This is so true. When I started crocheting that is exactly how I did it. We probably all started making dishcloths and moved up from there. You give me inspiration. You clearly think out of the box. I watch a lot of different crocheters and you can get wonderful tips and information from each one. Thank you for this video. Nothing is perfect anyway. I believe I would have stopped crocheting if I hadn't chosen to just learn from the mistakes and keep going. 🌍☮️🌲

I LOVE that you say that! I have taught so many people who start over, and over and over, because they don't feel it is perfect enough! Convincing them that they will only improve by letting go of their desire for instant perfection and actually making something, even if there are mistakes, is probably one of the greatest challenges as a teacher! (And I have been teaching since the 80s.) Keep it up!!!

Great advice. I’ve been crocheting 9 months and have made more things than I can remember/count. I am working on my 2nd Tunisian project. My dream project is a Mosaic blanket I purchased in a kit from Herrschners. I’m baffled by newbies like myself who say they can’t make garments or whatever. You creators have so much content here on KZbin that make anyone able to make anything our hearts desire. I crochet almost every day. My first goals were to just finish a project. Now I crochet with intention to make as few mistakes as possible. It’s been the most rewarding hobby.

Great video.❤ When I first started to crochet, I would look at patterns and put them aside knowing I couldn't possibly make the item. I saved a lot of those patterns that were the "untouchables." With years and years of practice, experience and the invention of the home computer to assist me watching wonderful crochet tutorials, I have mastered the untouchable patterns. Never did I dream I would be able to figure out those pattern and make such beautiful items. It didn't happen overnight. it happened over years and years of practice which included many, many errors. I'm left handed so I have to think differently (mirror image) watching most tutorials, but reading patterns makes no difference as I'm following words, not visuals. Roz, I love your tutorials and inspirational videos. Thank you so much.🤗💖Joan

I'm 70 now. My grandmother started teaching me to crochet when I was about 12. From then to my early - mid 20's, I made a scarf, a table runner, a small filet crochet kitchen curtain, and a few baby blankets. I never really cared much about the technical quality of it. Then I got married, had four children, and a very demanding career. Then retired - whew! Now I really have time to explore and experiment. I still want my work product to be useful and/or wearable so I am more accepting of small errors. I'm making various things looking for my niche ... I don't think it will be hats ... maybe baby clothes, women's garments, or art pieces/wall hangings/bed spreads. There are so many things ... ! That's the exploration. Thank you, Roz, for the encouragement, and for the examples. I'm so glad you are there.

❤ Thank you for the positivity and motivation! My Mom is a knitter and crocheter for many years. When I complained about the many mistakes I made (and make) as a relative beginner at crocheting, she always said: "Mistakes show it's handmade, Sweetheart" Perfection is an Illusion anyway😊. Idk if I have a huge dream project. I started with scarfs and horrible self designed fingerless gloves, then simple blankets. Then I tried a Star blanket, a mandala blanket, practised stitches and reading patterns. Next thing I will do is a project I always feared in a way, bc mistakes will show more easy and the yarn is finer than my usual. But I also wanna use the final product which I cannot think of the name in English 😅. Edit: a shawl for my shoulders.

I would love to share how to make this. I don’t know what is allowed as far as teaching patterns from books on KZbin. I don’t want to mess with copyright. When I have in the past, I’ve asked permission from the designer. But I’ve contemplated doing a private group - something like Patreon where we do something like that to “study” a written pattern along with a visual tutorial. 🤔

Thank you! I like the idea of combining quantity, passion and aligning with the types of projects we're interested in. Looking back realized that I also started with less expensive yarns when I began making larger pieces, so I wouldn't feel so bad if they didn't come out perfect. As my skills improved the pieces were still good, even if they weren't as luxurious. Now I know my skills are up to using more expensive yarns.

Love this message, thanks, Laura. That’s something I’d love to do a video about some time. I’m glad you are enjoying the more expensive yarns now. I was like you - starting with cheaper quality yarns but now I would tell my old self to ditch that idea and get the nicer ones. 😂 but to be fair I was going TOO cheap- to the point the colors were ugly and it felt horrible on my fingers. There are lovely yarns out there that don’t break the bank. 🧶 💕

That’s wonderful ! My time is divided by different interests too but what I’ve found is somehow they all connect and help each other. Embrace it! I’m sure pattern making will eventually come with that too. Haha I’m dreaming big with you, I can see it! I’m excited for you 😀🧶👏🏻👏🏻❤️

Hi Roz, Thank you for sharing…this is so true! But, I’m not sure what niche of crochet I want - I want to do everything lol! As I have so much going on in my life/ family helping care for my nana, when I do get time to sit and work I don’t have time to do the little things, I have to be doing something meaningful and it’s mostly always going to be gifted to a family member. Plus all my projects are always me learning new stitches otherwise, I’d be bored if it’s the same stitch all the time and sometimes this causes problems as is currently the case the pattern has taken me a long time to grasp - I guess it’s due to me not having worked on it for over a year, the lack of consistency and definitely the difficulty of the pattern. Anyway, I appreciate these lessons. Take care and stay safe and well. God’s blessings 🙏🏽💗🧶😻🐶🦋

Oooh, lovely . The smaller project in the same niche really helps but also, Maureen , I’ve done what you are doing too… just diving in and going for it. I learned knitting that way. I didn’t want to practice with basics like scarves, I wanted to make toys by little cotton rabbits. So I bought a pattern and told myself I’d learn with that complex pattern even if it took a year. 😅 It took 3 months to make that bunny but the second one only took 3 weeks. That approach isn’t for everyone, but I wasn’t getting anywhere by telling myself to practice knitting first lol. Enjoy the process with your pattern but, yes, if it’s stressing you out at all , a smaller mosaic might be a great option. 💕💕💕

I want to do this, but I expect to be good at it right off, but my chains are either too tight or fall apart. I have dyslexia and Dysgraphia so patterns are impossible to read. Is there a free SIMPLE video for a slow but excited student. That unreasonable feeling of failure if it takes me a while to figure it out. Also, is it easier to start with a less chunky yard and a smaller hook or does it matter? Thanks so much, Jacque
@PlayHookywithMe
@PlayHookywithMe Жыл бұрын
There are many free beginner videos on KZbin , I’m sure you can find one that suits you. The chains are going to take you some time because you’re still figuring out your tension (how you hold the hook and yarn and use together) Many teachers recommend starting with a thicker yarn and bigger hook to learn in the beginning. What size hook are you practicing with ? What kind of projects are you wanting to make?
