I feel this is a great example of demonstrating the difference between knowing WHAT to do and knowing HOW to do it. I can watch a video explaining a tumbao but have I committed them to memory and fully understood them to this level yet? Don’t play until you get it right, play until you don’t get it wrong etc. a timely reminder for me! Thank you - as always - for your teaching.

Kind of sad you left out one of the most instantly recognizable Tumbaos of all time, Milton Cardona, always unique tuning, and the muff/slap on the and, made Willie Colon's sound what it was, as much as anything else. But great that you included Papo Pepin, who I consider the greatest all-around dance music conga player of all time. Example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3akXn18jK6bmZI

So these are based on tumbaos I’ve already covered… I haven’t done Milton Cardona… I’m trying to relaunch that series of cover the conga greats and their tumbaos but in much different way which is why I haven’t done one is awhile… but he’s actually one of the first ones I’m covering.

@@APercussionLife Thank you! I met him a few times on the west coast in the late 70's early 80's, and he was a really cool guy, sharing what he knew about things like Abakua, Palo, and Regla de Ocha, and was just about the coolest guy to watch play of any conguero. One time I saw him keep solid tumbao playing with willie colon, while he lit a cigarette with two hands. Never seen anything like it before or since. Also: I notice when a lot of these greats get interviewed, as in some of the interviews with Little Johnny Rivero formerly of La Sonora Ponceña, he was never asked nor did he mention the Tumbaos that made him famous to us, like on "Rumba En El Patio", where he does some signature Little Johnny type stuff, playing off of one of the greatest dance music timbaleros ever, Raymond Vega. Ray's left hand on La Sonora Ponceña albums is a thing of wonder. Jossie Colon would later adapt his style. Anyway I go on too long! Thanks again for this great channel.

That was a great demo, but your congas sound rather flat.
