This was in that age of games where you had zero idea what you were doing, where to go, what the objectives were. You did your best and just gave up. Platoon on the NES almost captures the essence of the movie in that war is chaotic hell.

If nothing else, it got me to see the film, which is one of my favorite war movies.

Still playing it to this day. I have that first level burned into my memory. I can navigate without a walthrough. Same for th maze in that last level... But that tunnel system in level 2 STILL kicks my butt so hard, The reaction time needed to get through the tunnels is so unforgiving. Find the items, get to the exit, get both boxes of flares, and final the remaining bonus stuff... FOR POINTS! Still a good ten minutes if I need a test of my reflex. A lot like fighting Cleo the Colorcomancer in Battle Kid.

My Dad fought in the Vietnam War and he later bought an Atari 7800 for me and he would buy me video games for me on Atari, and video games for himself on Atari, he bought games like Choplifter, Commando and some other aircraft game. The games that I had were Karataka, Galaga, Pitfall, Desert Falcon and Donkey Kong. Then the Nintendo came out and in the year of 1990 on my birthday, my Mom and Dad bought it for me and it came with Super Mario Bros 1 and Duck Hunt of course and two controllers, and Zapper. A few days later, my Dad contacted a friend of his and he brought over a suitcase full of Nintendo games and he told me to pick 4 of them, I picked Punch-Out, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania II Simon’s Quest, and Maniac Mansion. Then my Dad had his choice to pick 4 Nintendo games and he chose this game right away “Platoon” because he had seen the movie and he loved it a lot, and boy oh boy did he love this game too, and still does lol. The other 3 games my Dad chose were, Metal Gear (which I am so grateful that he did, because I am a huge fan of the entire franchise), 1943 which is awesome and Tiger Heli. His friend actually liked how happy I was to have video games that he decided to throw in Super Mario Bros 2 for free fun and I am happy that he did, because I love the strangeness of SMB 2 and how different it was from the original. (Damn Doki Doki Panic Rip-off, but hell, was it worth and so damn memorable to all of us old school video game fans).

When we reach the ending of this game, Charlie Sheen's closing narration always comes to mind; "I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy. We fought ourselves. And the enemy was in us. The war is over for me now. But it will always be there, for the rest of my days. As I'm sure Elias will be, fighting with Barnes for what Rhah called possession of my soul. There are times sense, I felt like a child, born of those two fathers. But be that as it may, those of us who did make it have an obligation to build again, to teach to others what we know, and to find the goodness and meaning to this life."

Let me be straight on this, this game is like a difficult woman not popular by casual gamers. A Game worthy for Hardcore NES Ninja Gaiden Part One gamers and is definitely not for the fun play Mario gamers. The gameplay is a punishing one with the fact that every level is different - It starts with side scrolling Jungle then into the Pseudo 3D underground tunnels and bunker defence mission - retro 'Punisher' gameplay with scope sight and finally 'Gain Ground' game style angle for the final mission. The game is crude and truly test your patience at times. But Once you tamed this difficult wild ugly horse, you wish to ride it again just so because you broke it. When we learn the patterns of the game, it's Chuck Norris all the way. 😁 Only Hardcore gamers will know what I mean. A Toast to the game developers who made this wild horse with the limited NES tech. 🍷🍷 Now I want the developers to go wild using today's generation game software on this one. Platoon Rebooted.
