The Glove was a late 90s hand motion controller for the Nintendo 64 and original PlayStation. The Glove is often compared to Mattel's Power Glove for the NES but is it really a fair comparison? The Glove had unique features such as being able to use analog controls with games designed for digital only input, was compatible with the entire game library of both systems, had great reviews, and was advertised for 2 years. So why did it fail and did it really work, or was it another gimmick like the NES Power Glove? This is the story of The Glove.

The Glove doesn’t have a ton of history or long-term impact on the gaming industry, but it’s an interesting piece of forgotten gaming tech nonetheless. That and after the mammoth XBAND documentary I wanted to make something that could actually be watched in one sitting lol. One thing I left out of the video is that the inspiration for creating The Glove happened when one of the Ullmans got so frustrated with a game and its controller, that he threw the controller against the wall and broke it. Broke the controller, not the wall. I’m not 100% sure what I’m covering next but it’s been a while since I tackled a console so I’m leaning in that direction. I didn't mention it in the video, but you can use The PS1 version of The Glove with a PS4. There's an adapter for using PS1 controllers with the PS4 and it does indeed work with The Glove. Oh, and I think I may do the annual Absolutely Rose Street livestream this weekend. After all, DOOM IS COMING TO VIDEO GAMES!!

More seriously it's never been a real problem, like a lot of lefties I use a mouse in my right. Most controllers you can only hold them one way, so that's the way you hold them. Weird exception was the N64, I really wanted to hold the pistol grip with my left hand, which meant my thumb was in the wrong place for A and B.

I'm glad to see this episode and you touching upon the disability aspect. Having Cerebral Palsy, that was the very reason I considered purchase. At the time, both standard PS1 and N64 were barriers to entry. I never ended up experiencing those systems because it would have been a lot of money upfront to experiment. Had I seen a review like yours, I would have been so much more confident.

Another masterpiece. A new information learned. I thought that the motion type gloves ended with the Power Glove but it didn't. It shows promise but the way it's built is not suited for long game plays the way I see it. When your hands get tired like even the light weight controllers of today's consoles will become heavy. The reason it failed as you mentioned is the baddddddd taste it left players with the Power Glove. It's like fool me once, fool me twice but not the third time. Maybe some time in the future these controller types will rise again as technology moves further and become more sophisticated. For now, it will still be cloudy and most of the current games aren't build around to support motion controls. But like any other gamer I would like to have this type of controller when it is fully mastered and deliver what it is suppose to. Thanks again for this awesome video. More power. 🍻🥳😁

Thanks so much. Yeah, I remember people thinking that this was some kind of follow up to the original Power Glove when they came out. These controllers were always going to be a hard sell, especially at the initial $90 price, but once they put "glove" in the name they sealed their own fate. It's too bad since these actually work pretty well.

That for sure did not help this thing, nor did the original high price, and the risk of getting laughed at by friends on game nights make me want to buy it. I just ended up getting a cheaper Madcatz dual analog stick controller for my PS1, and it actually still works fine to this day.

I actually got the N64 reality quest glove. Found it at a thrift store taped to a ps1. 10$ for both. I almost passed on it cuz I had a ps1 and I had no clue what the glove was. Then I noticed the n64 plug dangling off it. I decided to scoop it up. Im glad I did its one of my favorite things in my collection. Honestly though it sucks to use. I get cramping in my wrist after about 5 minutes. You have to retrain your brain to the new button layout. I did spend a lot of time beating goldeneye with it just for kicks. Id say it works very well but it's uncomfortable and I dont like it.

I will tell you, even though I have been right handed since the fourth grade, Primarily, I still prefer to use my left hand to do things like open doors and hold phones for whatever reason, I think I would prefer to have this in a left-handed version. Now, my oldest little sister who is straight-up left-handed, cut her pinky off her right hand when she was quite young, so a left handed version of this would actually benefit her. By the way, thanks for the video, the fact that you willingly played Superman 64 to show us this, means you are very dedicated to what you do, and I appreciate that.

yeah same here, also unless I'm on the go for short periods with my Thinkpad, or sitting in my lazy boy on my game room PC, or Thinkpad, I can no longer use a normal mouse, and have gone to a vertical mouse for my RSI, so yeah I can see this looking fairly painful to use for long periods. However I think if a new company put some effort into a universal USB version of this controller with both HID, and X-Input control options in both right, and left handed options, with the software drivers being fully open source, then it would be a decent option for those with a disability who can't use a normal game controller for at least short burst of gaming.

My Step Brother worked for these guys, I asked him the same question about the no-left-handed gloves back in 1999, and he asked about that on my behalf, and he confirmed that it as due to coast, but they were planning on making Left-Hand versions of the glove as a made to order specialty thing. Internally they were aware of its possible use for the disabled. Still, at the time, they were afraid of advertising it for that use set would hamper sales and be considered sueable false advertising.

I still have one of these, they work great for the first 10 minutes or so, but it really starts getting awkward after a while, and it’s pretty weird with most ps1 games. Very interested in the n64 version though, I feel like the simpler 64 games would suit this controller style really well!

Thanks. I did the voiceover the whole video except for on the quotes, which I always have a different KZbinr I enjoy read to get them some exposure and to mix things up a bit.

It would be interesting if these gloves are compatible with newer consoles. For example, PS2, 3, 4, and Nintendo Wii and maybe even the Switch.

I still have the glove for PlayStation. Pretty sure I got it on clearance. Even when I was young it did a number to my wrist.

Thanks! Been growing it since 2014. I did a small trim about 2 years ago and just cut a few inches off yesterday. Still long though.

I sincerely believe that if you get could get used to something that weird, and if it had gyro motion control for aiming, you'd be able to do great on an FPS...But only for the aiming part..you could have one each hand and effectively split the controller..Control movement with a joystick on the left and the camera with a joy stick on the right..Thw gyro could be in either one..I freaking love Gyro aiming. You can go full beast mode after you get used to it.

Once again, another AMAZING episode bruv. My only complaint is that you do not release episodes as often as I would like.《I.e every damn day, or at least 4 times a week! LMAO》

Lol thanks. I'd like to release more frequently but I've got a 50-60 hour a week job and keeping these at the quality and level of production value I like takes time.

Awesome video! Had a friend with one of these and tried it back in the day but never had enough practice to ever get used to it. Interesting piece of tech, but not surprised it did poorly. Random question: is that a big Borg Cube behind the Philips CDI controller in the top right? Really looks like one but a little hard to make out.

So the “simulated analog” mode just alternates between pressing on and off the D-pad really quickly, like for example, if you tilt your wrist right 1/4 of the way, D-pad Right will strobe in an on-off-off-off pattern?

Biggest problem with these gloves is they're always worse than using a controller because if you've been gaming for years your mind is trained to use a controller style layout.

Hey... great vid. What are you running your 64 on to get it looking that decent on that flatscreen ?
@WrestlingWithGaming
@WrestlingWithGaming 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly this was a super basic and cheap setup. The N64 is running into a cheap $8 AV to HDMI converter from Amazon, then that is going into an Elegato HD with its passthrough out going into the monitor. It adds a bit of extra delay so it's not ideal.
