Play That Funky Music Bass Lesson

in 2016, I met Allen Wentz, the bass player for Wild Cherry, at a party MY band was playing. We got talking about this song and invited him to sit in on it. He respectfully declined. The members of Wild Cherry, which was still occasionally active at that time, made a pact to never play the song unless it was with each other. Having that one monster hit changed their lives, and out of respect for that success, they (and Allen) honored that pact. He told me, "besides, nobody I've ever heard plays it correctly" I said, "yeah, I know exactly what you're going to say. It's the C that starts the riff right?" He said, "yep, everyone plays E, but it's a C". So, I know having personally gotten it from the man who played it, that "lay down the boogie" riff begins with a C.

Dude, that riff does not start on the E at all. Listen to it closely. It starts on the C 100%

It is true in the recording you can hear the bass note ascending from the first to the second note in this riff, but the B note (5) clashes when playing along and the C note (b6) does not. Try it out and you will see C is the right note.

Sorry Man, but the bass line you play are not the same of the original one, you miss a C on the start of the riff and a B just before you come back to the main riff, you have to listen it. Your bass line is fine,but is not the original one!
