l went to England. Loved the hospitality of the British people and even had my English penpal Howard visit me in Detroit. Leadbelly sang house of the rising son, he wrote Black Betty a big rock and roll hit by a group called Ram.

You have to understand the styles of the time for context. Today, they look like a "nice church group" to the audience in the 60s they were scruffy dangerous radicals in mod clothing singing African American music. The Horror! They have no clue ,those weren't the times they grew up in. They don't realize these guys and Beatles and others of late 60's were trailblazers. This does look so tame ,and needy compared to music and bands by 2000...much more opened in as far as dress ,looks, lyrics . Not as respectful as this time...the guys in these bands had the wild parties ,the sex, swore just like they do today ,they just acted more professional in public. Like Motown people..well polished ,great performers, dressed in suits, good looking but you hear about some of the stories behind closed doors....WOW! I admire professionalism in any job ,how you present yourself in public it is lost by many these days sad to say!

Of course, this is not live. At that time all guitars had electrical cords, as well as the keyboards. Also, Eric couldn't have walked around because microphones all had cords. This was a way to make sure there were no mistakes. A lot of the performances back then on TV were lip synced. We all knew it at the time, we understood the problems of electrical cords everywhere connected to multiple amplifiers connected to extension cords. If it were live they would have had all kinds of equipment on stage. Doing a performance like this they would have to step over cords and make sure their own cords weren't tangled and stepped on and Eric would be carrying a microphone.

The same can be said of the audio heard with most Rock videos. Even the older videos taken from live TV performances shown on KZbin use the studio record audio, because the TV studios did not have the necessary recording equipment to make quality recordings, so even if/when they were recorded the live audio quality would have been terrible.

an excellent example of what you said is watch Deep Purple "Child in Time" (i think it was recorded in '70 ) and watch how the musicians are all forced to basically stay in one place and the audience was told stay still so the whole thing could be recorded live while the musicians actually played the song and that was like only 3 or 4 years after this performance was filmed.

For those who weren't around back in the day. Most of the stuff you saw on TV was not actually done live. It was a recording and the singers were faking it. They were lip-syncing to their own song. You can also tell that the guitars aren't plugged into an amp. They are just going thru the motions for a TV show.
@anthonyglass7419

Re the gear not plugged in and the bands lipsincing is because the technology in the 60s & 70s wasn’t good enough to get a clean recording in a TV Studio while filming the video so the master from the recording studio was played and the musicians played along otherwise sound would be crap.

There’s a lot of confusion caused by the fact that the vinyl recording was done in one take: people think that it is this TV appearance that is meant, and then they argue about the lip synching - which is much more synchronised on TV than it is on these uploads. This clip was done because they could not appear live on the show, which was mostly live - because they were supporting Chuck Berry on tour,

Pretty sure The Doors on Ed Sullivan (circa 1967) were playing live, when Sullivan told Jim Morrison not to sing the lyric "Girl we couldn't get much higher" (because of the drug reference), and Jim sang it anyway, on live TV, causing The Doors to be banned from the Ed Sullivan show 👍😁

At this time in the UK, it was the norm to perform live for the chart shows (of which there were only a couple, since there were only 3 TV stations available in most areas.) But The Animals were on tour (supporting Chuck Berry, I think) and had to be elsewhere for a gig at the time the show aired live, so they had to record a segment earlier, which seems to be lip-synched. It was seen as a poor second to performing live in the studio. That was the concept, not a modern video concept.

The lead singer here, is Eric Burdon, who later formed the band War, and sang Spill the Wine as one of their early hits. He left them and their biggest hits without him were Low Rider and Why Can't We Be Friends. The Guitarist was Hilton Valentine (died 2021), Bassist Bryan "Chas" Chandler ((died 1996), also famous for financing Jimi Hendrix's first single), Drummer, John Steele, and Keyboardist Alan Price, who was the band's lead instrumentalist. About the comment about "one take" to get the song, Producer Mickey Most claims that the track took 15 minutes of studio time from start to finish.

