Dan, remember, when you get to the end of a level and you have all the coins and flowers, but you’re short on stars, that’s one thing the inventory items are great at solving! Just use a +10 Stars and you’ll 100% the level.

Here's a fun fact about the glowing-plant-cave-with-windows background of 3-6! The top of the background, which is impossible to see normally, has the cave wall transition into... a pine tree forest. Which just raises even more questions about the windows, really.

I gave this game a try because of watching this series, and the secret levels are the most frustrating part. You can really see how this game bridged the gap in how they handled collectables between SMW and NSMB - the collectables matter here more than just giving lives like the dino coins in SMW did, but they made a huge mistake with requiring such a high bar for them - getting them all in a single run, and not getting hit near the end either. NSMB fixed these issues - they still matter, but there are fewer of them, you can get them on separate runs through the level, and you even get slight hints of where in the level to look from the ordering of the coins and which you've found so far. Glad they were able to learn from the mistakes here!

You do have the items. A +10 or +20 star boost right before the goal will handle any lost stars (can't use them against bosses though). The GBA version of this game is also interesting since it adds an extra level per world that you unlock after beating the game. That means you only need to average around 90 points per level to unlock the extra level, which is still a lot but allows you to miss a coin or two.
@bryangillis1362Сағат бұрын
@SausageVB Ooh, didn't know about those items - I'll keep an eye out. And sounds like the GBA version making it an average of 90 would help a lot, as you don't get stuck finding absolutely everything in a world if one thing is stumping you

14:50 Dan didn't notice, but the switch respawns on the left there. It's entirely possible to reach it and reset everything without dying. Of course, having over 100 lives makes it largely unnecessary, but still.

0:52: Narratively, this seems kinda goofy. You're taking Baby Mario across the island, but you decide to double back and take him through some extraneous, more dangerous parts of the island. Not that people play Super Mario games for the story. 12:55: Yeah, I've seen that screen transition. I'm pretty sure it's just a background layer that's drawing on top of the sprite layer. Looks neat, but- 13:07: Wait, that's Carrie? Good work, Editor Carrie, I had no idea you were there! 3:25, 4:30, 4:40: I'm starting to suspect the game might have lied about Poochy. 6:25: Yes, Yoshi's brain and Baby Mario's brain. 12:40: There's gotta be _some_ way to gather the flowers though, right? 19:38: Monkeys might be unnecessary, but they're fun! 29:38: Hopefully you won't end up in a death-pact to analyze this one's animation.

Re: the flower at 12:40 --> you need to throw an egg downward while you jump over the gap. It's not that hard if you use the "Hasty" control scheme.
@8GigueBitsСағат бұрын
12:40 to get that flower you're actually supposed to do what Dan was trying to do, but faster (specifically without fluttering). Maybe you can get more time to do it if you press the previous switch (12:30) when the platform is moving to the right, not immediately.

That second bonus level feels like some tough Mario Maker stuff, dang. Tight timers to get past, let alone trying to get all the coins and flowers.

6:22 - "We're working together Poochy, two brains cooperating as one." Hard disagree. That's one brain total, and Yoshi has all of it. The real challenge (and the one I still haven't succeeded at despite playing this game a lot) is getting 100% in all the extra levels. Boy those are hard.
@timothymcleanСағат бұрын
I disagree. Baby Mario also has a brain, and he's been a big help in some of these levels.

Dan, you didn't have to die *quite* so many times in Extra 2. The first button respawns once you've moved a certain distance away, so you could have gone back and hit it again rather than standing on the power blocks, waiting for death

1:14 the way I see it, the GBA Secret levels (except one) are what I'd call "proper additional levels", because they have the same exploration/platforming flavor of the main levels. The SNES Extra levels (except one and a half of them) are gimmick levels, that are less organic and interesting than the main levels.

I knew the red coins had a different tinge, but I got curious how it would've looked originally on a CRT screen. From a camcorder video I found, they still look pretty noticeable

I notice that both of the Extra levels in today's episode required you to ride on something, so that your progress through the level was not in your control. I wonder if that pattern will continue.

Feel like, based on the empty pip at the end screen, you're missing the same flower each time, and it could be an early one. But I might be misjudging it.

Ngl, I am salty towards Extra 1 for using the boss level theme instead of the GOAT cave theme in a cave level! Blasphemy I say!
