Bill Withers was just one of many artists I was introduced to by no choice of my own when my parents listened to music. And I love them still to this day. My dad has since passed and this will forever remind me of the love my parents shared. Motown, Al Green, Aretha, Ray Charles……………… 🙌

Bill Withers!!! He was definitely an awesome singer. I got to see him in concert in 1974. The Old Grey Whistle Test was the name of a venue that a lot of musicians back in the day played at.

Back in the 90s and 2000s (when Karaoke was king) that "I know" part was the main trouble spot for many amateur singers, and the main reason I never tried myself. Loved the song, but hard to imitate.

I grew up in a mostly black neighborhood.. I was the only white girl in my grade school class.. and in my early teens hung out with mostly black and brown girls.. this song was like an anthem.. We'd sing along with it.. and the key was to get the long "I know" completed with him.. all in one breath.

Dude. This song. This SONG. Like, I don't know, it just hits something that demands you listen to it no matter what. Like Bohemian Rhapsody or In the Air Tonight or Proud Mary (Tina!) or Respect, turning it off is like an insult to it. Also, he said he wrote that song about a friend's (?) daughter who was young and was always very bright and happy, but not in a romantic sense. It was like "damn, she's gone and the house isn't as nice and we hope she comes back". But, honestly, I like your interpretation better. Also, language is mutable. If people know what you mean, who cares how it's said?

This song is misunderstood. By saying ‘ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone’, Bill is using a double negative. Basically saying ‘there is not no sunshine when she’s gone’. Therefore he’s saying when she’s gone, there is sunshine. Get lost woman! 😃
