Yoshi's Island has become "Look at these guys!" The Game.

Man something about seeing that little Train Yoshi just unlocked a very specific memory from when I was a kid. Nostalgia is a heck of a thing.

Here's a pointless, neat trick you can do with bubbles! First, grab a bubble with your tongue, then spit it upwards while jumping. You'll shoot up into the air! It also works in the game, too.

6:05: I know the _Terminator_ franchise was influential on 90's video games, but I didn't expect that influence to reach Yoshi's Island! 26:29: No, "let's ghost". Carrie really needs to participate in future holiday series. 44:05: I love how many whimsical ideas this game has. 1:15: I'm glad the level gives you an egg block right there, so you can experiment with Boys' Baseball without wasting all your hard-earned ovulation. 16:36: Prequel to the controversial phone game. 25:15: Curiosity killed the Baby Mario (Yoshi was fine). 33:33: Unless I'm missing some nuance, this looks pretty easy to do with sprite scaling and palette shifting. 39:04: Prickly pear

8:40 People have been mentioning how red coins always have red highlights, such that they stand out from yellow coins. While it's true that red highlights _often_ indicate red coins, it's not always accurate. Sometimes yellow coins _also_ have red highlights. You can see very clearly, going frame by frame, that all these coins in the mole-digging space look identical, red highlights and all. And yet, not all of them are actually red coins. Compare that scenario to the coins at 9:11. One of these coins (the middle one) clearly has a red highlight, and if you go frame by frame, you can even see it's spinning out of sync with the other two. Turns out it is, in fact, a red coin. But you can't always use the "red highlight = red coin" metric. I don't recall any red coins that _don't_ have red highlights, of course, so the solution is to just get everything with red highlights to make sure you never overlook a red coin. You'll just be disappointed by false positives sometimes.

I *think* that only the coins that are sprites (instead of background objects) have the red tint. All of the red coins are sprites, but also all of the regular coins that are in front of a background wall have to be sprites. Whereas single coins or blocks of coins that have the sky behind them are just level tiles that get replaced when collected.

I think the tinted coins also rotate the other direction, though that's hard to notice if you're not framing through.

It's interesting seeing how many enemies and concepts came from this game to Paper Mario 64. It almost feels like Paper Mario could be a semi-sequel to this game.

Agreed! I never played Yoshi's Island, so that's the main thing I noticed too.

I do really like the repurposing of the Nomadimice and the fifth world’s boss as friendly NPCs.

If you hold jump after bouncing on an enemy, Yoshi's flutter goes much higher, and can get you places you aren't "supposed" to go.

Yup, the spinning platforms is yet another instance of a pyramid background with per scanline scroll used to select the right size. And that lava is another example of per column offsetting of backgrounds.

You may already know this -- and feel free to disregard either way, of course -- but if you want to throw an egg upwards in quicklike fashion, you can hold up before initiating the throw to start the cursor directly above Yoshi~ Additionally, I _believe_ holding up at any point while aiming will start the cursor moving upwards as long as it's held, including holding it there if it's already reached the apex. It has been a hot minute since I last played, admittedly, but if that's _not_ how it works then I will be shaken to my core. To my very gaming core, I tells ye!

38:10 It really does look like the "secret red" coins have a tint to them. 40:14 I'm very amused by the train just going backwards instead of turning around. 44:05 What a dick move.
@timothystamm32004 күн бұрын
It's true to real life trains, if you don't have a loop track you can't turn around. Considering how much Japan loves its trains, I wonder if they didn't put in a train just turning around without assistance because it just feels wrong.

With some googling, it seems like all the apparent polygon using models in Yoshi's Island are actually just clever used of 2D sprite manipulation with the FX chip. ... But given that that's more the consensus of a handful of Google results, I wouldn't *swear* by it, but it does *appear* to be the case, based both on your vibes and that affirmation.
