Love this sound. Is this lick from the half-whole diminished scale? I'm trying to add it to my current knowledge of how to use diminished scales on blues.

+Deon Doxie sure, it would have to be, but I don't think of it that way. When I solo I think of chord shapes and intervals in the chromatic scale, with major and minor pentatonics as my safety net. Lead lines to me are extensions of chords, if I want to capture that outside diminished sound, I just center my melodies around the flat 5th intervals, diminished arpeggios and purposely delay resolving the line. If you know the anatomy of different chord types, then you can start visualizing the shapes inside the position that your jamming in, that has helped me a great deal.

swiftlessons Thanks for the explanation. Learning jazz blues is turning my mind to soup lately.

Rob, Is flatted the same word for diminished; ie, one half step back?
@swiftlessons7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the term diminished is commonly applied to the flatting of the 3rd, 5th, and 7th notes of a given key. Those are also what you would find inside of a diminished chord.

Well, there is no way I would go to the trouble to think about, emulate, or memorize all this stuff. That would be work and that would take all the fun out of it for me. IHMO, of course. ;-)

How is this advanced if your telling us the notes for the pentatonic scales lol

Nothing wrong with outlining some prerequisites for the beginner-intermediate players who wander in. I’m all about adding context.
