Playing days Cobb cards on the "cheap" and thank you PSA

I think you can find a nice Red Portrait Cobb in an A-1.5 for a great card with lots of redeeming qualities for a good price. They have come down to earth in the past couple of years. The “playing cards” are nice in their own right. Thanks for sharing.

Only other thing I can think of for Cobb is possibly non card stuff, or team items, and definitely photos. Preachin to the choir about the nice low grade cards, excellent! I always love the eyeball test from a few feet away or over in your display case. Its like when you went out to the bar when you were younger and get a few drinks in ya, everything starts lookin good 😄

Beautiful ‘49 Spahn! I enjoy collecting 2 and 3 grade cards that has flaws that are so minute only a scrutinizing eye is going to really pick it up. Enjoyed learning about the “more affordable” Cobb cards. I haven’t dabbled much in pre-war. I’m so firmly post-war at this point. I really like the ‘57 Topps set. It has grown on me a lot from watching guys like TJMAC sharing their ‘57’s. The ‘57 Mays is a classic card for sure.

Adam at Vintage Sanctuary would call that Spahn a "2 Good 2 Be True" ... My only playing-days Ty Cobb is a 1920 W516-1 hand-cut. It's graded SGC Authentic.because the hand cutting was so bad, though it didn't affect the image. I wish I could show it here. I paid $540 after the seller and I moved off eBay and dealt privately. It might be the only playing-days Cobb I'll ever own.

I think you mentioned T201 but it’s sub $1k in a 1-2 and you get Crawford too.

Hey Aaron. It’s great to see some affordable Cobbs. That Spahn and Mays are both great examples of buy the card and not the grade. I love graded cards, but at the same time, grades aren’t everything. Low grade and high eye appeal are right in my wheelhouse. Thanks for sharing.

@Redneckclector thanks, Joe! I think my philosophy was always lower grade and higher variety, but pre-war makes that even more of a clear approach. Just snagged a card recently that was pop 19, so finding a copy is the task, not the right copy. Always appreciate you sharing.

If you don’t mind hand-cut authentic cards, you can occasionally find just the end panel of the T202 Cobb for very reasonable prices. It looks just like the T205 (without the gold border), and for a fraction of the cost. I don’t believe PSA and SGC will grade them, but I do think CGC will. I picked up a Cobb, (2) Mathewson’s, Young, and Chance this year. Just a thought - take care!

Awesome cards! I picked up a 53 Mathews on the cheap (PSA 3). It has a small wrinkle on the top front that is barely noticeable

Man that Spahn is very nice. When are they going to at least put in grader note with an eye appeal grade? Technical grade vs eye appeal grade. Grades are not equal. Perfect example. Great card. Nice 57 mays also. Thank you for sharing.
