Hello everyone, in today’s video I would like to talk about Plato’s concept of “The Noble Lie”, or what in book III of the Republic he calls an “opportune falsehood.”
Thanks for watching!

Great video Julian. It made me think about some of the managers I worked under who tried to dupe me into thinking that they didn’t have any power and that their position was ‘merely’ symbolic whilst continuing to exert their power in an incredibly dictatorial way.

Excellent video! A longer version on this with a little more explanation of the reversal of techne and mechane (spelling?) in Plato and Derrida! Much appreciated!

I wonder if this distinction can also be made with certain (contemporary) artists and the sometimes lack of interest in properly communicating the language they choose, are utilizing and operating under. Because the meaning of a piece can be so opaque due to its idiosyncracies, it's like they then give up on opening up to the crowd and thus a separation is made. Those on this side are uninitiated therefore cannot grasp finer conceptual details, those on the other side are already convinced of a piece's importance or creative flair and would decry reactions that fall into misunderstanding or ridicule. But if you are mostly appealing to the initiated, can you really pretend that producing this art carries around with it all this conceptual baggage when most people would not understand ? Love your videos and delivery, wish I had you as a philosophy professor back in uni days :)
