Nice smooth touchdown, great control with the throttle and feet. I learned how land a pitts from the front seat and it was hard to look at the runway and crab the aircraft. Sometimes my instructor landed on with stick back with the tailwheel..

I was extremely fortunate to get my tailwheel endorsement on an S-2A which gave me the confidence to own a Glasair S-II Tail Dragger. I actually feel the Glasair is both harder and easier to T/O and Land.

Magician! But what if you need to land in a 400 m rwy? How do u do it?

I did hit the thumbs up and I did subscribe. I never really thought of wheel landing as anything more than another skill. I don't do them often because the Tailwind W10 that I own and fly is incredibly easy to three-point. Still, that was a nice play by play. Bottom line is know your airplane and know your skill set. Yours far exceeds most.

I have a starduster and i just can’t quite get a wheel landing done. The tail on the ground is much heavier than the pitts. This video is good so i guess i just keep trying

The higher speed at touchdowns eat the tires much faster (which are difficult to get here) than 3 point landings and it also requires a much longer runway, which is often a factor here in Southeast Asia at regional airfields.

I fly a much slower biplane, Murphy rebel. For some reason the ones that don't fly tail draggers, seam to have the most advice on how to land them

This is so awesome! How do you wheel land a Pitts on a short runway?

Don't all planes land on their wheels?

The Pitts has a few strange reputations out there. Most of witch are unfounded. Flew the S1s and S2B for many hours and they have such great control authority at low speed and you know why god gave pilots feet and know how to use them they are very easy to fly. The key word there is 'fly' as you have to fly a pits.
@alancampbell11613 жыл бұрын
Other than to prove that you can do it, there is little reason to wheel land a Pitts apart from if you have a maintenance issue with the tail wheel, for example a weak spring allowing T/W shimmy. You are absolutely correct in that the ability to land a Pitts doesn't make the pilot some kind of legend. It simply means it's being flown as any aeroplane should be. The various Pitts models will, like most aircraft, do most of the work for you, if only you let it. If you think a Pitts is difficult then you need to re-evaluate your pilot technique for whatever you fly, because you won't be getting the best out of it.

Another option for very narrow, fairly short, hard runways, like Denham near London, is to land on 3 wheels, or even slightly tailwheel first, then to lift the tail up while stopping in order to be able to see both sides of the narrow runway ahead. Cam be done, with care....

Okay if you have a nice long hard runway, a luxury we have few of here in the UK. Not recommended on my 500m grass runway 😲

I have wheel landed almost all models of Pitts S1C, S1S, S1T, S2A, at our 500m strip, MY 17year old son too, we have video. Our strip is paved. We have some short grass strips in the area I have wheeled into as long as they are somewhat smooth . Any Pitts landing in a bumpy field is a wild ride with those stiff legs kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGGppqqDipZnm7M

I have a Skybolt with a 260 hp continental. This plane has symmetrical wings. On a cold day say 65deg F. I can land at 70 knots. The hotter the day the faster I need to come to final. If I did a wheel landing I would need a fast final and a long run way. I watched your video and it is easier said than done. I pretty much need to fly the Skybolt all the way to landing. If you come in too slow it may quit flying a bounce. A foot bounce is not pretty so I take it fast. Not sure if the two seat Pits has a simular manner. They don't float.

It's the only way l land a tail dragger. If I'm landing short I'll 3 point it with anchors. Wheelers are nothing special, its the best way. I never heard of anyone being afraid to do them.

This is obviously (very poorly) faked on pirated photoshop software. Everybody (that flies a plastic monoplane and fears the biplane beast) knows you cant do that on a Pitts. Wheel landing a Pitts is surely even more impossible than ferry-flying an S1C from Nebraska to Brazil. Perhaps if you had heel brakes on your Pitts, like a real man, then MAYBE I'd give you half of one third of the benefit of the doubt. Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
