If someone was given a game loss due to the side deck not being visible thats not correct. The policy states that the sude deck can be returned to the case for safekeeping and the card case has to be kept on the table in the view of both Duelist.

While that is 100% true you did leave out you actually have to tell your opponent where it is. Yes it should be common knowledge that its in the same box but some players have it in another one and that can create issues.

Okay so: ==Regarding Side Deck placement== For the Side Deck, Section IV - Tournament Play, Part E. Shuffling states "Both Duelists should count out their Side Decks in view of their opponent, to confirm how many cards are there. You are not required to keep your Side Deck on the table, it can be returned to the Card Case for safe keeping. If the Side Deck is kept in the Card Case, the Card Case must be kept on the table in view of both Duelists". Therefore, what you were doing was correct. Judge seems to have judged that too harshly and/or not have properly read the tournament policy document. == Regarding Center Markers == Section IV - Tournament Play, Subsection "Tournament Materials" does not explicitly say that other non-yugioh cards cannot be used, but it does say: - Both Duelists should agree on both the Field Center and Field Center Marker prior to the start of the match. - Field Center Markers cannot be items that could be confused for other game elements, such as Token Cards, or other Official Yugioh TCG Cards. - Unofficial Field Centers may be disallowed during livestreamed matches. Cards that cannot be used in a duel, such as the Duelist Kingdom Cards, cannot be used. Custom made tokens with alternate art work (such as the Albaz Lore tokens shown in the video) MIGHT be fine, because they are clearly marked as a token, BUT could be reasonably confused/mistaken for another game element. (e.g. Someone might mistake the Fallen of Albaz token as an actual Fallen of Albaz Monster) so it is best not to use those in higher tiers of play so that a strict judge does not call you out on it. Otherwise, you should confirm with the head judge. And of course, unofficial game tokens may not be allowed during livestreamed matches.

they have never allowed other card game pieces even in your deck boxes, let alone on the actual field, for tier 2 and higher events. hell they don't even let you have non-deck content cards in your deck box, i.e. cards opened from prizing. this rule has existed a long time and has commonly been one some would take advantage of at locals (tons of stories about this)

If my opponent doesn't have a problem with me using a Pokemon card as a field center, anyone who tells me I cannot, until the policy is updated to be otherwise, did not read that section properly and/or is abusing their power (obviously with the exception of Livestreamed matches). This likely is different in the EU, but this is the policy for NA. Obviously if I go to the EU for an event, I play by their tournament policy.

I agree with a lot of points, but there’s no denying that some judges are jumped up, power tripping nerds, who get off on the brief stint of authority. At the UK open (450 players), my friend was asked to play feature match round 3. He’s very casual, and politely declined. When he said no he was retorted with ‘well you have to’. He pushed back saying, ‘do I?’ The judge went ‘well if you don’t, I’ll issue a match loss’. Like, what? Luckily, the 8 or so players all around him, including his would be opponent, heckled the judge, who scurried away to get the head judge, who, whilst still catty about it, accepted the situation & another pair was selected. No loss was issued. What a stupid situation though. Who do these guys think they are?

If you aren't an experienced Judge it can be very nerve wracking to not have things go as you expect them, not to say judges can't be rude, some certainly are. Only Head judges can issue losses, so either way your friend was safe. All a floor judge can do is be an immediate resolve to ruling disputes(a head judge can be called for this), a distributor of warnings, and a notifier for the head judge for more severe penalties.

We can tell you when you can submit your results after the 10 minute mark, and we can inform you that you have won game 1 at the 3 minute mark, but we submit these to an online form the head judge reviews during the tournament round to confirm no-shows. As written in the tournament policy document; only a head judge can administer a match loss, exempting no-shows

The first two I can really get behind actually. Nobody talks about the subtle subconscious advantage you get by putting your opponent in an uncomfortable scenario with a lewd playmat / sleeves. And as far as deck placement goes, I personally believe it’s because people like to obscure their graveyards and do seedy stuff.

So hi I'm an rc2 judge and have been judging since 2016. Yes the deck zone placement is in the rule book however this at the regional level is at the head judges discretion. The side deck point it blatantly wrong on the judge part because in policy it can and should not be accessible during an active game they only thing you as a player need to do for your side deck is verify that you have the same number in your side deck post siding. The other licensed cards from other games is also a bit of an over reach as in policy the only thing not permitted is additional cards that could be mistaken as part of the deck. The duelist kingdom cards are officially licensed cards that have no card text and can't not be mistaken as part of the deck. This ruling is blatantly wrong. And as a judge on deck team in 2017 to give these types of warnings it was told to all of us that those cards are fine to have. To me this sounds like a reinterpreting of the policy documents and id advise the to and possibly Konami judge support to verify these at best and to report at worst

I'm pretty sure this was the same regional I'm thinking of. I've never seen anything like this happen in 15+ years of competitive events It was the worst ran event I've ever been to. Between the blatant policing of this unnecessary rule and the amount of repairs (4 in 8 rounds), it made the entire tournament a joke. Not to mention table 1 in the final round getting deck checked, both players receiving game losses because of their sleeves (no actual markings, just worn from playing 7 straight rounds beforehand), and receiving barely any time extension in comparison to the 35 minutes of time used by the judge staff. This wasn't an instance of perceived power hungry judges, this was an instance of a very new judge staff being told by a first time HJ (to my knowledge at least, if not, my fault) to enforce policy for the sake of enforcing policy with no real benefit to anyone. Just let the people play, it's not hard. There weren't any cameras, event coverage, feature matches or anything that required multiple people to have their games stopped so a judge could both inform them of where their cards needed to be and give them a warning, or worse, an actual penalty for something frivolous.

