One of the most striking metaphors in Plato’s Phaedo is the body being of like a prison. Most likely the most stark expression of Platonic dualism and against the body in anywhere you will find in Plato’s dialogues. Socrates is also behind bars at this time. Symbology: Socrates’ chains are ONLY released so he can die. - The body ends up filtering out what the soul can perceive-the soul is stuck with the body - The body contaminates the soul - Though, the soul directs the body Socrates says how the soul should be more concerned of the unseen world (Hades), than the materialistic world. Unseen: Realities that can only be perceived by the mind and soul-not the body. Breaking the connection with the body and contemplating the divine-there can be pleasures and pains with this-but not that of the body: thirst, hunger, sexual desire, desire for honor or domination. The role of philosophy has to show the soul that the soul is actually collaborating with the body in its own imprisonment. The soul feels desire and desires through the body into the visible world, and it occupies itself with that. Socrates: Philosophy can see the imprisonment is affected by the prisoner’s own active desires. The desire makes the soul an accessory to its own confinement.

one of the strongest expressions of Platonic dualism in his texts. . .

thank you. Even when Plato has his reincarnation myths, he cannot favour the Christian account of the resurrection of the flesh. It is arguable he would favour the singularity of nous.
@GregoryBSadler10 жыл бұрын
Mark Trumble Yes, Plato would certainly not be receptive to the notion of the resurrection of the body. Plenty of Jewish and Christian platonists would, though. . .

Gregory B. Sadler Just a question , How exactly is the soul collaborating with the body ???? And why is it collaborating with the body in the first place ???
@GregoryBSadler9 жыл бұрын
In this dialogue - and the answer to your question is given in detail there, if you read it - the soul collaborates by treating things of the body as being as important as the body takes them to be
@bjsanantonio73509 жыл бұрын
Another question , If the soul exists before birth and it somewhat originated from the world of forms why would it then go to the world of senses ???

Gregory do you personally have any 'sense' of the 'Hades'/Unseen 'Real World' Meta Abstract undefined, immeasurable 'Place' Plato was talking about? Like in a 'spiritual' way? Do you have the pre-existing spiritual 'sense' innate in your soul that Plato was talking about as the awareness of the 'Real'?

I am amazed! I just posted a video about that on my channel without knowledge of Plato's thesis and we are exactly on the same page. Indeed our body is a prison for the soul. We need to dominate it, that's Christianity one on one.
@mattb67219 жыл бұрын
Cool video. How does Plato think that philosophers can go on strictly concerning themselves with the unseen world without having to seek the sustenance that bodies needs to practicing philosophy? Or is he referring to extraneous desires like luxury, greed and hedonism, and excusing basic bodily needs as negligible?
@GregoryBSadler9 жыл бұрын
Matt Breton He doesn't think - or say - that, while we have bodies, we don't have to attend to them at all.

So somehow the soul is capable to feel the desires of the body even being a immaterial specie that does not hunger or feel thirsty? This is because it has a part related to the appetite?

Look into near death experiences or out of body experiences also known as astral projection. Or if thats not enough look into individuals who incarnate with memories of past lives. If you look for material proof for an immaterial existence then your relying on ingnorance to percieve your reality and are therefor trapping your self in a narrow bandwith of what you percieve as possible
