I decided to see what it would sound like if I played a big-band jazz piece on a North fiberglass drum kit. What do you think?

I saw the title of this in my feed and my first thought was, "I think that could work, just make it more about sticking dynamics and the style of play and it should fall into place quite nicely". So then I'm watching and it seems, to me anyway, that my first thought was at least somewhat correct, proven by you! (Then I got a good laugh, when I thought, "I'd love to see the look on a Jazz or Bigband leaders face when you show up to the gig with that kit, in it's entirety"! lol) Thanks for the upload, that's a fun little experiment.

Thanks for the great comments--I'm glad you liked it. I bet Stan Kenton would have loved North drums--they are loud!

I'm glad I watched this, because I'm on a budget and I happen to be saving up for an 8-piece Pearl Export kit with a whole bunch of Zildjian S-series cymbals, which already isn't gonna make for the most impressive sound, but I considered ditching that for an acrylic set with just a few cymbals that I think would work much better, since there's also some jazz pieces I want to play. Watching this helped make up my mind, that being I can just get the Export kit and work with what I got to make the best possible sound for both scenarios, so thank you for uploading!

What type of ride is that. It sounds sweet.

That is a 20" A. Zildjian Rock ride. I like the sound of A. Zildjians, those are pretty much all I use.

Hi Chris, I am in search of a graphic of the original North drums logo so that I can add it to the app. It seems a bit hard to get by info on the rather 'exotic' and 'rare' North Drums here... I bumped on your channel doing some research. :) Apologies for asking directly but do you happen to have a catalog (or anything else) showing the logo clearly? If so would it be possible to scan a page? Could you direct me towards a forum or other site you may know of, alternatively? Thank you kindly in advance! Happy drumming too! :D Loving the passion!

There is a North group on Facebook, you can ask there and probably get what you need. Be aware there are a couple of different groups, so try them all.

@@christhedrummerkimball Hi, Chris. Many thanks for your good advice and swift follow-up. For the sake of completeness and out of curiosity/interest, I still may connect with those groups to better inform myself about which drum kit 'series/models' North historically released over the years and complete the app with these findings. Meanwhile, I found what I needed. (For now, based on the below shared old catalog scan, I re-created the logo for integration inside the app, together with the series I could already find info about.) Thanks again. :D All the best! Bram

What is the philosophy behind having so many toms, rotos and all given they are so genre-specific, extremely hectic to carry etc.? Can it be argued that adapting drum parts on a smaller kit for the music will always be a more viable option or is it necessary for some music to always be interpreted on such huge kits? I’ve heard some of terry bozio’s work with Zappa and a lot of times he didn’t really use much of it, except when Zappa wrote a lot of it down, but that also seems it happened because they had the option of having that kind of setup available in the first place.. I’m not saying I dislike anything about huge kits.. but im genuinely curious if people take setups so seriously instead of resorting to adapting to smaller setups and interpretations??

Thanks for watching. Those are all great questions! For me, I've always loved big kits ("I love big kits and I cannot lie...:)) primarily because I love to play along with recordings in my drum studio, and having a large kit allows me to play many different styles of music on one kit. For jazz I use the higher toms. For Latin, the Octobons and Rototoms are useful, for Rock the larger toms. If I'm playing a gig, I can simply take the pieces of the kit I need for that particular genre. If I'm playing progressive Rock, I might actually need the whole kit!
