Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen are gaming royalty, I still love them to this day! I spent many an evening retrying missions to try and have as many men and units survive the whole campaign as possible (you're right about that skill check mission in SotHR, gotta amber spear that rat ogre asap but the damage is RNG and brutal). Warhammer: Mark of Chaos made a few years later is the spiritual sequel to SotHR/Dark Omen. It feature many of the same core gameplay elements but takes place elsewhere in the timeline and features both an Empire and a Chaos campaign.

I'm probably not "technically" but grew up in rural Australia so our tech was likely 5 years behind the rest of the world. Black screen green text dos with floppy disk drive was the first computer I used!

You mention needing the manuals in the Hero Quest segment, which reminded me of the classic "Gold Box" D&D games, where large portions of the adventure were in the manuals.

I never actually finished Shadow of the Horned Rat for the reasons given here. Truthfully, I mostly remember the game for a line in the manual. When commenting on why the game was real-time the developers wrote, "Yes, we could have made the game turn-based and replicated the tabletop experience, but who would want to play that?" I have never been more infuriated by a game before or since.

I wanted Hero Quest board game so bad when I was a kid (same with Space Hulk), even though I didn't manage to get them back then, I did manage to get the modern re-prints! But never really knew about the computer game...could be interesting to try!

Dave should try out Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption if he hasn't - the graphics would definitely hit that "weirdly charming and nostalgic" spot I feel, plus it's a game that is still beloved to this day (albeit less than VTM: Bloodlines, which I of course also heartily recommend)

what you said about the dialogue in dark omen reminds me of the first Dune game. you play as Paul Atreidis and the first time you run in to the duke he sais" Im am Duke Atreideis, your father". Smooth exposition there.

If I remember right, a lot of the issues with Shadow of the Horned Rat's controls was due to it being a multiplatform game, and the PC version being a later thing for it during development as, I believe, it was, initially, intended for the Playstation. There also used to be a really fun mod for, I believe, Gauntlet Legends (might have been Dark Legacy) that changed it into a Warhammer game based off of Heroquest stuff combined with its own story from some of the other stuff. And for some real fun, Warcraft was, originally, going to be a Warhammer game followed by issues between Blizzard and Games Workshop, so they retooled what they had and created Warcraft

Yes, there is a camera rotate button on the interface, as well as a zoom in and out button. Left click to rotate left, right click to rotate right. The zoom button on the interface works the same. Left click zoom in, right click zoom out. The zoom button is right above the pause button, and the rotate button is right above zoom. left side of screen.

Ha, wow, I didn't realise I had/played all of the retro Warhammer videogames. I forgot that Heroquest made you return to the entrance. I guess even the boardgame does, but I can't imagine anyone doing that unless it's a race to escape mission. I do have to say: Firbolgs? They're D&D. You mean Fimir. 😛 I don't remember Sorosil being all that difficult, but then it was the 90s, all games were hard, and it was probably the only game I played for 6 months or so. Something looks wrong with Blood Bowl. That game was my Fortnite. I used to play it "by mail" back in the day. You could take your turn, save to a floppy disc and give the saves to your opponent at school and they would do the same. (Later, when email was more common, you could email your save file so you might get 3-4 turns in a night. Huzzah!) Your criticism of the game itself is kinda valid. I played the tabletop game a lot too, and remember having the rulebooks for that sat next to me when I played the computer game - it was not beginner/user friendly at all. Horned Rat and Dark Omen were amazing in the day, but they have aged really badly. It's like trying an old FPS or driving game before controls were standardised. I'm also sorry that this is how you found out how the videogame industry works. Yeah even today it's very common for the bulk of the staff to get fired at the end of the project - it's either that or perpetual crunch due to being a live service game.

Never mind any of that- THE BEST THING ABOUT HERO QUEST (for DOS), IS THE GARGOYLE! IT IS THE FINEST VIRTUAL ENEMY IN ALL THE REALM! COMPARED TO THIS, THIS IS RUBBISH. (Insert Warcraft 3 Lytch.) This is brilliant. (Reinsert the Gargoyle) This is garbage. (insert Archaon from total warhammer 1-3) This is a Gargoyle. (THE GARGOYLE!)

To be fair I think most people are going back to retro 40K tabletop games too. 10th has become the AAA soulless cash-grab title with a million patches for things they themselves broke (like movement...). Must be fun for GW to see so many of the top channels posting 2nd ed, 8th ed and Horus Heresy games on their channels instead of 10th because they want some flavour to their hobby.
