Each County in Ireland has their own colours so you can identify straight away who is playing who in the match (game). This extends to the usual flags, hats, sports shirts for the fans.

The sliotar (pron Slit-er), is roughly the same consistency as a baseball, although sightly lighter. The biggest difference that you'd notice between a baseball and sliotar is that in a sliotar, the stitching is on the outside whereas it's on the inside in a baseball.
@RealFansSports2 жыл бұрын

It's important to note that this is an amateur sport. All these players work full time as teachers, marketing, sales etc,etc. The whole GAA organisation in an amateur one. The sport itself is over 3000 years old and it is incredibly popular here. You really need to watch an All Ireland Final to appreciate the incredible skill of those players. Look up Clare v Cork Final 2013 (Not the replay!)
@RealFansSports Жыл бұрын
Ok we can definitely give that a look. And yeah I didn’t think about the fact that they work other jobs. Makes the game more about passion for the sport than just money

Spin-off of baseball? No, not at all.If you see aspects of baseball, soccer or field hockey in hurling then that is because hurling predates those sports by millenia. Hurling has origins in the ancient Ireland of around 3,000 years ago, with reports of it in ancient Celtic myths as a less-lethal form of military combat training for young Irish warriors. Not only is hurling probably the oldest field sport that exists in the world, it is also known to be the fastest too.

I remember staying with a family in America for the summer it was during the 90’s it was to help children from Ireland get out of the war for a few weeks. And we played baseball a lot and the family couldn’t believe I had never played baseball before that. I was better than there two kids so I joined the summer league team they played in it was a great experience as a kid. Hurling made it easy for me to hit the ball and catch it. I think it’s harder to catch the ball with the big glove on. There two kids hated hurling they didn’t like getting hit with the Hurley bat and how fast the ball came at them and having to catch the ball with only their hands

Good reaction lads, definitely hope to see some more hurling. To touch on a few things you mentioned/asked about....well the replay thing, used to be the game would be replayed at a later date but this has actually been changed just this year. Now games go to extra time and only an draw in All-Ireland Final goes to replay. As for the ball, well a sliotar is kind of of like a small baseball, it's a cork centre wrapped in leather

You have accounts of the sport going back millenia, with mentions of the games in some of our oldest tales and legends. The Modern game really started with with creation of the Gaelic Athletic Association during a period of Irish history known as the Gaelic revival in the later 19th century. Hurlling does have a presence in the US. the GAA has clubs around the country, and in fact precovid, the New York GAA played in the All Ireland Championship (at least in Gaelic Football they did} In the 19O4 St. Louis Olympics Gaelic Football and hurling were demostration sports actually, with some club from Chicago winning both competitions.

The video you watched butchered some of the terminology but was great to get a grasp on the basics of the sport. The sliotar is pronounced shli-ter, not slee o tar, and we just say “free” for a penalty, not a puck. The sport is only played in Ireland and is amateur (and will always be) but the athletes are definitely at a professional level. Would highly recommend watching the all ireland final 2022 between limerick and Kilkenny, it’s one of the best hurling matches in a long time. Thanks for the reaction.

Replays are usually about a week two weeks after the original game,never the same day or the next day.However replays are being phased out and games are settled by extra time or penalty shots if they game is still tied after extra time. The penalty shot rules have changed ,its the penalty taker one on one with the goal keeper and further out than before

If a game is drawn it really depends on the competition if there should be a replay or not. If it's a league game then there'll be no replay and 1 point will be awarded to both teams. If's it's a Championship game it will go to a replay, usually a week later.

As stated it's said to be 3000 years old and us officially the fastest field sport in the world. While the 3000 year old part is mainly folklore there are references to Hurling in Irish law dated in the 6th century which outline compensation for various injuries one might get while playing. It was originally designed to train young warriors for battle.

This is why it's better to listen to an actual Irish person narrate. The English pronunciation of Irish (gaelic) words is horrible. Sliotar sounds more like slitter or shlitter. ... If you're ever in Ireland over the summer, go to a game. It's very exciting to watch live. I know it's been commented already, but the first documented evidence is 3000 years. It bares remembering that Ireland had a mostly aural culture. Hardly anyone could read or write, and 3000 years is a long time for perishable things to last, so it could potentially be much older than 3000 years.
