He also sang for another legendary guitar player Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple fame in a group called Rainbow. My favorite DIO song is "Rainbow in the Dark". Your "Ronnie James Dio crash course"😛😜: R.J.D. began his career in upstate N.Y. (in similar environs to where Lou Gramm [vocalist from Foreigner] grew-up and made his first inroads. Excepting that: Lou was more from the Rochester area and Ronnie was slightly-more "mid-state"). Dio's first successful/"break-out" band was actually: Elf (from upstate N.Y.) This is also where he altered his name from Ronald Padavona to: Ronnie James Dio ["Dio" being the Italian term for "God" or "Godlike"]. Dio also played bass (for certain periods) in Elf, but at a certain point he decided to begin concentrating purely on vocals, as his instrument. Elf recorded 3 primarily unsuccessful albums. During this time, the band also toured the U.S. and at some point signed with Deep Purple's management. they also opened dates on the Machine Head tour for Deep Purple (as well as, later, also, when D.P. was touring on the back of: the Made In Japan live releases). After [guitarist] Ritchie Blackmore departed Deep Purple (mid-1975), he, basically, "absorbed" Elf and created the band: Rainbow [initially referred to as: Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow]. {The band was named after the famed: Rainbow Bar & Grill, which was (and remains, I believe) a long-time, legendary and much beloved hang-out for rockers, in L.A. [including the infamous: Hollywood Vampires (NOT the group of folks treading on and off stages, in recent years, using that legendary name [because one of the former members is in that line-up] but the original "drinking club" which had many, many famed (and behaviorally "insane" at the time!) members.]). The first Rainbow album is: Ritchie Blackmore with Elf. By the time the recording of the 2nd album [Rising] came around, Blackmore had fired/released everyone from, Elf, save for vocalist: Ronnie James Dio. Blackmore put together the strongest (and most legendary!) line-up of: Rainbow Ronnie James Dio: lead vocals Cozy Powell: drums and percussion Tony Carey: keyboards, vocals Jimmy Bain: bass guitar [Jimmy was an old friend of Ritchie's, from England] and (of course): Ritchie Blackmore: guitars Following: RISING, Dio did one more album with Rainbow. the album was strong and the tour did well, but Dio had a need to move on. After Dio left, Blackmore, attempted to continue with vocalist: Graham Bonnett. The more pop-rock direction pursued by Rainbow at that point produced a successful single, but within a year-or-so, Blackmore basically, folded the band [It would get "rebooted" with a new line-up and vocalist: Joe Lynn Turner (from the New Jersey band: Fandango) in the early-to-mid-ish '80s ]. Near the time that Dio left Rainbow, Ozzy Osbourne got fired from Black Sabbath (and the band was falling apart). Geezer, Bill Ward and Iommi got their shit a little bit more together and decided they wanted to continue Sabbath. They got Ronnie James Dio to come in and at that point, the record labels were trying to promote a "Sabbath vs. Ozzy (solo)" thing. But both bands ended-up being successful and creating great music! Dio did 2 albums with Sabbath [Both wonderful!] and, then, finally got his stuff together to do a solo project. His old Rainbow bandmate Jimmy Bain joined him and Ronnie pulled Black Sabbath's "fill-in" drummer: Vinny Appice [younger brother of another legendary Rock drummer: Carmine Appice] along with him and formed: Dio. R.J.D. also acquired previously "mainly/primarily unknown" guitarist: Vivian Campbell [formerly of the NWoBHM band from Ireland: Sweet Savage[. Vivian Campbell was mainly a rhythm guitarist, but this is, really, what attracted Dio to him and Vivian became an '80s metal guitar god! [He, later, played in the "fill-in Whitesnake" live band, in '87-'88 and after the death of "Steamin'" Steve Clark 🪦😭😭😭😭 ...he became Def Leppard's second replacement guitarist (and has now been a longstanding member, for 🤷...around 30 years or so.)] Dio (band)'s debut album was: Holy Diver, which featured the song you're listening to as the title-track! Ronnie James Dio, sadly, passed away (of some form of stomach cancer😭😡) in 2010 | and the Metal community and music community, at large, still mourn his loss. 😭😭

The funny thing to me has always been they called metal the devils music, and that sign devil horns. But that sign is to ward off demons. That's because metal is gods music. I'm 100% in agreement about people reacting to music outside of their area. While it's always interesting to hear someone give an expert take from the inside this is much more interesting. First of all I get a real dopamine hit seeing people moved by songs I've listened to forever. Second although I may have been listingin to a song for over 40yrs people like you often call out something new and interesting I've never noticed or thought about. Really cool to see that new perspective on an older song.

Yeah - I saw an interview with Ronnie as well. The devil horns to ward off evil. I believe the actual name is mentioned in several comments. Ronnie would use the sign at his concerts as a part of his show to 'ward off the evil'. the audience picked up on the sign and mimicked it, and then it just spread like wildfire. Of course, because it was used at so many rock, metal, and 'devil music' concerts, those not in the know started to make it about a bad sign vs a warding sign. LOL.
