Next time my oboe friends and I get together for our annual cathartic bacchanalia of reed-making, Ferling etude playing, stand tests, and psychodelic drugs, I'm going to have this playing on the wall in a loop.

"Why play the oboe" Don't, you don't want to sound like a dying screeching duck the first few weeks then go on KZbin to watch other oboe players and your self esteem crumbles as you hug your oboe named Aethur while sobbing as all the other sections look at you -from the only oboist in a band fml
@morganh93596 жыл бұрын
Miss Randomness I was once in your position, now I can plau confidently without the entire band even slightly cringing. It gets better. My only advice, DO NOT PLAY HIGH AND OUT OF TUNE

welcome im guessing you've regretted your decision and have resorted to drugs as the oboe tends to do that to many people except me who has for some odd reason continued going onto his final year while continuously f*king up and embarrassing himself and the band as a whole

I'm proud to call my oboist. In this recent September, I wasn't very sure about my decision of going after oboe performance in college. But now 3 months later, I am so happy to have made that decision. I love playing the oboe. I also started playing English horn which has been one of my favorite instruments to listen to. I'm just loving the double reed instrument families.

This is from a video called "Understanding the oboe" and it's an hour long. It basically goes through the whole history of the oboe and what you need to know in order to play it. Did you know... There are fingerings on the oboe that are meant to play notes in between naturals and flats. I think they are called fourths notes or something like that and you used to have to know all the fingering to the fourths notes along with the naturals and flats in order to be a successful oboe player.
@nomorebushz Жыл бұрын
Someone who taught you that was pulling your leg. However, there are some terrible sounding chord-like tones that can be produced by using all the wrong techniques for good sound. It will be covered in a book called New Sounds For Woodwinds. Don Ellis actually had a 1/4-tone trumpet. He used it in playing jazz, and used a delay called an Echoplex, popular with guitarists in the late 60's.
@thejman3489 Жыл бұрын
@nomorebushz I learned it from the video. However it really isn't necessary. Simply by firming up or firming down on the reed I have gotten the pitch of the sound to change by almost a half step. So if I did the fingering for an A I can play an A in tune. But I could also firm down and play an Ab even though I am still using the fingering for an A. Quarter steps are obviously half of a half step. Also I have never seen a song use quarter steps.

Well I absolutely love playing the oboe, and I got a brand new one today!! I bought a Buffet Crampon Prodige BC4131 thumb plate oboe, and it's absolutely gorgeous!! I can't wait to get it out again tomorrow for another practice. The keywork feels very different to the Buffet Artist that I started on (I had it on rental for eight months), but I guess that's something to get used to as all oboes are different!! Sounds lovely though, and it certainly is wonderful to have an oboe of my very own at last!! I don't make my own reeds as I'm no good with my hands, so I buy mine online, and that works absolutely fine. Yes the oboe has its challenges, but it is a really beautiful instrument nonetheless!! 🤩