You have been told several times: the original folk song, which had a lot more verses, was from the point of view of one of the ladies who worked at a brothel. Later versions, especially in the US were changed around and versus dropped. Sometimes when this happens, context is lost because the jumble of verses don’t make as much sense. A song by Judy Collins called Fennerio, that I have loved for many years, is actually a very shortened and jumbled song from a Scottish folk song that has many verses. I cannot make complete sense of song until having the Internet. I found the whole thing. That is what folk music does. As it gets passed down it’s like a game of telephone!

This is one of the oldest existing songs in the Modern English language, with versions going back to the 1600s. Sometimes it was named Rising Sun Blues. The House of the Rising Sun was a brothel/gambling house in Lowestoft in southern England, later versions 'moved' it to New Orleans. If sung by a man, it was about being a gambler, if sung by a woman, it would be about a prostitute. The basic theme is they are stuck in that life, and feel they must go back to it. The oldest recording of it was by "Tom" Ashely and Gwen Foster in 1933. Tom credited to first hearing it from his grandfather, who heard it around the time of the Civil War.

I had this opening riff as my ringtone for a while. Most men dressed up and were clean shaven in the early 60s when they went out in public, especially for travel. The Beatles, The Righteous Brothers, Elvis, Motown... they all wore suits. The Beach Boys wore matching clothes as part of their surfer vibe. With longer hair becoming more acceptable, and the uptight 50s becoming unwound, a more relaxed and casual look surfaced. I remember the newspapers mentioning that Richard Nixon's White House Barber was letting his sideburns down by 1/4 inch (no joke) to try to be more relatable to the new generation X kids. My generation, Boomers, took it even further with bold clothing colors, bell bottoms, love beads and such. Reactors often say "Oh I wish I was alive then.". Nah, man. You've got it at your fingertips. We had to wait to hear it on our AM radios.

I grew up in a village of less than 300 people in the sixties and seventies. I have to admit I miss those times as life appeared simpler. No two income families needed, housing was affordable, 3 tv channels that went off after 10 pm, and families got together with extended family every weekend. I knew all of my cousins growing up as my mom and dad both came from each having 10 brothers and sisters. Simpler and carefree times. We had a big enough yard to have the neighborhood play baseball or softball. Mom’s only reason for allowing all of the neighborhood children to come over to play was then she knew where her children were. In the winter we had a pond that we and the neighborhood children used 7 days a week. I look back now and realize we didn’t have much money but we had the best childhood, all 7 of my brothers and sisters.

My interpretation of the song is that the house of the rising sun is a metaphor for any addiction or vise, be it drugs, sex, gambling, thrill seeking, etc. How it sucks you in, takes hold of your life and consumes you in ruin. That's why it sounds like a cautionary tale warning you not to go down that path.

The oldest known recording of the song, under the title "Rising Sun Blues", is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it on September 6, 1933, on the Vocalion label (02576).Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley, who got married around the time of the Civil War, which suggests that the song could have been written years before the turn of the century. Roy Acuff, an "early-day friend and apprentice" of Clarence Ashley's, learned it from him and recorded it as "Rising Sun" on November 3, 1938. In the 1800s, this building was rumored to be a bordello run by Madame Marianne Le Soleil Levant, whose surname is French for "rising sun". The current owner, Darlene Jacobs Levy, restored the building and hosted Eric Burdon of Animals there. The Rising Sun Hotel Located on Conti Street in the French Quarter, the hotel was identified in the 1820s and burned down in 1822. Archaeological investigations at the site in 2006 uncovered items that may have been evidence of a bordello It could be referring to a jail when interpreting the lyrics but there are also historical documents showing proof of buildings in New Orleans called “Rising Sun.” In the 1820s, before it burned, there was a hotel called the Rising Sun located on Conti Street in the French Quarter.

This song was in the movie Easy Rider. The movie was about two motorcycle riders that go to New Orleans and go to the brothel called House of the Rising Sun, and they get in trouble with the law while they are there and try to leave New Orleans but get chased down by the law. The two riders were Jack Nicholson and Peter Fonda.

In 1964 I had jacket just like those. It was the height of fashion. At the height of popularity through the winter of 1964/65 I was in the Navy and stationed in Groton, Connecticut. This was played all over and was in juke boxes in every bar and restaurants This was probably from a TV show where bands couldn't play songs live.

