I thought this would be a special video when I read the title. Ron Carter's response hit me especially hard. It takes a lot to admit that it's tough to organise our thoughts at any time and I think he's a legend for putting his thoughts and feelings out there so honestly. Music is important, practice is important but being kind to ourselves is essential if we are to get back to playing music with and for others. Thanks DDB and the legendary Ron Carter. Stay safe.

Embarrassed that I’d never heard him before, but Brian Bromberg. Wow! What an amazing touch and sound he’s got. Checking his work out now. As always, Geoff, thanks so much.
@DiscoverDoubleBass4 жыл бұрын
Hey Chad, I'm a huge fan of Brian Bromberg and would recommend you check out his albums Wood and Wood 2. They are INCREDIBLE! Plus, you wouldn't believe how many hit records he's played on such as Michael Buble's record with Fever and Moondance. If you listen to the bass there are some seriously hip lines happening on that record!

BB is a monster. His insights were very thoughtful as well. Great stuff.

@@chadball4526 I got to know him as an electric bassist first, he is also a killer on electric. I saw him live in a fusion setting in the 90s, one of the best concerts of my life.

Chuck Israels: “Unfortunately there’re not that many reasons to play all the time.” Man, it was really reassuring to hear that sentiment from a master of the bass. Lately I’ve been feeling burned out by practicing with no prospect of playing with other people. At least I know I’m not the only one!

Dear Geoff, congratulations for putting this together and congratulations to each one of these fantastic musicians for sharing their wisdom with us. I had been making fairly good use of all this extra time but recently I have been feeling disillusioned. This was just what I needed to get back on the horse. Looking forward to more videos in this series.

Which bass is John Patitucci playing? The top looks very unusual, doesn't look like spruce at all.

It's an old Italian bass made by Gagliano. John talks about it in a future video.

Thanks for the video, it's very interesting; however, Patitucci makes me laugh with his "advice" play an ostinato for not 3 mins, not 5 mins but 10 mins. (who has that kind of time?) No offense...but, are you crazy John?
