In this installment of "I can't believe that I have Scott LaFaro's actual 1825 Prescott bass that he used on Village Vanguard Sessions", I talk a little about the tribute recording that I'm making.

I start with a clip of me taking a solo on one of my originals in the studio. Don Friedman is pictured in the background playing piano, and you can hear Eliot Zigmund playing drums.
Then it's back to my basement, where I take a few minutes to thank everyone who's helped me with the project. After that, there's another video excerpt from the recording session with Don and Eliot. Then back to my basement with a little information on Scott's setup, as well as a demonstration of the playability of the instrument.
I wrap things up with a little studio video of me playing a short improvised solo bass number.
There will be more to come- I still have to post the videos of me playing along with Scott's solo on Gloria's Step, for instance.
For more information about when the recording will be available in the early spring of 2011, please refer to my website at:

Thanks!
-Phil

I just love those old Hi-Fidelity recordings. My dad had a monster tube driven HI-FI rig back in the '60s and when Uncle Joe came out from California one summer he brought a reel of what he was working on and it was Bill Evans trio et al. Uncle was a pianist, composed, transcribed etc... long story short, we duped the reel and I used to kick back and just groove away. I was playing a classical guitar, Uncle Joe drilled me on "orchestra guitar" and I would jam along. Good times.

I first went to Sam Kolstein's shop with Charlie Haden around 1972. It's when I first heard that Sam had Scott's bass. Charlie, who roomed with Scotty for a while in the early days when playing with Ornette, wanted to see the bass but it was before Sam had a chance to work on the damage caused by the accident. It was a great surprise to finally see and hear the bass after all these years. I've often thought about it.

Love the bass! I just taught myself "Spring is here" from portrait of jazz and am thinking of writing it out someday. His accompaniment is surreal and pure passion. Best wishes!

Not exactly. It's a Prescott bass made in 1825, but it was restored for Scott by Sam Kolstein, who set it up specifically for the way Scott wanted to play at that time. Look for my video entitled "Barrie Kolstein Talks About Scott LaFaro's Prescott Bass."

Would sound more like Scott if someone put some gut strings on that instrument. Bet is sounds amazing with a bow as the instrument was designed for arco playing.
