This has ALWAYS been my weakest point in my playing! I can get my technique clean and play the right notes, but somehow it never sounded right. After taking a long break from playing, I realized that I was way too rigid mentally and could never build on any ideas or connect with anybody I’ve played with. I’ve heard for a long time that I should think of it as a language, but I didn’t understand as I struggle with basic communication. Thank you for your excellent videos. It makes me want to pick up my guitar again and tackle it from a vastly different perspective.

This is such great information, Dani! I think a lot of players who grew up in the blues/rock genres missed the boat on basics such as these. These are the types of things my piano teachers and horn teachers would talk about and drill me on, but my guitar instructors (in the 70's, at least) were teaching chords and "licks" - no real harmonic or rhythmic philosophy behind it. I hope more guitarists are learning to read music today than when I was learning. I was at least able to take some of the tools I learned on other instruments and apply them to guitar. None of my guitar teachers read music!

Last night I saw a Turkish video and the oud player held the oud and picked the same as the video you posted about Gy*** jazz picking. It was cool seeing the relationship.

I live in Germany. Often after blowing a gig someone will come over (another sax player of course) and ask, "did you study?" (Note: In Germany, to "study" means specifically to go to a university). When I respond "I study every day of my life by practicing and playing gigs", they gig a little uneasy. I've met so many players out here that have spent four years in the prestigious music schools that can't blow through changes, can't tell when a form starts over, can't play in an ensemble setting, and so many of their tones and patterns sound the same. Ugh kill me.