Eric Burdon (vocals), Alan Price (organ and keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), John Steel (drums) and Bryan "Chas" Chandler (bass). "The House of the Rising Sun" is an American traditional folk song, sometimes called "Rising Sun Blues". It tells of a person's life gone wrong in the city of New Orleans. Many versions also urge a sibling or parents and children to avoid the same fate. a euphemism for brothels or Prison
@TheOnespeedbiker
@TheOnespeedbiker 2 ай бұрын
The House of the Rising Sun has its origins possibly as far back as 1600 France and was originally written from a female prospective about a woman's prison; the oldest American published version was from 1925 and was also from a female prospective. It was changed and rearranged hundreds of times, the Animals version from a male perspective was taken from a 1961 Bob Dylan recording (credited by Dylan to David Van Ronk). The Animals were the first to electrify HoTRS; Dylan said he was blown away when he first heard the Animals electric version and was amoung the many influences that turned Dylan onto Rockabilly. Dylan took on the "Hawks" as his background band in his Rockabilly transition, he toured with them for about a year; at the time they were simply referred to as Dylan and the Band. When Dylan and the "Hawks" parted ways, they retained the name, and continued as the highly influencal folk rock group, The Band.

So, that isn't where the electric organ is plugged in. It's a hinge. The one on the left looks original and the one on the right looks like a replacement. Just below that is a large round plug in, kind of like old stoves. There was a battery that it charged, so the instrument could be more portable and not clutter the stage with cords. And the House of the Rising Sun is a gambling house and they are talking about the addiction to gambling.

I suspect that this clip was made during an episode of Top of The Pops, a weekly half hour show in which artists from that weeks top ten appeared. There wasn't time for each band to set up their audio so nearly all of them were lip-synching which accounts for the absence of electrical wires. A few daring artistes objected to being made to lip-synch and went to great lengths to show how fake it really was.

Top of the pops wouldn't have filmed it in colour, b&w was much cheaper & they didn't broadcast in colour till 1969. This is on film, too high definition for tape in those days, also if it was tape the BBC would have wiped it to re-use (as they did to early Dr Who).

The group is called The Animals because lead singer Eric Burden was known for his growly voice and absolute energized chaos on a live stage (acting like an animal). If you notice in the video he is moving in a circle (like a caged wild animal), but it is not enough to let off his energy, so you'll see him bopping his head and constantly patting his hand on his leg. Would have loved to see him in his prime, but I was too little. Their song, We Gotta Get Out of This Place, is considered a Vietnam War anthem of sorts. You should check it out some time.

Historians have not been able to definitively identify The House Of The Rising Sun, but here are the two most popular theories: 1) The song is about a brothel in New Orleans. "The House Of The Rising Sun" was named after its occupant Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means "Rising Sun" in French) and was open for business from 1862 (occupation by Union troops) until 1874, when it was closed due to complaints by neighbors. It was located at 826-830 St. Louis St. 2) It's about a women's prison in New Orleans called the Orleans Parish women's prison, which had an entrance gate adorned with rising sun artwork. This would explain the "ball and chain" lyrics in the song. Peace out.

As far as the "nice guys" comment...I have read that Alan Price (organist) stiffed his band mates out of getting credit for this song. Thus, Price got all the royalties as the "song writer". That was a farce as the song was in the public domain having been written in 1933 or older. 1933 was the 1st recorded date (Rising Sun Blues), actual written date is unknown.

The bass player was Charles “Chaz” Chandler. When The Animals broke up, he moved forward with his goal to get into managing and producing. His found first big star playing in Greenwich Village, in NYC, a guy who went by Jimmy James. Chandler signed James Marshall Hendrix to a contract and flew him to London and found a jazz drummer named Mitch Mitchell and a guitarist named Noel Redding to play bass, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience was formed.

How come you didn't notice there are no power cords on the electric guitars? The lead singer is Eric Burdon. The Keyboard player is Alan Price. The tall guy playing guitar (Chas Chandler) went on to be Jimmy Hendrix's manager. The drummer is John Steel, and the bass player is Hilton Valentine. They may be lip synching for the video, but they actually recorded this in the studio in one take and only used 17 minutes of studio time. The Animals were part of the British Invasion following the Beatles to America.
