Well this is very helpful. I have 2 of these and they are doing the exact same thing. I can see the spring you're showing sticking out from the plastic housing where it shouldn't on both units. So I'll be tearing them apart shortly to see if I can repair as well. Thanks again..

Thx for the assist. I just repaired a client's porta two... same problem, spring broke thru the plastic housing. But now playback speed is very fast. Sigh...

I apologize for the late reply, better late than never. Unfortunately I never made a video on how to take out the tape unit. However I believe only three maybe four screws. I am faithful and confident you figured it out. I appreciate you reaching out when you did, please forgive my absence I hope to see videos of your machine in working order. Best!

Hi. Would you have a pdf of the Porta Two Service Manual, or a link to where it may be downloaded? I recently purchased one to recover tracks from old projects but the internal wiring has been butchered. Porta One is downloadable but Porta Two I cannot find. Great Video.

Can you say what size belts they are to replace under the tape mechanism, just unboxed mine. the belts are baggy and the heads do not move with any of the play rec, ff,rw buttons. Thanks

So you have to remove the heads to fix this piece? Is it hard to put them back on in their proper alignment and azimuth? Can I just "eyeball it" because I don't have an oscilloscope. Thanks

Hey there, I followed your directions to the T and it fixed the issue during playback, however, when I rewind the unit I still have the autostop issue. Any ideas on a potential reason for this or how I might fix it? Thanks!

Jack Murray hi, to be honest it’s been quite a while since I last looked over my tape unit. I want to say that the problem may be the same, and what I mean by that is, the head plate that slides up to engage the idle play arm that spins the take up reel(for the play function), may not be all the way up where it needs to be.? That would be because the head base spring doesn’t have enough tension when the plastic little white cam(gear) lifts the head plate up. There may be too much play somewhere with the spring. I would imagine it works for the same way when rewinding. The head plate needs to be lifted enough for the rewind idle arm to engage the other rewind take up reel for reverse function. That’s is my guess. Double check the fix you originally made to see if it needs additional tensioning or whatnot in order to get the head plate up far enough. Otherwise I must wish you good luck in hopes to find the problem and address it accordingly. I apologize I do not have more info in this as I did not have an issue with my rewind. Please keep us posted. Do not hesitate to keep the questions coming, however I may not have all the answers. Thanks

Thank you for the quick reply! Somehow the issue seems to have repaired itself. I'm not sure if it was just an alignment issue that just sorted itself out or what. Another question I do have though is how you went about realigning and adjusting the azimuth on the heads after you replaced them back onto the repaired plate? Thank you!

Jack Murray hi Jack, till this day I never did. The play and record head azimuth was never adjusted back to zero phase because I never bought myself an oscilloscope. I was going to see if another you tube member would be of any service in that department however I have since moved on and relocated and have yet to get back into the swing of things with my electronics restoration hobby. Life, work, and timing has maxed out my drive to turn my garage into a shop. However I still have both my Tascam 246 and the Ministudio porta 2. Once I revisit the two (beast) as Mr. glasstronic would say, I’ll be sure to post a video and talk more about some of the functions like rewind and figure out the mechanics behind the functions. Thanks again!

HI you are right there are not many doing re-pair video;s because the video's put the price up of ones that need work i have a duel one i payed £50 and he was a re seller and fixer of this kind of deck he just could not fix it 10 min's i spy why i was not working hard grease killed the motors under £10 for them getting the heads for fostex R8 will be hard
