Top Gun (NES) Playthrough

A playthrough of Konami's 1987 license-based action game for the NES, Top Gun.
The first-person combat-oriented flight sim was not a genre that the NES was known for, but that's not to say that it didn't have a few gems in its library.
Top Gun was the first NES game of its type to hit it big in the United States. I'm sure it got a lot of recognition because of its license - Top Gun was as big-time as Hollywood movies get - but the game deserves its fair due as well. It wouldn't have sold nearly two million copies if it hadn't been worth playing.
You take on the role of "Lieutenant" (not Maverick, technically), a Navy fighter pilot who is training at the elite Top Gun school. When "the enemy" begins an invasion of oil fields that America depends on, you're ordered to report to a carrier in order to lead a squadron of F-14s into battle. The game is based on the film only in the loosest sense, but it provides a pretext for jumping into a fighter jet and blowing people up with missiles. That's all that matters.
The game is broken up into four different missions: the first is a training mission that's meant to get you acclimated, the second sends you flying over the enemy's naval forces, and the third has you destroying ground defenses. The final mission combines everything you dealt with in the previous missions, and tops it off with a battle against the enemy's space shuttle. Don't worry that it sounds ridiculous - just accept that it was a product of the 80s and embrace the absurdity.
The gameplay is pretty simple. The A-button fires your guns, the B-button handles missiles, and hitting Start will call in a plane to refuel your fighter and to replenish your stock of missiles mid-flight.
There's a simple radar display at the bottom of the screen that gives you a vague idea of where the enemies are, but otherwise, you're on your own. The enemy jets zoom in from every direction, and you need to either dodge them or wipe them out before they can hit you. The biggest threats are the enemy missiles: they're difficult to shoot down and they kill you instantly on contact, but you can usually avoid them by pointing your plane's nose toward the top corners of the screen.
When you call for a refuel, you'll play a mini-game to line up your plane with the refueling boom, and once you've accomplished your mission objective, you'll play a similar mini-game as you attempt to safely land on the flight deck of the carrier.
It sounds easy, but as anyone who has ever played it can tell you, Top Gun is anything but. It's a stiff test of both reflexes and memorization, and there are no continues, so every life counts. If you savor your sanity, learn the enemy formations and attack patterns. The game becomes much more manageable once you have a good feel for those.
I've always loved Top Gun for its challenge. It's a game that will make you want to throw your controller, but that sense of improvement that comes with practice will keep you coming back for more. At least, it did for me.
(And if you always wrecked your plane while trying to land, the trick to it is to match your speed and altitude to the figures it gives you at the bottom of the screen. If you're close to 288mph at 200 feet as you approach the deck, you make the landing every time.)
If you find yourself getting frustrated, here's a trick for you: as soon as the mission starts, hold down+right or down+left. As long as you're flying directly into the corner, the only way an enemy will be able to hit you is by locking on to you from behind. If they try, jerk your plane back and forth from right-to-left and you'll lose them. It's not an exciting way to play the game, but so long as you can handle the boss fights and the landing sequences, this strategy turns all four missions into a cakewalk.
The game looks really nice for a 1987 release - the sprites do a great job of clearly representing a plane's distance and heading, the framerate is high enough to give the action some sense of speed, and the planes look pretty cool as they go tearing past you. The sound is a bit weak, though. The theme song from the movie sounds good, but there's no in-game music. You'll be hearing a lot of white noise engine sounds and explosions, and not much else.
I much prefer the sequel ( • Top Gun: The Second Mi... ), but I still enjoy sitting down to play the original Top Gun on occasion. It doesn't impress now the way it did 35 years ago, but there's still a good bit of fun to be wrung from this one if you can summon the right mindset.
Now, if only they'd combined this with Kings of the Beach... just imagine having 80s beefcake beach volleyball breaks between the combat missions!

For people who never played this game, I can’t even begin to explain how hard it was to land the plane. Borderline impossible for a young child lol. As many times as I rented this game, and as many weekends as I played it, I think I landed the plane 2-3 times. Refueling wasn’t exactly a piece of cake either. Well, at least for a 6-7 year old kid anyways. As hard as it was, it never stopped me from renting and playing it. The soundtrack to this game was great too. The 80’s was so awesome.

Anyone with anything bad to say abojt this game needs to understand thia came out almost 35 years ago on an 8 bit console..... Im over here on the verge of tears from hearing the opening theme and start up sounds in the menus, thinking about how I played this as a kid at my grandparents house who are long gone.. Man this brings back memories. I remember only being able to get up to the 2nd mission no matter how hard I tried. Except for one afternoon where for some reason I was just in "the zone" lol. Finished it that day with no lives lost except for the last landing which I fudged. Never was able to finish it ever again. Good, happy, simpler days.

