Canadians React To Hurling

Watch Canadians react to the fastest field sport in the world - Hurling!
Since hurling is such an incredibly unique sport, I figured the best way to get Canadians excited about hurling is to simply show them a game.
Most of them compared hurling to North American sports they’re familiar with and there is some truth to that. Hurling combines the skills and intensity of many mainstream North American sports. And it was evident in their reactions like: "It's like if you played baseball while running around with hockey sticks that look sharp."
This video really reinforces that there’s a great potential for hurling beyond Irish shores and once North Americans discover hurling, that they love it.

I'm not sure if I'd like hurling to be an international sport. Kind of takes away from it being Irish in a way; like how no one gives a shit that rugby is English in origin. Still, it'd be better than it dying out.

It already is an international sport, New York and London even have a team that could compete in our All Ireland Championship if they qualified. X3r_Cobraz Its big but only in about a quarter of ireland and playing numbers are falling unfortunately.Kilkenny have won 11 all irelands since 2000 this has lead to the championship being boring and crowds are declining.Cork who were traditionally good have fallen by the wayside and they are the biggest hurling county in terms of population.Soccer and rugby are taking over all over ireland and hurlings sister sport is also in difficulty Gaelic football,both sports are rural and rural population is in decline and gaelic is dominated by dublin being our biggest city and they won 3 all irelands in 4 years and their clubs are doing well with country lads moving to dublin to work.

Yes lacrosse is old,but because gaelic(irish) has the oldest vernacular literature apart from latin and greek we have a better idea of how old it is.Brehon laws are the oldest code of laws in europe and go back at least 2000yrs.The brehon laws had a fixed compensation amount made payable to relatives of players killed in the game and compensation to the player if he was only injured.They also had a law governing the metal band on the stick only nobles could have a bronze metal band.The native americans aside from the mayans had no written literature and did not write down there laws so we can only guess how old lacrosse is.The irish were an illiterate people for a long time before christianity came to ireland as well however we are a literate people for at least 1500 years and can definitively said that hurling is at least that old

Rory Mellis No shinty is based on an old version of hurling played in the north of ireland and scotland whereas the modern game of hurling is based on leinster hurling.The northern form was played mostly on the ground with a wooden ball and the southern form was with a hair ball played on the ground as well ,but also in the air and allowed the use of the hands.

It's derived from the historic game common to both peoples. Shinny was a version of Shinty played on the ice by Scottish immigrants in Canada, which led to Ice Hockey. Shinty seems more similar to Ice Hockey than Hurling but I suspect both had their own influences.

Its the ethos of the GAA that sports should be played for the love of the game and for the pride of your local community.Hardly any one gets paid they are 2300 GAA clubs all run by unpaid volunteers.The GAA also has gaelic football which is more popular they don't get paid either.Now managers are beginning to get paid and the higher up officials.One of teams featured kilkenny only won 5 games to win the championship the week after they all played against eachother inthere counties league and thats how the games work you play for your club where your born and if good enough play for the county where your born.You can play for a different county if you move club to a different county and after awhile become elligible for the county team or you have a parent from that county. The second reason is that ireland is a small market pro sport does not really work here.Soccer is semipro at best,because the english league is more popular rugby is pro ,but thats because rugby is an international sport and we have 4 teams playing in a wider european league,that option is not available for GAA its completely unknown outside ireland The Stadium they are playing in holds 82000 if they had to pay the players it would be half that.

It's never too late to start hurling! I'm 29 and played in my first tournament this year (admittedly at the lowest level possible, but you have to start somewhere!). It's truly a special game like no other.

In Ireland counties would be known for hurling or football, Munster would be more hurling, Ulster would be more football as would Connacht and Leinster more football, although Dublin are dangerous in football and hurling.....And the Cats are are from Leinster and are top notch hurlers... I love how everyone thinks its a mix of different games not realizing its one of the oldest sports known to man, people where playing hurling in Ireland over 3,000 years ago.There is a really old storyabout a famous hero in irish history called Setanta,He killed the wolf hound with a sliotar and a hurley and became known as Cúchulainn which translates into the hound of Culan this story is thousands of years old. the hurl was a training tool for war.

As an Irishman living in Canada, it is great to see the reactions of Canadians watching my national sport.This is why I love Canada.Canadians are open to watching.learning and experiencing everything while staying true to their own traditions without fear of forgetting their own.Also, may I mention that the great game of Hockey is a descendant of our game of Hurling.I haven't researched it a lot, but I do know that Irish immigrants tried to play hurling on a frozen lake (the only flat surface they could find in winter),the round ball made from a pigs bladder was not practical, so they used a frozen goat patty which eventually became a puck,which in the native Irish language is "poc" a male goat.

Unlike most games of sport, watching the game itself in real-time is even better than the highlights shown here. The game is so fast and skillful that the excitement never stops. I would recommend watching a match like the 2014 All Ireland Hurling final where two of the top teams played each other.

To anyone outside Ireland who's interested, hurling semi-final on Sunday 5th August (Clare v Galway), and final on Sunday 19th. The All-Ireland Final will be between the winner of Sunday's (replay) match, and Limerick. Find an Irish bar near you (with real Irish people, I mean), and they'll either be showing the matches themselves or will be able to give you information. Or do an Internet search for "GAA hurling" plus your location. Most big cities around the world with Irish communities, especially in the English-speaking world, have GAA clubs where you'll be welcome to watch.

Ice hockey came from Hurling. Irish imigrants played it on ice,the puc is actually named after the Irish for striking the ball. It was mostly ground hurling which was played by ulster men who imigrated to Canada. The old Hurley looks very similar to the the hockey stick. The game of hurling centuries old.

Great warrior Setanta was invited to Lord Culainn's place but they had forgotten about him. The great Irish hound was released as Setanta approached and ran towards him, its huge fangs bared. Setanta had his hurl with him and with a mighty swing, smashed his sliotar (ball) into the beasts mouth, killing it instantly. Setanta was upset at having to do this and begged Chulainn to allow him to guard the place u too a replacment hound be found. Henceforth he became known as Cuchulainn ( the hound of Chulainn)

Hockey came from hurling. Irish people played hurling on the frozen Canadian lakes. Presumably because everywhere was covered in snow. They couldn't lift the ball onto their hurleys off the ice so the puck ( spelling open to correction) came into being.

Hurling is 3000 years old and its said that all field games involving a stick and ball abd ice hockey 🏑 are derived from hurling and when I hear prople on these videos say it's like lacrosse or base ball ⚾ or hockey 🏑 or ice hockey 🏑 I believe it even more its also said when irish people went to Newfoundland they brought their hurling sticks and balks abd obviously they didn't know its was ice bound so they played their hurling on the ice and in those times the hurling stick looked more like an ice hockey stick today hope this help your understanding of our ancient Irish game

Most Irish people are born with a hurl in their hands. Even just hitting the ball for new people is a challenge.
