This is one of the most technologically unique ultralights I've seen. That auto disable and retracting blade motor is incredible.

I wish they had trikes like these in '08 when I was learning to fly trikes in Brenda AZ. Electric motors add more safety and can be stored in a garage without gas fumes. I don't drive anymore, so when I fly now I rent fixed wing, and even that is rare since Microsoft's Flight Simulator 2020 was released that uses photo scenery and real weather to help me practice navigation and VFR flight. Trike flying I found is the closest one can feel, I suppose other than paramotoring, to being a bird, and I found handling and practicing stalls far better than fixed wing. The downside is winds, one really must respect them, and fly when the winds are about seven knots or less and in the right direction for takeoff and landing. Aloft I have flown in winds higher than 25 knots, though not by choice, just due to incoming clear air instability caused by desert heating. But closer to the ground, those winds die down, the chop dies down, and landings are stress free and effortless. I won third place in '75, in the California State Science fair near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, for a project sharing the emergence of the Rogallo wing that transformed hang gliding and out of that time, the idea of powered hang gliders started to appear. With just flat toothpicks and paper, I made flyable hang gliders smaller than a butterfly that intrigued spectators and the judges, and from the average adult could glide about fifteen feet at a 4 to 1 glide ratio just like the real thing. I was thirteen, in the 8th grade, when I did the project, which I kept secret from my dad, a physicist, who was asked to judge in my Napa school science fair. I did not want him to help me, as many fathers do in such projects, because it would have caused him conflict of interest. I came in First Place in that Science Fair which qualified me for the State Science fair. I used a book on hang gliders to help me, which I still own today, almost 50 years later. This trike looks like a break thru in trike flying and I hope it succeeds and falls under the Part 103 weights.

Hey Mike, brilliant video. Mike I fly a Dragonfly, Aeros Discus, currently with a 4 stroker. Would you use same ‘E’ kit today if rebuilding.? Could you give approx parts price to convert? 1 Hour would be adequate for most flights. I also soar quite a bit. Appreciate any guidance..

Flylight produced the E-Dragon a number of years ago. Ask Ben about it. It used a Geiger Engineering drive system, which I believe is the best way to go with a turn-key system for ultralight aviation. The Geiger system has more than a decade of development and production behind it. He also has a customer who is building and marketing a different E-Drive system for the Adam trike.

The prop is a folding prop. It is similar to a feathering prop. A non-folding prop produces drag when the engine is off. A spinning prop produces a lot of drag when the engine is off. As much drag as if it was a solid disk of the same diameter. Drag reduces the glide characteristics of the aircraft.

Beautifull!!!!!! How much flight time with your settings?
@mikedillonhaswings3 жыл бұрын
How long you can fly under continuous power depends on how you fly. Long and repeated climbs will drain the batteries quickly, as well as flying with a higher throttle setting than necessary. It comes down to knowing how to manage your flight profile for duration. I am able to maintain altitude at 55-60% throttle. If I make an initial climb to 1000 feet, run at 60% throttle in level flight, and alternate between gliding and powered flight, getting over an hour is easy.

Where can I get this foldable props?
@mikedillonhaswings2 жыл бұрын
Manufactured by HELIX. These props can only be used with electric motors. The torque oscillations of a combustion engine will destroy them.

Thanks. I'm not sure what the actual L/D is for the Discus-15T, but it was good enough I couldn't complain and faster than my old Solairus. I am now flying a Combat-12T with the ANT-E trike and even though it is a smaller wing, it thermals very well and out-performs the Discus in nearly every aspect.

How many kilometers can it go on a full charge in average conditions ?
@mikedillonhaswings2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of variables, but with no wind and an average groundspeed of 60km/h using a pair of the High-Capacity batteries, a straight-line distance of 60km under continuous power at a fixed throttle setting can be done. There is no need to run the motor continuously or use a set/fixed throttle setting. By monitoring and making adjustments to power consumption during flight, it is possible to achieve longer flight times. It is like riding a bicycle. How far can you ride peddling as fast as you can before you get tired and how far can you ride if you peddle slower and coast intermittently?
