This is a classic by Yes. Another really good one is "I've Seen All Good People" by Yes. Definitely gotta react to this one as well.

Progressive Rock - a whole branch or rock into itself which included Yes, ELP, Kansas, Traffic, Jethro Tull. Heavily classical and/or jazz influenced. Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - if you like this song you will like from Traffic. Rick Wakeman on keyboards - one bad ass keyboard player.

Yes was a very experimental Progressive Rock band who created music few people could even imagine. One of the things I loved about their early "Sound" was the emphasis the bass player got in the mix. You always heard Chris Squire's contributions which were usually melodic while holding down the bottom end groove. He was the reason YES' music during this period usually sounded rather funky in stretches. Together with his jazz-fusion drummer, Bill Bruford, the YES Sound featured the most incredible 'rhythm section' in the history of Progressive Rock. That particular rhythm section hit its prime during YES' Uber-Classic Period: their 3rd, 4th, & 5th albums ( *The Yes Album, Fragile, & Close To The Edge* ). Chris' bass play absolutely dominated the band's sound during that period & it was wonderful. YES is definitely not background music. They've always been first & foremost a _musician's band,_ making music that musicians will listen closely to. You'll find a lot that you'll like in this band if you continue to sample their masterpieces of the Roundabout period.

I am the Old School when all of this Rock music was first starting. My Classic concert list is stupid ridiculous. The YES album DRAMA Will impress you. I guarantee it. It’s a stand alone, unicorn album in the YES catalog. You can start with the very first song Machine Messiah. At least give it a listen off your channel. It’s high level Art Rock. Very dynamic stuff. The whole album is badass. Only 6 songs. It’s permanently in my top ten. It’s a lot of sound.

As others have said in my day of listening to Yes back in the Mid 70s on it was Progressive Rock . But it does have a a great bass line leading to the FUNK as you say. This was when the band had its greatest line up of talent in the band. I would say Round about is actually 3 different songs made into 1 with all the time changes and solos. I saw Yes in 1977 and 1979 I remember Rick Wakeman having 7 different keyboard at his section of the stage. Man what a show it was

You absolutely need to react to Rush and go down the Rush rabbit hole. The greatest 3-piece band in history. Unmatched in their pure musicianship. I'd recommend starting with 3 of their popular hits...Tom Sawyer (official music video from 1981), The Spirit of Radio (from 1980), and Limelight (official music video from 1981)...then progress to their jaw dropping instrumentals...La Villa Strangiato (original in 1978 but react to Live in Cleveland in 2011)...best instrumental. Then onto 2112, YYZ live in Rio, and Xanadu live in Montreal in 1981. You can thank me later. 🙂

Coming of age in the late sixties and seventies I tended to follow what we called Head music which was generally listening music, not dance music and not a lot of top 40 hits But albums from artist ranging from jazz rock fusion to hard rock. I was drawn to great musicianship and originality with multiple tempo and melody changes in each composition. Jethro Tull, The Who and Pink Floyd are examples when disco thing was going on I followed New wave and Punk along with my continued Frank Zappa listening which is full Ideas good, bad, disgusting, brilliant and innovative with some of the best musicians who got paid for all the practice time and it showed, in all three concerts I went to. The tightest bands I have witnessed were Franks bands.

Most specifically this would be known as Prog rock. Which is known for being rock that tends to be much more complex, longer songs, more mixed meters, heavy instrumentals, and usually more esoteric or story driven themes. Often draws in influences from jazz, classical, even broadway. And yes, there is not anywhere close to enough rock organ in music these days.

Reminds of the Baroque period of classical at times. Rick Wakeman on keyboards always had my attention. He reminds me of Thelonious Monk and Rahsaan Roland Kirk of the jazz era.
