These videos are gold for anyone learning to program beats. Ethan is the Man! Thanks for the lessons. They are extremely well developed, easy to understand, and practical. You'll be programming classic beats in an hour of free video.

you're such a good educator! love your chilled vibe. also good speed, not too slow, not too fast. some other, more "professional" youtube channels are way too fast, do not make any breaks between sentences, hastily. this on the other hand feels natural to me. thanks a lot!

Everything I’ve found online refers to the back beats as 2&4. Explicitly stating it is not 1 or 3.

Basically you are correct, but you seem to have missed how he is counting: As he explains in the video he is counting in half-time to make the 16th notes easier to count. So his first '3' is the '2' in traditional counting and the next '3' is the '4' in traditional counting. I hope this helps you. Let meknowif you have more questions. 🙂 Andi
Yeah I was confused in the second video till I watched this first video and he explained the half time counting. Without that fact it is confusing. Kinda wish he stayed with the 1e+a 16 note counting.

Time unit box system! I am really into 3/4 time, Waltzes and polkas and am a big fan of Beirut, DeVotchka and if it has 3/4 time I usually gravitate toward it. How does that fit into the time unit box system?
@vecvan5 жыл бұрын
simply paint the bold painted divider after three boxes as it marks the down beat, or ignore the divider or ... think outside the box, put the check marks wherever ;)

the stroke on the 1 would be like clapping on the 1 though lol

Ethan is a great teacher and these videos are wonderful, but did he just suggest clapping on the 3 for blues and rock? Just no, dude. Also, he calls beat 3 the backbeat, but I've always heard beats 2 and 4 labeled as the backbeats (and where you clap).
@Afiplaysmusic2 жыл бұрын
@ravensmitten5107 & @obliviousdude9437 Yeah, I see his explanation. But I think it's too academic and confusing. I've played gospel in Black churches for 50+ years. We do not clap on the down beat. We clap on the upbeats, (ee and uh if we're talking about 16th notes.)