Went to a regional last month and had zelantis combo on side deck with Extra deck colored sleeves. Got a deck check and a minor penalty because they were in diff sleeves than main deck. I asked judge if i should change sleeves right away since i had spares and he said “nah, dont worry about it” 🤦‍♂️

Dang the token one caught me off guard and the side deck portions took me off guard. I never have my side deck out, mainly cause of space issues at tournaments. Had my side deck knocked before and had to puck all them up middle of a game.

A lot of these are just not really feasible unless you want to piss people off. One I dislike having to resleeve unsleeve whatever the side deck that contain extra deck cards. Especially with time being an issue, sure you have 3 minutes to side but... Having the extra deck visible at all time is unrealistic as most regionals or OTSs we don't have the space for it. Often we have some overlap of playmats even. The dirt is also really up to interpretation, I'm paranoid as all hell about it as I have a skin condition which turns me into a lizard who is shedding 24/7 365 so I can only use white sleeves or little disgusting skin flakes get inbetween and make them "marked". Some would consider it whatever, some didn't care for cigarette stained white sleeves of my opponents, some called me out for a little skin flake that got caught inside the outersleeve The marked card thing in general is one of the reasons I'm struggling with the TCG. CARDS CURL. FOILS CURL. No matter what you do they will curl. You can uncurl them with heat, desiccants or just brute force, but the fact that they curl is something unforgivable. It's not even how I store them, because no matter what they do end up like that, and you get cards like that. Once I opened multiple boxes of a set, like RC03 or PHNI and some boxes the cards came curled straight out of the box unusable in any sort of competitive play. Like you open a sealed booster pack and the cards are bending like a banana come on... If they are going to make these demands they should have to up the production quality of the cardstock. Funny how I have a few OCG cards and some junk foils I left outside my window to see what happens when exposed to the elements and it didn't curl at all. Imagine getting a playset of fuwalos for 300€ and you get 3 pringle shaped cards that they can DQ you for LMAO.

As others have pointed out. The first point of deck location and sleeves are correct but the other points have some overinterpretation. Almost all policies have a clear intent (albeit those situations which the policies would be effective may be rare), and the players should follow it. Some head judges are more lenient than others, but no staff can go against the policy document from KONAMI when running a sanctioned event, including being overly strict; the policies are different amongst events and regions as well. Always read the policies through. It never hurts you but helps you to defend yourself if you or someone you know is in that situation.

Some judges definitely go on power trips. There's one judge at my regionals with an ego as big as the empire state building. Loves being loud and authoritative because it gives him a chance to hear his own voice. If it wasnt for the head judges at these events, I wouldn't even attend. Give the wrong people power and they show you who they are. From what another comment noted, it seems you weren't doing anything wrong, and the judges need to be corrected. The token thing is an interesting rule to note though, appreciate that info.

3:12 This is the only thing where i actively ask my opponent to please put the deck in the zone it belongs to. The reason is that id like to have a view on the GY, since its such an important ressource. When people have the GY underneath the deck it block the view and it would be easier to swap some cards.

With the prevalence of face-down banished cards as a mechanic, placing the deck in a non-standard area could also cause an issue with that, especially if the person is placing the deck in a spot that usually would be close to the standard location of the banish pile. Basically people swapping the GY and deck locations is only going to cause unnecessary complications.

seen my opponent almost get a game loss for having one card in his side deck in a extra Deck sleeve. Your entire sidedeck has to be in the same sleeve color as your main deck even if you have extra deck monsters you are siding

I got a question about the dirty sleeves: Is a sleeve not allowed and counts as marked when there is dirt on either side of the sleeve or is only the backside important? The reason I am asking is that I have some ultra pro sleeves with a matte front and they get dirty easily. The back and the edges are completely fine, just the front gets dirty spots.

The side deck being visible is kind of reasonable as hiding your side deck could potentiate cheating by having more that 15 cards or something. The rest of the stuff covered seems like petty nitpicking.

A lot of these points are overreaches of power, at least in NA. I know EU is different. Deck location, tokens, and sleeves are the correct policy, but stuff like not being able to use a Pokemon card as a field center or the side deck thing is straight up an abuse of power and is wrong. Ofc this is for NA, EU does have different policies. Please read the tournament policy for the region you intend to attend events in.

Back in the days it was acceptable to use own token because Konami wasn’t producing any but i heard one got game loss he used different Yugioh token than his deck. Because that led his opponent to confusion

Yea, there was Andres torres where he was doing something like this. However the only reason he was banned for doing this is because in the deck profile he specifically stated that he intentionally used a different unrelated token to influence his opponents

To my understanding, I thought you could use other game cards or non-token cards as tokens as long as you clearly label the card as being a token to avoid confusion. Like putting a piece of paper in the sleeve, that says "TOKEN" in big print
