As a veteran Terraria Player, I appreciate your honesty. When you know this game, it's some of the most fun and replayability you can get out of any game, but it really does feel like a Veteran's Club to new players. But seeing Minecraft players try this game because they think "it's just 2D Minecraft" never gets old.

I always do my first playthroughs of games completely blindly, no wiki searches, no googling stuff, no nothing. I did that too with Terraria almost 5 years ago now. I loved it. Playing a game like this blindly takes a shit load of time dont get me wrong, but the sense of exploration you get from it makes it all worth it for me in the end. The biggest issue I have with the game after over 1500 hours of playing on pc alone is the final boss, which I almost always skip. I know this game is hard and for most people a bit unfriendly to start off with, but trust me try and play this game solo before hopping in with a friend. The video was great btw before you think I forgot about that. This is just the insight of someone who's been playing since 1.1 instead of 1.4.

i agree that it is hard for new players, but terraria has this feeling that i cant explain. i bought this game and played it for like 2 hours with my friend, at the start we didnt know what to do and tortured the living hell out of the guide (i know you did to dont lie to yourself) and then we just left the game, after about a year we returned with even more friends and it was probably the best gaming experience of my life, just sitting together at vc trying to fish at the sky while harpies are trying to kill us, sitting together every day at school watching videos reading Wikipedia pages and planning our gameplay or how to get the next item, all of those things made terraria one of my favorite games, and we did that 100% blind, so i think you should definitely buy this game if its on sale, and just play it with 3 friends. its really a joy.

Some general tips for Terraria beginners: -You should probably start in a Classic world with a Classic character, Journey mode is fun but it's literally got Godmode built in as one of its many, many features to make the game substantially easier, which is a little bit OP. -The Terraria Wiki is your best friend. Seriously, it's got everything. My genuine favorite way to use it is to just aimlessly click on links and look at all of the cool items in the game, and maybe find something I think looks cool and try to get it in-game. Don't be afraid to use it! -If possible, play with friends. Terraria is so much better as a multiplayer game in my opinion, I almost never play alone. -Start with vanilla! It might be somewhat tempting to jump right into modded playthroughs, especially if you've played a lot of modded Minecraft or similar, but let me tell you... Terraria is no Minecraft. You have more than enough content to explore in the base game, it can already be very overwhelming for new players. -Pick a class. This might seem like a weird thing to say, but it's kind of important to mention. Terraria has four "classes," (Melee, Ranged, Magic, and Summoner) and most armor sets, accessories, and playstyles synergize with just one of these weapon types. This is less important in the earlier stages of the game but becomes increasingly more important the further you get into the game (especially after defeating an important progressional boss, that I will not mention by name, but should become pretty obvious which it is by what happens after it is killed). You can still choose to mostly ignore the class system, but you will likely be significantly less powerful than you "should be." Above all else, have fun! You don't have to follow any of this, none of these are hard and fast "rules." This is just how I tend to have the most fun playing, and what I feel like would be the most helpful set of basic tips for a beginner. Have a good one!

I have been playing terraria for 6 years maybe 7. You make some GREAT points, the single thing that often stops me from starting that new playthrough is the dead feel of early game. Also on expert and especially master mode, the extra slot is needed (though I think that’s a flaw) the enemies get so tough so fast that you really need it.

As someone with hundreds of hours in this game and thinks its one of the best games of all time I absoultely agree with you on most of your points the beggining is really grindy and it can be really boring but to be honest i feel like shyguymask some what "spoiled" your experience. knowing what you're doing in this game is what makes it so incredibly fun. and I am very suprised you got all this out of it in 30 hours
@exzyle

Yeah, 30hrs for a first playthrough is really short. My first playthrough of the game took me around 110hrs. That being said, I used the wiki a serious amount while playing so... But anyways I now know the game perfectly as in I literally remember every drop rate, recipe, event etc. perfectly.
@roshibomb4247
@roshibomb4247 Жыл бұрын
@@exzyle My first playthrough was around 300 hours, and that was with a second person (also new to the game), Classic mode, and copious amounts of Wiki + KZbin to get our bearings. As of today, I've clocked in over 930 hours in the game (close to 1,000 if you count modded), have every single Steam achievement (yes, including fishing quests), and still play the game with friends every now and again. Expert feels like Classic did, Master feels like... well, Master is still pain, but that's because it's Master mode. Yet I still look up drop rates, crafting recipes, class loadouts, and find out new things that I literally never knew before almost every playthrough... because Terraria is literally massive lol

It took me about 120 hours for my first normal mode. Once you understand the progression and how the mechanics work and what end game items are key it’s all the more tempting to dive in to expert or master mode. I started a master mode seed once I was just literally farming the moon lord in normal difficulty and I don’t regret it one bit. Master mode forced me to get more creative with my strategies and I absolutely love the grind and the farming of items. Some days I just spend hours making a nice little house for my npc’s. My master mode seed is my chefs kiss to everything I’ve learned in this game. Once I’m content I will dive in to mods.

I am a huge fan of terraria, with over 200 hours of playtime and a lot of experience. I do think some of the downsides were seen as upsides to me, but many of the issues you stated made sense and I agreed with. Tip: The terraria wiki is a great place to start. It's essentially the perfect handbook when you are starting out for terraria, and is how I completed my first playthrough with NO video guide help. I totally believe terraria is just the kind of game that only certain people believe is enticing, and I can see why many (including me) would think this game is tough and drawn out. I thank you for the constructive criticism, and this video is amazing for people just starting out, acknowledging the upsides and the downsides clear as day. I hope to see more of this content, incredible job. 👍

It's sad to see you didn't like terraria. It's one of my favorite games, the guide npc and like you mentioned, youtube tutorials help you with guiding you in the right path. I just feel like the balance of "Kill a boss, grind a bit for some new gear sometimes get a really rare drop, repeat" is so masterfully weaved, especially in expert mode. For my first playthrough was good, but then i didn't feel like playing it because " I already beat it" so i gave it a couple months and now i'm back and kicking! Hell, i even started hosting a server for me and my friends! To anyone that is feeling burnt out on terraria, just wait a bit and then try playing again. I respect your opinion, but for me, terraria is going on my top 3 games of ALL time. Edit: Weirdly enough, all my favorite games are all indie games. Hm.

