I believe poker is an ideal side hustle because, if you have access to live casino games, you can choose to only play during peak times when all the recs play and it will boost your win rate.

Yep I play 200 NL online for about 100k hands a year to stay sharp, and 3/5 and 5/10 live once or twice a week to make money.

Key being close to a poker room. If you have to drive over an hour or in my case much longer… Hotel, parking fees, food etc. nope not profitable. I just play when on vacations now & only when a big promotion or tournament is at the casino I happen to be near.

@@jjjrjjjr1same for me. Closest casino is Wendover Nevada and it’s about 2 hours away. Just not worth it for me. There’s illegal home games but there’s obviously risk there and the rake is absolutely bonkers in those games

Grinding out a living in live games is NOT easy. I used to put in 50 to 60 hours a week. My win rate was okay but it gradually got harder. You gotta have great discipline and understand bankroll management.

I recon even 15 years ago, online poker wasn't a great way to make money for amateurs. I found it so much more difficult than live games. Now I kinda crave playing online but its not available here :(

If you use same amount of time and effort of studying poker on anything else, you'll probably be much more financially stable. If your priority of playing poker is just about money, you will feel miserable. The top reason for playing poker should be enthusiasm.

Depending on what you consider a side hustle I think poker is definitely a viable option if you can play live, ive been able to Avg ~1-2k a month playing once or twice a week, around 50 hours a month playing 1/2. The games are soft I think if you have the patience to play tight, straightforward, fundamentally sound ABC poker you can make a decent side income

I 100% agree. Your numbers are realistic and believable. If you play 1-2 at 10pm Friday and Saturday night 4 hour sessions you can CRUSH. Table selection! And although ppl that know the game and can play tricky might do well as a full time player, as a side hustle you can play during the night at peak donkey hours playing solid ABC poker and just snap off drunk idiots getting way out of line

@rdetombeur Exactly, you can print in these 1/2 games late night on weekends, game selection is very important though

I don't get the assumption that having a primary source of income equals a lower skill level than someone who's only source of income is poker. Time spent on poker doesn't determine skill level.

I made a couple million in business because I realized in 2012 that there was much more probability-weighted upside in business or real estate vs poker. ROI on your time, I think poker is a fairly losing endeavor in the long run for 99%. Better to invest in an engineering degree where $1 million savings over 15 years is almost guaranteed.

I win about 2/3 as much at poker as I could make writing software. I'd still rather play poker. It's been over a decade since I had a software job that wasn't a nightmare one way or another. It's not all about the money. Quality of life matters too.

Couldn’t agree more… That’s why I’m semi retired at 43. The quality of life also goes both ways because good games typically occur from 9 PM to 2 AM on Fridays & Saturdays. Very difficult with kids/family. That’s movie time😊 I still play recreationally 4-6 times per year, but really enjoyed not caring about the money. After losing 15K back off of a 20K tournament, and barely missing a nice payday on another tournament win…I’ve always looked back at the inability to gain traction in poker as a true blessing in disguise. Anyone smart enough to play poker can bust their ass for 10 years and set themselves up for the rest of their life. Truly think good poker players are some of the smartest, pragmatic and most effective people out there

Poker is good only if you can handle the mental part of it, or you treat it as a tool to improve your mental, poker teach you alot of life skills, but only if you can handle it.

Encouraging anyone to gamble as a source of income is honestly one of the worst things I’ve ever heard you say. I understand you’re trying to “reply to a question” but your answer should’ve been, point blank, “Gambling is not a way to make money. It’s what you do once you have money you don’t care about.”
