I just finished Fallout 3 with Neutral Karma. It wasn't easy trying to create perfect balance. If I accidently was too nice I would rebalance by taking out a few people at Tenpenny Tower

Fingers and ears my man, just have a companion hold the bulk of them and only give up how many you need to keep the balance, i use this and enslaving randoms on the roads (because ears are harder to come by) to use whatever companion I feel like, I do the same thing in New Vegas to do the legion and NCR quests, I prefer Neutral Vegas ending, Ears from dead legionaires and dog tags can be pick pocketed from living NCR, you just need a disguise while you are hated to deliver them to the respective bounty guy, you might get hunted but if you put your disguise on they will slaughter the town rather than come for you.

Thats a big fault of neutral karma, you cant play a true "neutral" kinda person, you have to play some crazy person who might do charity one day and murder a bunch of orphans the next to "keep the balance" If the game had choices that rewarded neutral karma (lowers karma if positive, increases if negative, stays at 0 if already there) it might have been possibly solved

The trick to neutral karma is the Cannibal perk. No need to be dealing with slavers when you can raid their base, eat their bodies, and save your stimpacks for Deathclaws and Cazadors.

I think it’s more about your character’s actual moral character which is why reputation exists, too. If you steal something, torture someone, kill someone innocent or defenseless, your character becomes more apathetic and/or violent all the while a literal form of game coded karma tends to make obstacles manifest or deprive you of resources. If you do things like pick merciful options, give money, food, medicine, defend people, talk them out of committing self harm or atrocities, give closure and help them live on, your character gains a sort of nondescript moral code that, outside of railroaded gameplay, can be whatever you want or follow yourself as long as it actually fits the status of got character. In universe I imagine your character has a lot of empathy that develops as they reconcile conflicts. Gameplay wise it’s the opposite of negative karma where you have a higher disposition with NPC’s and you get the more niche rewards that take the place of all the red herrings the devs like to put on in.

I like playing this way actually, like Eastwood's character in a Fistful of Dollars; you play both sides (so you always come out on top lololololol) then betray one or both of the major factions at the last possible minute and go independent. You avoid hitsquads for most of the game and get to do the most quests.

Yes man is the one that does all the plans and you can actually get House to attack you first, and you can lose rep with NCR by absolutely failing certain quests enough to be KOS, and it's easy to be KOS by the Legion by being neutral in response to everything. Basically, go through lonesome road and refuse to stop the NCR nuke is an easy way to do it for the NCR House hates it if you hack one computer. Legion will attack you on sight if you are too neutral to observe the law that you must surrender your drugs and arms when Caesar summons you. So you just sit there neutrally as Yes Man tells you to do things, then you tell him that you've met everyone and promptly chose the neutral route of not fucking with them. He will get angry, but will still continue. (You can also let NCR president die because you are too neutral to interfere.)

I finished my very first playthrough of New Vegas just recently. I ended up taking the Wild Card route, but not because I had no strong feelings for any side - rather because I had VERY strong feelings playing a goody two-shoes character. Caesar's bunch are slavers, torturers and worst of all have *horrible* fashion sense, so naturally they had to go. I stuck with the NCR for a time, they seemed like relatively cool dudes - a little authoritarian, sure, but generally doing more good than harm. Had a bad first impression of the Brotherhood, but after a little, ahem, 'assisted retirement' of their old leader I started to warm up to them. And then the NCR's like 'yeeeaaah, if you wanna get our ending you have to commit genocide against the Brotherhood'. Insert meme about immeasurable disappointment and ruined day. It became clear to me then that this was the kind of game where there are no perfectly moral endings. So, if I was to end up causing suffering no matter what, I would rather it be of my own volition than hiding behind the excuse 'but I was only following orders'. Better an unrepentant villain than a hypocritical hero.

You probably already know this but if you kept the old elder in power he would've been open to an alliance with the NCR. You can get the Khans too and all you have to sacrifice is one character ie Papa Khan.

@@CesarACastillo During the Khan quest you mentioned, if you play your cards right, (do all of the Great Khan quests and become idolized with them either before or during the quest), you have the option of talking him around thanks to his council siding with you. You can also make the Legion 'diplomat' go full bigot and get him shot by the Khans. It's not as straight forward, but personally prefer going the extra mile since the Khans are one of the few factions that actually come from Fallout 1. They deserve better than being lied to by Caesar and later enslaved or killed off.

Since in every fnv run i become an immortal god among humans id say that allying with the legion is the best choice, then since im the mortal incarnation of the god of slaughter it only makes sense that i become their new leader. I could wipe their whole camp singlehandedly and make their best warrior run away just using words, i think might be a better leader than caesar and i see potential in what he built, only need to give women their rights back.

I remember when The Pitt DLC in 3 tried to be more morally ambiguous than the rest of the game. Then Todd Howard had an aneurism trying to understand the concept of neutrality, so he made one faction puppy-strangling raiders and the other faction the "good guys" (kidnapping notwithstanding).

I feel like it's actually harder to play an evil character. Unless you're just slaughtering innocents, the game just stuffs good karma down your throat because most of the decisions you make that benefit you in in long run also benefit someone else. For example, I COULD slaughter everyone at camp McCarren, but I want to do their quests for the XP. In doing so, I gained Karma. Even though I'm only helping them to benefit myself. I had to get the cannibal perk just to have a consistent source of bad karma without just walking into towns and pillaging them.

NCR could at the very least grant you the rank of Ranger. Legion makes sense that a woman would never join, but she becomes the 'one and only' exception, so the coin thing goes, but a male courier should be able to join the Legion as well.

I found that it compliments the reputation system. Are you liked by a faction because you're an evil asshole who does that faction's bidding above the needs of others, or liked by a faction in spite of not always doing what they want by being morally better than said faction. The fact that you can be an evil, high-NCR reputation or a good, high-Legion reputation expands the roleplay opportunities.