The thing i love about this game that minecraft doesnt have is that you can get so good that you just dont take damage skill is a huge factor of terraria in the context that you can dodge every single attack

I'll be honest, knowing the game is such a huge difference. My first 5 hours i couldn't even craft a crafting table. But since i knew the basics and had the god's send good old wiki i felt much MUCH better.

as a 5 year in and out terraria veteran, there are weapons i still discover and use for the first time. This game is in my opinion, almost perfect for its oddly specific genera and it has really grown in the time i have played it

My first terraria playthrough was alone. Took tons up time looking at the wiki to figure it out and I agree with the difficulty and how it's not always fun. But when I got to the end of my playground I looked back with lots of satisfaction and realized I really liked this game. About a month later I was thinking of what game to play and decided to try expert mode. Armed with my knowledge of the game this playthrough was amazing. Looking back at the end of this playthrough I realized this game was now easily in my top three favorite games. I played run after run until I got bored, which took about 400 hours. Then I found terraria"s modding and loved that too. Now after a couple thousand hours I can consistently come back for a new and interesting run, some shorter some longer. Don't get me wrong I am definitely an extreme example of it getting better the more I play but it truly is an amazing game, with just the worst learning curve I've ever seen

I was playing terraria alone from scratch and most of time i did found out what to do, but i had feeling that not everything is for me, like i though some things like found truffle worm is not for me, but for pros or something. Now I do can do most of things and i believe its one of the best games hah

For me, the Terraria Wiki is an essential part of the game. I never do playthroughs without looking at the wiki every 10 minutes and I plan my playthroughs with it. But personally, I love that. The sense of planning your next steps with this whole encyclopedia of shit is just great and it helps sooo much in understanding the game and what to do next, especially for new players and I love it. But well, that is only my opinion :D

terraria is prob my favorite game of all time, but i got into it in around 2013/14 back when it was far simpler, i couldnt imagine going into the game blind in it's current state. but aside from it's learning curve i struggle to find like genuinely bad things about it

I have about 100 hours on the *original* version in the Steam, but nowadays i can't play vanilla singleplayer anymore because it is always the same at the start. After a few runs at the vanilla, TModLoader is the definitive way to play Terraria and i not even falking about Calamity Overrated mod, but for many QoL things like Magic Storage, Vein Miner, Stars Above, Dual Hotbar, Alchemist NPC, Fargo Mutant/Soul Mod and Recipe Browser (with Cheat Sheet if you wanna build something from the start).

ngl terraria is one of the hardest games for a new player to get into it litteraly throws you in without telling you what to do but its fun to find an item and give it to the guide and he will show you what you can craft with it and thats the best way to get into the game learning things as you go along

Personally, I enjoyed the guide-game nature of this game on my first play through. I would spend hours scrolling through the Terraria Wiki seeing cool items like “oh that’s a cool item, how do you make that?” Then I would play the game, farming enemies with the end goal item in my mind, fueling my will to grind. Because of this way of playing, my first run was over 100 hours long and I have most of the 1.3 weapons and accessories

Very fair opinion I’ve been playing since 2012 and any friends of mine who have just been starting playing recently get very lost and need lots of help. But it’s one of, if not, my favourite games of all time ^3^

I think the reason his experience was so bad was BECAUSE, he was playing with someone that knew what they were doing. Instead of finding new things randomly, slowly finding random weird sht that's cool but you have no idea what it does, exploring new places without knowing what to look for. THAT is the correct experience, but when you play with people that have been playing it, they tend to give you things without saying what it does, throwing you into a boss fight without you knowing, pushing you off a ledge into the pits of hell and the jungle. It's horrible following someone around like a baby bird without ever learning to fly by yourself. I absolutely recommend playing by yourself in classic and taking it slow for first timers.

Fun fact: on the mobile version you have an optional tutorial. Also most people go to the wiki to know what you need to craft stuff and if you don’t know about the wiki, you can go to the guide with a material and he will tell you what you can do with it.

I 100% agree with your criticism of new players being easily overwhelmed and scared off from continuing the game because of the game’s inherent design. When I was little this happened but when I got older, my brother helped me with my first play through in a long time and I became addicted to this amazing bizarre pixel game.

I still remember why I started playing terraria, I was looking for free Minecraft pocket edition on the playstore, found the game, saw like the preview images and really liked the bosses that they showed there, promptly downloaded it, it happened to be a demo only so I forgor for about a month, the saw the game again, and promptly pirated it, took me like half the school year but pretty much did everything of interest, a few years later, like 5, I got myself a ps4 and one of the first things I did was buy terraria for it so now I got to experience 1.3 and 1.4 and somehow remember most of the farms and progression of the game

i got 1.3k + hours in this game and when I started playing in 2016 I was also struggling because i didnt really know what to do so i quit the game. Then a few months later i started watching alot of terraria videos and I wanted to get back into the game and to be honest the only reason i knew what to do is because i did watch alot of playthroughs so I agree with you that starting out and knowing what to do or having motivation to play is really hard. Content updates are huge but take ages to complete which isnt really a bad or good thing as updates like 1.4 made the game feel like an entierly different game but the only reason i was playing terraria for the years in down time between updates is modded terraria.
