3776 Chartres Blue is in my bucket list. Looks so gorgeous, but not too much "executive style"

I wrote the word “hello” with a 3776 fine in a pen store recently and it’s my only experience with either brand but my initial impression is pretty much exactly as described in this video. I quite liked it. I tend to prefer a pen that’s heavier in the hand though, but that isn’t relevant to the nib. Thanks for the comparison as I think I have a better idea of what to expect from a Sailor if I ever get my hands on one.

I love both my Sailor and Platinum pens. I have the fine and Uber extra fine 3776 and love it. My Sailors are so dependable and just work. I tend to use the fude nib in those for drawing.

I have a Platinum double broad/course and it writes beautifully. The toothiness has kept me from trying more Platinum and any Sailor. I have gone the more Pilot and European route. But who knows what the future will bring. Thanks for the super video!

I own both Platinum and Sailor pens in the models discussed here. I prefer Japanese medium nibs to fine ones, and I prefer the Sailor writing experience to that of Platinum. Both pens are above being "adequate."

I have a Platinum Chartre Blue in F and I love it. It can be kind of scratchy but I think it depends more on my writing angle. Also have a 1911 Large in M and I find it to be too stiff if I press a little I can get some line variation, but I am not crazy about it. Maybe I had read too many good reviews of the Sailor nibs and maybe that's why I had so many expectations. I love Japanese F nibs and I I would buy another Platinum but not so sure about another Sailor

You must not put any pressure when you write with a Sailor nib, you have to let it write with its own weight. Then you'll see how well the nib is tuned.

Generally agree with all that you say. I do have a Plat with an xxf which is great for marking up printed paper things. It is, however, so sharp that you have to be very light with it as the tines can get stuck in the paper. But for shitty paper it is still precise and brilliant! I had a fine soft and I ruined it as it, too, was catching and i tried to tune it. I have a broad which is feedbacky but very nice. I have a nakaya medium soft which I had to tune as it kept on catching the paper. Looking through the loop I could see that the grind on the side of the nib was sort of flat and caused a sharpness on its edges on the sides (is that a Plat thing?). I have a Sailor fine which is smooth and marvellous and a naginata togi which is lovely - but has that architectish feedback. Both brands, in my experience are extremely well made and super reliable. Some people talk about the feeling of ‘precision’ with the Japanese nibs, I can relate to that.

My first experience of Platinum was a 3776 in Soft fine. I was quite disappointed when it was not soft enough and was very scratchy. I had to return it and the seller admitted that it was rather scratchy. It also had flow issues. On the contrary my first experience with a Sailor is the medium fine PGS - smooth, soft, has a slight bounce, line variation and is an absolute pleasure to write with (albeit small in size)!

Both Sailor ro Gears I have had were in a B nib and both wrote considerably finer than my Platinum 3776 B pen. The line on the sailors was finer than the Pilot74 in a M nib for example. So I reckon the Sailor B nib is no where anything like a western M or B nib.

Depends on the pen you receive. My 1911S in Bold nib has a line that's twice the width of both my 1911L in Medium and Platinum 3776 in Medium. These two have a comparable line, but Platinum writes with a lot of feedback whereas every time I pick up the 1911L I get a smile on my face. Just a hint of feedback. Very, very smooth. Smoother than my ill behaved Lamy 2000 EF that writes extraordinarily well at times, but in other circumstances gets scratchy.

I prefer the Platinum with the SF nib, I get more satisfaction with it than with the stiff Sailor F nib, which is very nice of course.

If you look at the tipping on the nibs under a loop I think you will see they are different, and this may go a long way to understand the difference nib the writing experience.

I was and still am very underwhelmed with my Sailor 1911. It's a M nib and has a lot of feedback, is scratchy and the converter is tiny and seems cheap. Maybe it's just this one pen, but I'm not interested in getting another one. However the Platinum wrote like a dream from the beginning. I prefer European nibs to Japanese, but it's a fun pen to have in my collection. For Japanese pens, I love Pilot! Fun review! Thanks! :)

I have small cursive handwriting and love my Sailor Pro Gear EF. I came to this video because I am considering buying a Nakaya. I am in between EF and F. I feel from what I’ve heard the EF would be narrower than a Sailor EF; I should go with a F. Wondering if you have any thoughts or experience with Nakaya nibs. Unfortunately not many KZbin videos go into detail on the performance of Nakaya nibs because they’re too focused on the aesthetics, which I understand.

I had few times that Sailor is smoother, but I had no luck with it. I ordered Sailor Pro Gear slim, and it was very rough and toothy , so I returned it to the store. Maybe I got a defective nib.

I think it’s a toss up to preference for a lot of folks. Personally I’ve found my experiences with Sailor 14k smaller nibs my favorite, across every price point. I’ve tried larger sailor nibs, like on the 1911 L and the pro gear (non slim) and I still lean on the smaller 14k hard nibs. KOP not my preference either sadly.

Thank you for the review. I've been wanting to try the Platinum pen but after buying a Sailor that I do not enjoy writing with and I think because it is extremely fine so it is hard to enjoy my ink choices. I'm in love with both of my Pilot 823s that I'm worried none will compare. I love ink shading. So which would any of you try first? Should I get a medium Sailor or medium Platinum at the pen show in September?
@Inazarab
@Inazarab 2 жыл бұрын
Sailors tend to be a bit wetter so probably the better choice if your after good shading. I don't have any mediums but I have a broad in both and I prefer the Sailor, though both are great choices.

My personal ranking for the Big Three is Pilot, Sailor, Platinum in general for the writing experience. Sailor pens could stand to be a tad longer uncapped, but that's nitpicking. I'm firmly in the Japanese EF to MF camp for my daily writing needs. When it comes to the 3776 I'm happier with M and B nibs. I'm still sitting on the fence about my SF nib which not only was extremely dry right out of the box, but also felt like it had a burr on one tine, so I'm thinking about dedicating another month of pen minimalism to it in the hopes that I can work it out. I'm not willing to give up on this pen (just yet), because I've written with a tester pen, and it was a lot smoother. I like the softness of the nib, and there's a place for this pen for sure. But I'll still take a Pilot SF nib over a Platinum one any day.

have you considered comparing a Platinum President to a Sailor King of Pen? I like my medium in the latter just a bit better than a broad in the former. I wish both had a piston filler option and that the President was not discontinued. As always, enjoy your videos and all the work you do for us in the pen world!

If you like EF nibs go for the Sailor, it's line is thinner than the Platinum or Pilot ones. But Platinum has also an Ultra Extra Fine which is as thin as the Sailor Extra Fine.

Danger Will Robinson... Cat hair on Platinum.... Cat hair on Platinum... LOL. I recently purchased my first Sailor 1911 Pro Gear with an M (not HM) nib and I love everything about the pen from its flat ends to the crisp but wet line the pen lays down. I'm a lefty and even though I am an underwriter I still feel that most nibs are tuned for righties but the Sailor just works so well for me right out of the box with no additional tuning needed on my part. Thanks for sharing.

Oh. . Which ones are you talking about? I’m researching for my next buy and quite enjoy bouncy gold nibs as opposed to stiff ones. I feel like that is why I pay for the gold nib. That said I have a lovely Lamy 2000 in fine which has a lovely bounce and a Sailor pGS in MF which also, surprisingly has a bounce (at least for me!)
