I used cello strings for this, which are essentially flatwounds that are somewhere between bass and guitar strings in thickness. Flatwounds definitely sound much better when bowing, for anyone who's interested in trying this!

Q: Is this an actual song or is this just off the top of his head? A: The original song is "Return to the empty city that we once called home" I listened to the whole song but I didn't like ANY of the rest of the song just the one small bit that he is playing here. So I'm just gonna stick to this video since I ONLY like this part of the whole song. I'd love to hear a longer version of it but unfortunately there is no longer version of it... But this part of the song is beautiful.

It took me 10 years of learning violin before I had enough control to play something other people actually were happy to listen to 😜... I could be wrong, but I'm guessing it's a LOT easier to get a decent sound using a bow on a fretted bass or guitar than it is on a violin. I'm not belittling the skill involved here, but when you're dealing with a fretted instrument, you don't have to be as exact with either your finger placement on the string or the pressure and angle of the bow in order to get the right note, because the frets do so much of the work.

Slightly larger than a violin, it has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century, it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth above) and the cello (which is tuned an octave below).[5] The strings from low to high are typically tuned to C3, G3, D4, and A4.

The Electric bass was originally designed to replace acoustic upright basses in popular music in the 30s by Paul Tutmarc . Later put into production by Leo Fender and George Fullerton as the “P Bass “ when Fender started expanding their product range from telecasters and Strats .
@brittgardner2923

To add to the previous reply, there was an expectation in the early years of the electric bass that some upright bass players would want to continue playing in their previous style, but with electric amplification, including even the use of a bow. That being the case, some early electric basses had an extendable leg where the rear strap button is on any modern bass (center at the "butt" of the instrument) that could be used to balance them on the floor like an upright. For whatever reason, few if any players tried this, so for approximately 65 years, we have been robbed of the tones that might otherwise have been achieved by such an arrangement.

For a while in the late '70s a company made a device you could mount over your bridge and give you a button over each bass string, you could press the button and lower a spinning disk to each string, giving a bowed sound to your electric bass without having to bow -- because the flat topography of an electric bass doesn't lend itself as well to an actual bow as an upright bass does.

@@rev9737 The definition of talent is an in-born skill. Nobody is born playing the bass. The baby/2-3 year old, doesn't just grab a bass guitar/bass and start shredding. But the younger you start a kid, the better the person will be, because kids learn and adapt extremely quickly and you ingrain the skill them from a young age. Which is why instead of neglecting kids to the "education" system, which wastes 12-20 years of people's lives, they youth and produces weak, stupid useless people(that goes doubly so for STEM), parents should start sending their kids to private courses from the age of 10-12 in one engineering field, or one trade, or law or commerce, so by the time they are 16-20 they can be highly skilled and knowledgeable professional experts, instead of being 22-27 and applying for an internship/junior position to every company under the sun...

Haha I was thinking of that same thing. Like this sounds lovely and is cool to see this done on a bass guitar - but also I’m not that surprised, as someone who started playing bass with an upright in an orchestra. @@Durzo1259 on top of it being larger and having a different tuning, which some of them can also have 5 strings (not totally sure for what though) a large majority of bass players (classical playing at least not jazz) players play standing upright rather than sitting and if they do sit it has to be on a stool due to the height

@@Durzo1259 In addition, even the shape is different: round shoulders on the cello's upper bouts, but sloping shoulders (a true viol shape) on those of the upright bass (hence its alternative name of "double-bass viol").

@@Durzo1259 a big difference, the bass it WAY bigger, and is also way lower. The way you tune it, the bow hold, and the finger patterns are also different. When you play the bass you shift a lot too. It’s like comparing the cello to the viola, except obviously different in the sense they have different differences. The bass is really difficult to play too, anybody who continues with the bass always has my respect.

I do love me some Cello, but I'd love to see / hear more of this because it feels different. It's probably pretty limited in what you can do, but it's still dope.

Funny part is that the strings are tuned exactly like a double bass

it’s funny bc it sounds a lot like a cello with the bow part! I think it’s tuned for it maybe? Idk, i play cello tho and I was impressed bc of the flat fret board it must be very hard to play w/a bow!

It's always a good idea to try what isn't normally done. Yeah, it may suck, but it also may be spectacular. The biggest leaps forward in all fields come from out of the box thinking.
