Just finished the audiobook & it was interesting but couldn’t understand the speeches. Thanks for your short analysis, great synopsis so far. I’ll listen to your other examinations of the other speeches as well.

I have read it was common, at the time, for an older man to be ‘with’ a younger man he was mentoring from the age of about 12 until he began to have ‘hair’. That may explain some of Pausanias’ words about love after ‘hair’. This custom had to be confusing to the young men whether it was accepted or not ! I bet Pausanias was not the only one that had a hard time switching his emotions to female lovers, after their first sexual encounter was with a man they idealized as a mentor. Pausanias killed Philip 2. It’s easy to understand his inner turmoil after this early relationship , rejection and the gang rape (about which he told Phillip and he did nothing). Bless him. He seriously needed therapy 💕to deal with what he went through even if their society sanctioned it as normal
