I started playing golf last October Due to health reasons last Friday was my first time on a full size golf course I shot a 114 but was sort of guessing how to play each hole. these tips are great and have given me some ideas on how to play my local course next time I play.

Thanks. I played my second round today and used the tips and shot a 105. Fingers crossed next time I play I can break 100 as I’m getting more familiar with the course layout now.

Hi Dusty, that isn't too bad considering the layoff and illness. I think your first job is to find a club you love for the tee shot. Doesn't matter if it's as low as a 7 iron. Just getting away from the tee box without reaching for another ball is a wonderful feeling. Perhaps vary the club depending on the width of the hole. As a beginner the only green I hit in reg was the shortest par 3 on the course. So I had to chip. If you have a facility you can do that on chipping practice will help your game far more quickly than straightening out the driver or 3 wood. Hit the fairway from the tee and learn to chip. You will drop below 100 quite quickly. It will get harder from there but in the meantime you are no longer searching in the bushes and feeling pressure from the group behind. Best of luck. I played with a guy the other week who hit driver everywhere and lost 6 balls in a round. Avoid that and you will do well.

@@TheAutisticReseller Always good to learn a course. Try to remember the putting. If I get the wrong side of a flag and my downhill putt goes steaming past then I remember that. Try to play for uphill putts. Even miss a green to get an uphill shot.

Sound sensible golf by an accomplished player. My driver usually gives me around 155 yards so I can use it for many holes. 5 wood only 125 yards. However aged 81 years old I am still playing. Your course strategy still applies for my short hitting game.

Alan that's brilliant. Played with Neville today and his 190 yard drive at age 69. He shot 84 (par 70) - 1 over handicap on a course he has never played before. It can be done. I hope I'm still going at 81. All the best.

And finally I've found this morning's video!!!! I knew that it was there but it didnt come up in my feed! Everything you say about the rangefinder, and taking the appropriate club is great, but only hitting 190 yards, it's driver, unless it ain't!!!! Now that rangefinder seems amazingly good, particularly at extreme distance (1051 yards to your car!!!). Smart golf is hitting the right club at the right time! And is all about running fast with a thunderstorm on top of you!!!! As for "Sound effects by Mother Nature"!!!!!! LOL!

There is a bit of that going on. Videos not appearing for people. I guess that's why my views have gone down and the channel has stopped growing. Don't worry you will be the star with the 190 yard drive next friday. The range finder is pretty damn good, I thought 500 yard pin lock was nigh on impossible. It wasn't. Gald to get to the half way house before the rain came and get a cold drink and sit it out. Stayed dry with 6 other people and watched it pass. Of course when I turned the camera on it stopped rumbling for a couple of minutes. I hope next friday is fine and no wind. The course is hard enough without wind. See you around 9:30 and we can walk round to the 9th and 18th before we get the cart.

@@thehairygolferyes, indeed, I'm leaving here at 06.00 so, with light traffic I should be there at 09.00! The forecast is "moderate" on the BBC and, better on Accuweather (so we'll take their forecast!!!). Reading between the lines, that'll mean sun, clouds, a light wind with stronger gusts, and the chance of a shower! That'll do!!!!

I play with a few guys and find it bemusing that they aim at the pin from everywhere, regardless of distance, like that's where the ball will go. Some good advice as always Simon. For their sakes, and their scores I wish they would watch your videos. I try to plug your channel.

Thankyou Stuart. I played today behind a 4 ball that were hitting driver everywhere and I lost count of the balls they lost. I think I could of beaten the entire 4 ball on my own with 4 holes to spare. One guy was 7 off the tee an a 7 iron par 3 then drove into the rubbish on the following hole. On the shortest par 4 they all hit driver and only 1 found the fairway. Somehow this kind of golf is 'fun'.

Good video. I've always said that I learnt to swing a golf club at Thornbury GC but learned how to navigate a golf course at Cotswold Edge. I do like courses where the club off the tee has variety, Woodlake Park on Wednesday was superb for that, I think I used everything between driver and 5i on the par 4-5... Just heard this on a states program For a 10hc to get zero strokes gained (so they don't lose or gain anything from the tee) they only have to hit the ball 200yards in the fairway. Or 211yards into the semi rough. This complete goes with what you're saying on this video.

Short courses are wonderful for testing your course management. I shall be going to a couple this month if the weather will let me. It doesn't surprise me that 200 yards off the tee is ideal. Thinking of the club I would use to do that it would certainly make finding the fairway for easier.

I learned that about 16 years ago. Thought I was hot poop then played some courses with water and lots of sand and found myself not as good as I thought. Made me think about it all winter. Cheers

I'm old, but I only get bold when I've got permssion. I recently played with a guy who hit driver everywhere and lost 6 balls. The most bizarre round of golf I have seen in a long time. It's painful not thinking about the hole in front of you.

It's the same at West Monmouthshire, the growing season is much later and winter comes sooner. Same when I go back to Manchester, greens maintainece is a good month behind what we do down here. Sometimes it's just better to live down south.

Thanks. I just set it up a little offset so the lens can see past me down the hole. Shot tracer is not accurate, if you watch on a big tv you will see that. I just try and get the end of the curve to finish in the right place. Takes nearly 2 hours for 18 holes. Tedious! Thanks

I've never used a range finder myself, but it seems to me when others use them and give me a yardage it always seems like it's farther than they say.

I always paced it out from the 150 yard markers or quite simply on my own course went by memory of which club to use. I find now with the camera slowing me down I need a quicker way and that's the range finder. But I still add to that memory of previous shots. I've got a watch too but that is just the backup after I've used the range finder. I would happily go back to pacing it out if you took those 2 things off me.

In the last couple of weeks have played with Neal and par par par par is boring golf…. Golf is boring in a kind of exciting way when you play steady isn’t it 😂

Excitement and fun comes in different packages. I find adding up my scorecard and seeing the number start with a 7 is fun. Or even 82 on a very tough track. Some people have fun hitting driver and losing balls and laughing at their mates do the same. It maybe funny but if I offered them a 79 I'll bet they would take it over the chaos of 110. Steady is just as much fun. Neal would agree.
Is it time for a rant? The new world handicap system.