I come out of the woods and hills of northern Arkansas when i was 8 to go live with my dad in St. Louis, MO for the summer of 1992, We were there for a few days getting pretty bored. Dad lived in an apartment complex and the opportunities for outside play weren't really there. Guy knocks on the door, he'd seen us playing catch outside earlier with dad. Had an old NES in a box, comes back 2 more times carrying a box of controllers, and then a box of games. Gave it all to us for free. It was my first time seeing anything like it. Pinball and Pac-Man at the laundromat was the entirety of my video game knowledge up to that point. Out of that whole microwave sized box of games I ended up with 3 favorites. Jet Man, NES Open(golf), and Top Gun. The first two were two player games with my dad. Top Gun ended up my go to single player game. There was a flight stick controller in the controller box that made the game really easy to play to me. By the time we went back to mom at the end of the summer I could beat the whole thing in a single sitting without ever getting hit. For the record, I tried this on an emulator recently and could barely get through the first mission......

As for me, this was one of my favourite game as a kid. Knowing nothing about speed and altitude, landing and refueling was the hardest part of this game for me. But some how I came to realise that your speed and altitude must at least be near to the one given on the flight screen. From there, I finally completed all the stages, the graphics wasn't that good compared to today's games but during those years back then, it was awesome playing a jet fighter game... I just really missed my childhood days, this video just made me fall in tears, memories will be memories. Thank you

I must have been between 10 and 12..... it was there or there about's. In the UK, i lived in Southampton. I remember my Dad watching me play the NES, and he was impressed, so by my total surprise, he said ''shall we go and get some games?''. We drove too a place called Sholing Video, we knew the owners. I remember the smell! It was like a clean, yet had that cinema pop corn smell from the machine they had, a massive sweet counter, and on one side of the shop was all the videos, and the other was the games. I remember clear as day looking in the HUGE glass cabinet at the games. I saw Top Gun and Airwolf... and my dad saw Golf and Blades Of Steel. We asked too look at them, they got the games out and i like the looks of the two i picked and my dad really liked his two haha...... so i was over joyed when he purchased all of them. We drove home, really dark Autumn, cold weekend. We played Golf, Brilliant! back then it was so amazing...... you could play as the dude in a red top, the opponent in a white top then if you got the high score, you unlocked the guy in a blue top... and that was amazing back then (simple, i know). We played Blades Of Steel with my brothers, made a tournament up, i was Vancouver, Winnipeg, my two brothers chose teams as did my dad and we played a winner stays on. But the best memory of the day, was when i unplugged the NES from the living room TV, went too the bedroom i shared with my middle brother and played this in too the evening. I can't tell you the excitement.... the battles, changing from day too night...... The refuelling which was so hard! Then the landing! The landing was balls!!! but so rewarding when completed. Gaming is so amazing, because it gives you memories like nothing else does.

Friend of mine…Josh Dusseau in Toledo owned the all time high score of this game. He got an absolutely insane score blowing the then current top score by more than double. He photographed it and sent it in to some magazine from the time and they published it. Funny secret, the power flashed during a game and when the screen came back on, the score had glitched to the high score.

Top Gun looks surprisingly amazing for an NES game. I get the feeling the license was just kinda there; you are never confirmed to actually be Maverick from the movie, and I am positive there wasn't a scene where they had to shoot down a space shuttle.

So I see my child made this account for me... it's ridiculous. But anyways, thank you for the nostalgia. This was my dad's game. He loved it so much until he figured out how to cheat and just stay in the air. I don't remember much because I was around 3/4, but, I remembered getting excited to see the plane coming to bring him fuel. Lol. I tried playing it and always died. It's funny how when you're so young, what you see and hear is so different than what it actually is. The intro, I could only hear the drum sound and the bass. The higher parts, I couldn't hear. This game is proof that all you need is a license from a popular movie or character and a catchy song to make some quick cash. To think back in the 80's our fighter aircraft could carry up to 40 missiles and refuel mid-air and replenish missiles through the same tube as the fuel even. Sadly, we do not have this technology today. My, what you lose with time.

As a kid I don’t think I ever noticed that you’re refueling speed is approaching Mach 2! Excellent playthrough. I don’t think I ever beat Top Gun as a kid. The sequel was much easier, and to me more fun. I don’t think I ever aced landing. But I could get refueled. I remember that.

You probably also never noticed the aircraft uses boom refuelling when it should be probe and drogue.
